There is something romantic about vintage fabrics and clothing: imagining the life of someone who owned a delicately hand-stitched wool skirt, or a beautiful vintage leather jacket. Where had she traveled, what had she seen, what kind of person was she? It’s a way of slowing down and connecting with the past in our modern digital world, taking comfort in the nostalgia of a time that is forever out of reach.
Sans Map believes in creating well-crafted, functional, and durable bags in an environmentally and socially responsible manner using vintage, re-purposed and eco-friendly materials. Working out of her studio in Brooklyn, NY, designer Corey Dergazarian is the heart, soul and creative force behind the brand. A traveler and dreamer, Corey is inspired by the many places she has lived and visited around the world, finding endless beauty in the complexity of cities and the simplicity of nature.
Corey is equally inspired by the act of making things by hand. By being a maker, purposefully and thoughtfully she infuses each piece with its own character. Searching far and wide, Corey collects vintage fabrics using her tactile senses, lending each Sans Map bag individual personality borrowed from its former life…whatever that may have been.
The name Sans Map is the combination of the French word ‘without’ and the English word ‘map’— fusing together the two worlds that Corey lives between and loves. Sans Map is her philosophy: living life as it comes, finding comfort in uncharted paths and embracing the unexpected.
Environmental Promise:
Sans Map promises to be mindful of the environment while making smart business choices.
New fabrics used by Sans Map are sourced from sustainable and organic fibers such as hemp, tencel, linen, and cotton. They are manufactured under Fair Trade regulations and fabric mills that are GOTS, IMO and CU certified.
Packaging is kept to a minimum and Sans Map strives to use the most environmentally friendly options. All fabric scraps generated at the studio are recycled though a fiber recycling program and larger usable pieces are donated.
The Sans Map commitment to sustainable practices extends to the studio building itself. Built in the 1880′s, it is located in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, rich in local history. Originally occupied by Budweiser Brewery and later home to Heinz 57 Varieties and metal manufacturing, the building was renovated in 2007 into a completely ‘Green’ building. The roof is covered in 4,000 sq feet of green roofing landscape encouraging the growth of native plants and grasses and solar panels power 100% of the building’s electricity. Energy efficient condensing gas boilers power the building’s low temperature radiant floor heating, and rainwater is used to run the toilets. Only eco-friendly, salvaged materials, and low VOC paints were used in the renovation of the building.
Sans Map continues the thread that links the past with a sustainably conscious future.
