Bio
While working as a salesperson at a furniture store, I could not bear the thought of discontinued fabric swatches being thrown away. I knew there must be something that all these little pieces of fabric could be used for so I started collecting them and bringing them home. It was my mother who came up with idea to make a handbag with some of the swatches and the rest is history. We started making a few handbags for ourselves and as gifts for friends and family. Response to our bags was so positive that we decided to market them and that is how Marita Handbags were born.
Our family room has been converted into a sewing room where you’ll find us most evenings designing new bags and sewing. There’s a little bit of both of us in every bag we make together and that’s why we decided to combine our names and call them Marita Handbags.
The fabrics for each bag are hand picked and sewn to make a unique handbag. Since we are inspired by our once discarded swatches and supplement those with a variety of other fabrics and trims we rarely make two bags alike. Each bag takes on a personality of its own and so you will see many variations of our basic patterns. We also make jewelry keepers, bottle gift bags, and drawstring bags using the fabric samples. We hope you enjoy your Marita Handbags as much as we enjoy creating them.
Marita Handbags are made of a diverse range of fabrics including cotton, polyester, olefin, polypropelene, acrylics, rayon, viscose, and others. We recommend spot cleaning only with a cleaner that is safe for upholstery fabrics with cleaning codes S and W.
We also manage to find time to work on other craft projects as well. My mom is especially talented in the area of floral design and I love making t-shirts for my dogs and bath salts and powders for myself. You never know what we might be selling!
