sweetdemeter's Profile

Bio

I started making soap after learning that most commercial "soap" bars contain detergents and other synthetic ingredients. Demeter was the Greek goddess of agriculture and I named my shop after her to symbolize my commitment to using natural and organic ingredients, which I believe are better for your body and the environment!

True soap is made by mixing oils and lye (sodium hydroxide) and, interestingly, is the only cosmetic product exempt from FDA regulation (with certain rules) because of its long history of human use. I use my own unique combination of oils for their cleansing, bubbly, and moisturizing properties. (Different oils contain various fatty acids - and in different combinations - which when saponified contribute various properties to the soap.) I currently use all organic oils and botanicals in my creations and never any synthetic fragrances, colors or preservatives.

I DO know that soap cannot be certified organic, but I use the term "organic soap" loosely to mean that I use organic oils and botanicals and no synthetic fragrances, synthetic colors, synthetic preservatives, synthetic emollients, synthetic emulsifiers, etc.

I live in Tucson, AZ and love the desert, although I'm moving back to California in December to go back to school (gonna be an English major at UC Berkeley!)

My goat milk comes from a small farmer here in Tucson, a wonderful lady and fellow soapmaker! You can see her website at www.hoofsnhorns.com.
