If you happen to visit cookiechang.com, the first thing you'll hear is a little korean ditty called "arirang." It's cookie chang's favourite drawing song her dad taught her when she was just knee high to a cricket. And it's the first reference of many dotted throughout the site that kinda clue you in to my ethnicity.

I'm what my sisters and I endearingly call a "halfsy," or as our Hawaiian friends would say, "hapa." My dad's Korean, and mom's roots were cultivated in Ireland and Scotland.

I did the adolescence thing in a small farming community on the outskirts of Hillsboro, Oregon, USA - about 10 miles west of Portland proper. The area's pretty gross now -- full of town houses and urban sprawl -- a far cry from the days when the only place to buy a grape Nehi was tunneling through the wheat field to the rickety old pop machine at Rich and Sons Nursery.

Back then (young whipper snappers), there were only 5 channels on tv... so the best thing running was what was bouncing around in my little noggin. And I made good use of it -- flying 1969 Oldsmobile spaceships, riding my flying bicycle, playing with invisible fiddle fern dwellers . . . .

Now I'm living in the United Kingdom with my partner and loving every little nook and cranny I discover.

This is where cookie chang was born. She jumped out of my left ear and on to my pillow one night when I was flopping around worrying about finding gainful employment 5,000 miles from the nearest Sitka Spruce.

cookie and her crumz are an amalgamation of my 20 years as a graphic designer, illustrator, newspaper publisher and painter. They're my favourite parts. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
