Like most artists I’ve been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. My implement of choice is the paintbrush, though I often apply paint with the palette knife, my hands or rags, or directly from the tube onto the surface. Sometimes I luck out and the paint just knows where to go. All I have to do is allow it. Most of my academic training was very traditional, drawing and painting figures and still lifes. While I still make frequent use of such source material, expression and painterly abstraction are what I’m most interested in portraying.
I like ancient tribal art, especially sculpture like the Moai of Easter Island, the giant Olmec heads of ancient Mexico, Egyptian art, greek sculpture, Native American masks. Art was an invention of the Shaman. That which he created had purpose and was imbued with his magic and energy. To this I aspire.
The sun and moon images are my interpretations of the Man-In-The-Moon and smiling suns with which any child is familiar. “All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up,” Pablo Picasso. Creativity is a continuous learning process.
Schools I attended at various times: Parson's School of Design (studied cartooning), the Art Students' League (studied figure drawing), and the School of Visual Arts (studied fine art).
