Hey there, I'm Nora! My hands have been creating all sorts of things in the past 31 years. I jump around as far as creative outlets, but there is always something I am into. In the past I have worked in sculpting/painting for Mardi Gras World, sign painting, illustrating a book, made wire sculptures which then turned me on to smaller sterling sculpture pendants that I sold at a local contemporary art gallery... just to name a few.
My Mom taught me how to crochet many years ago. I sort of put it down for a few years, after becoming a Mom myself, decided it may be just the outlet I was looking for. I was unsatisfied with the colors of yarn available, and got into dyeing my own. That led me to list some of my creations here in my Etsy shop. When looking through other yarn listings I would come across these gorgeous handspun skeins. I knew that spinning was absolutely something I had to do. About 3 weeks after I made that decision, it was my 30th birthday and there I had in front of me, the most perfect Ashford Kiwi spinning wheel and a pound of fiber. I had no idea what to do other than watching a few youtube videos, but I went for it! It was just a few hours until I was actually producing something that resembled yarn. It took a few days for me to really get the feel for it, but I was still MADLY in love.
Things I love about spinning:
~ the art has been around for so so many years
~ using wool that will grow back year after year
~ the colors and they way they swirl and twist
~ being able to try so many different techniques
~ as hard as I try, no two skeins are the same (which is really good for my brain as I have been known for my matchy/symmetry-ness)
~ the plethora of fibers that are available to spin
~ the personalities of every single fiber, every one spins and dyes so uniquely
~ the amazing community of spinners and fiber artists I have met since I began this journey
The thing that I love the absolute most though? This is a BIG one for me...
I am creating a supply.
While that may not seem all that profound as a statement... I think it is. Each and every skein I spin has potential to become something. There are millions of patterns and millions of creative minds out there. The possibilities are endless. It all depends on who's hands my creations end up in. What they have brewing, or if they will just let the yarn inspire them. That, is so exciting to me!
I was honored to be featured for my spinning in the fantastic YARN FORWARD magazine this past May Issue 12. You can check the magazine out here http://yarnforwardmagazine.co.uk/
