Howdy!
I'm EXTRA CREDIT CRAFTS, a.k.a. Raoul de la Cruz. In my spare time, I make crafty little things to sell in order to help make ends meet. Don't we all? That's the "extra credit" part...'cause goodness knows we can all use a little extra sumthin' sumthin' from time to time! I participate in craft fairs whenever i get a chance (I'm a regular at I.C.E. Atlanta) and I also help coordinate the Athens, Georgia branch of the Church of Craft, with my "partner in divine crime", Missy Kulik (a.k.a. Sugarcookie). We also do a music/performance art project called The French Toasts. We perform show tunes, standards, and original songs, mostly on toy piano. We also use other toy instruments, regular instruments (like guitars) and various other noise makers.
So far, all of the stuff that I sew is done entirely by hand. No machines. I've never learned how to use a sewing machine. Everytime I've tried to learn, I've either gotten too frustrated or too scared that the needle will stitch up my finger. True, sewing by hand takes forever, but to me, it's like zen meditation. I rather enjoy it. Plus, I can sew anywhere I want! (like, in a cafe or at the library). Luckily, most of my projects are small enough to work on anywhere.
How did I get started crafting? A while ago, I used to play trumpet in this band that would tour the U.S. every summer. I started making these little felt pouches to sell at our merch table, to help raise food and gas money. Well, the pouches were always such a big hit, that I never really stopped making or selling them. I still make those bright little "Gas Money Change Pouches", along with a few other things. But my bread and butter are the pouches. Before Etsy, those pouches had been sold through on-line boutiques like Fred Flare and Copacetique, and have been featured in magazines like Real Simple and Teen People. Yay them!
