My goal as a documentary photographer is;
To educate and agitate, To initiate dialogue,
To visually document the costs of war,
To reject the supposition that we as individuals are powerless to effect change,
To inspire the viewer to engage in quantifiable action to advance peace in the U.S. and the world,
and to submit that human life is sacred and that killing in any form is uncivilized.

The Rábia Balkhi Hospital Project
Imagine being nine months pregnant and taken to a hospital. The doctor tells you they must do an emergency caesarean section. They must begin immediately, yet they have no sutures nor needles available to finish the operation. They start anyway. Your baby is born but she is not breathing. The hospital has no emergency equipment nor trained staff to deal with her.
The Rábia Balkhi Hospital Project was started in June, 2003 after I watched a documentary about the hospital. My name is Jane Sinense, I live in Mountain View, California.

AINA Photojournalism Institute is the first Afghan photo agency in the world. We have gathered together and trained Afghan men, women and children since 2001 to become professional photojournalists. After so many years of silence under the Taliban regime, these photographers are fulfilling the very important role of revealing their own culture and history hrough their own eyes.
During the many long years of war, Afghanistan’s sad history has often only been described to the outside world through the lens and testimonies of foreign journalists. Today, as the Afghan people continue to participate in a process of reconstruction and democratization, and enjoy once again freedom of speech in their own country, providing Afghans with the knowledge and tools to describe their own history and points of view is critical.
