As a small girl growing up in Indiana, I spent many weekends with my grandma. Going to grandma's house meant that I could do whatever I wanted and eat whatever I wanted. The strongest memory I have of my grandma is that of her setting at her sewing machine. Her sewing skills were unbelievable and she took great pride in her work. Sewing for her was not so much a creative outlet as it was a necessity. As a matter of fact, I don't ever remember her sewing anything but garments. When her sisters would create a craft project with their sewing, she would always comment about it “not really being sewing”. I have to laugh about that now. I loved spending time with my grandma and I love to sew. The sound of a sewing machine humming away comforts me like no other sound can.
My first sewing project was in third grade and it was an apron. From there, it was on to a skirt and by the time I was a teenager I sewed many of my own clothes. Life got in the way and I lost track of my desire to set at a sewing machine. After the birth of my first child, I bought a sewing machine to help me cope. I reconnected with the joy of sewing and I haven't looked back. I am a very frugal person and I can't stand to see anything go to waste. That's what attracts me to recycling damaged vintage textiles: quilts, tablecloths, chenille bedspreads, barkcloth curtains and hand embroidered pieces. I am passionate about taking those pieces and creating a usable item. It brings me such joy....
My grandma is 89 now and is pretty much home bound. She doesn't sew anymore but spends her days setting in a chair by her sewing machine. I was home recently and I told her about my little store, Back Home Again, and about the things I was creating. She looked at me and said “boy, I sure missed out on that Internet thing”. She will always have a big place in my heart and I will always be grateful for all that she has given me. Thanks grandma...
