argonaut's Profile

Bio

“The scientist has plunged headlong, furiously even into collecting shells, although he has no knowledge in the field. A periwinkle, a nerite, etc. is a great treasure to him so in order to collect great quantities of shells he spends all his time on them, thus neglecting other work that he could do much better than this.”

Letter from Captain Nicolas Baudin to Governor King, December 1802

My work concentrates around ideas of beauty, science, nature, chance, growth, and decay. The urge to gather and possess, order and classify, package and present is a powerful one. From small personal collections to large natural history collections, I am interested in this urge to possess and order nature.

My work is print (screen, relief, digital) and photography based with the production of artists’ books/altered books forming an important component of my practice. The book and the act of reading is intrinsically linked to ideas of history, science, presentation and the dissemination of knowledge.

I am interested in capturing colour, texture and form and drawing the viewers attention to the beauty of everyday.
