Bio
Michael,60 and Judy 57 were married on Halloween of 1972. We quickly left Baltimore, Maryland on a search for a rural piece of land. After a couple of months of touring America's Rural backwaters, we settled on a 160 acre mountaintop, covered with timber, near the Buffalo River in NW Arkansas.
Armed with little more than a small truckload of tools, a couple of chest freezers filled with food, and a pile of Organic Gardening and Mother Earth News Magazines...we set out to create our interpretation of low-impact sustainability. We built a small log cabin, and proceed to clear, log and saw out a house and shop.
This has matured into 150 acres of well managed timber, and 10 acres of garden, orchard, and pasture. We have logged and sawn the lumber to build our home and 8000 sq ft shop. The twins ...Jennifer and Alana...were born in 1984, and Christopher, 19 months later. As soon as they could plant seeds and use a broom they were made to feel they were a necessary part of the dream. Home-schooled, they are some of the best craftsmen and artists I have the pleasure of knowing.
Each year, we fill three, 23 cu.ft. freezers and a couple thousand canning jars with the finest organic produce and fruit. A one acre pond provides plenty of fish, and the surrounding forest is abundant with deer, turkey, and squirrels for the freezer.
Always aware of the harsh reality hiding behind this romantic picture, we have to keep one eye on the horizon.
If the snakes hawks, owls, skunks, weasles,'possums or 'coons are not killing our poultry and livestock, the bears, coyotes, and bobcats are.
Oct.30,2007....while checking on one of our deer feeding stations, Chris came upon a clear, unmistakable Mountain Lion track. We are still digesting that one.Our closest town is 25 miles away, and closest neighboe is a mile up a dirt lane.
Despite the bear chases, the poisonous snakebites, wildfires, ticks, chiggers and all the other attendant mishaps, we wouldn't trade for anything. The sunsets, sunrises, Milky Way at night, and electric sky during the day are the reward for some of the challenges.
