My name is Jenny Hager, I recently graduated with a BFA with a concentration in ceramics, from Georgia Southern Univeristy in Statesboro, Georgia. I am interested in incorporating printmaking with ceramics, and continue to work on new techniques. My most recent show was the senior exit show at the Center for Art and Theater at Georgia Southern University in December 2008.
Artist Statement
To me, the very nature of ceramics is the idea of permanence. By printing or drawing certain images onto the clay surface, I am striving to make my memories permanent. I choose to depict the bird as a silhouette or simple line drawing, which can be traced back to cut out shapes or shadow drawings I was familiar with as a child. The work is inquisitive, offering the viewer time to reflect.
For me, birds signify a sense of mystery. They are omnipresent, seemingly everywhere. The type of bird used in my imagery is irrelevant; I do not want the viewer to be concerned with the exact species of bird or animal, but rather focus on the silhouette or drawing.
Surface decoration is an integral part of my creative process. When I think of a drawing, I imagine it on a three-dimensional form, rather than a flat piece of paper. Drawing or scratching into raw clay creates a dynamic crisp line quality that I find exciting. It is this freshness that compels me to create work.
It is my hope that in using these forms, they convey joy and happiness.
