SuperSugarRayRay's Profile
Bio
Rachel Riggin comes from a long line of do-it-yourself, crafty women. The hand-stitched quilts in her house and homemade Halloween costumes impressed her at an early age. Her mother’s and grandmothers’ skills with sewing, knitting, crocheting, and embroidery demonstrated that nearly anything imagined could be made with a needle and thread, scrap material and very little money.
Uninspired by the fashions of 1980’s suburbia, Rachel discovered a new world full of possibilities in thrift stores. Appreciating the distinctive styles and hand detailing in clothing from the past, she began creating her own designs. One of her first creations was a pair of unique pants made from a colorful bed sheet. Always keen to learn more about world history and foreign cultures, she began traveling in high school. She developed an understanding of the delicate balance of nature and economics, evident in her passion for environmentalism, activism and sustainability.
Rachel’s nickname SuperSugarRayRay was conjured by a Mills College poetry major and roommate. She took this name for her business and began designing clothing and accessories in earnest. She enjoys using high-quality, natural materials and is inspired when “discovering” random pieces of remnant fabric. Her keen eye for detail is found in her inventive use of appliqué, embroidery and Swarovski crystal.
