Bio
I am proud to announce my membership in the following street teams: Etsy for Charity, Bookbinders of Etsy, and the New New York Etsy Group.
I recently (eep 2 years ago already!) graduated with high honors from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. While in school, I studied under the Writing for Publication, Performance and Media program. As enlightening and enjoyable as the program was, I started to veer from the world of creative writing, and have started to seek other outlets for my creativity. I know that writing will always be a passion that I return to, but accept that it isn’t going to become my source of livelihood anytime soon.
From writing, I jumped into book arts. Coached by the internationally exhibited Robbin Ami Silverberg, I learned the basics of binding, sequence, and glues. I make blank journals to sell, and sometimes delve into the artistic side of book arts (but I’m not so good at that!).
During my junior year at Pratt, I discovered the world of Papermaking. As a requirement for the Writing major, I had to go out into the big big world of NYC and close in on an internship. Feeling lost and undecided in what I wanted to do post-grad, I sought out the world of book arts and papermaking. Not thinking I’d actually land a “gig” in papermaking, I applied to Dieu Donné Papermill. Of course, what I least expected to pan out came to fruition.
And it changed the course of my professional life.
At Dieu Donné, I learned many papermaking techniques (pigmenting, beating with a hollander, pulp painting, creating and using molds, sheet formation, marbling, stencils, watermarks, and numerous other concepts), practices, and general maintenence (fun things like hanging felts up to dry and the like). I also learned I’d never be able to afford a Hollander beater. But that won’t stop me from dreaming.
From Dieu Donné, I continued on to Carriage House Paper, which is located in Brooklyn, NY. First I interned, and then I was hired on as a part-time studio assistant. I worked under Shannon Brock–who is absolutely amazing. I really enjoyed working with her. I continued to grow and develop under her wing.
I have expanded my knowledge of papermaking to include 3D techniques, a larger pigmenting scale, pulp pouring, pulp spraying, and various other tricks of the trade. It’s exciting. Of course, that profession also came to an end, but I'll never forget the papermaking skills I obtained during my time with CHP.
I am also loosely associated with Small Anchor Press which is headed by my friend Jen Hyde. I have made paper for book covers, assisted in binding the books, and also will work as an editor when the need arises. So, look forward to more information about SAP in the future.
And just to give a small update, I'm going back to school for my Masters degree in Early Childhood Education! Child-influenced art to follow? I hope so!
