Spun's Profile

Bio

I am a self taught fiber artist. I learned to knit in 2003, and began spinning a year or so later. I wasn't satisfied with the selection of acrylic yarn in my area, and wanted to create with only natural yarns.

I used Alden Amos' Big Book of Handspinning, Deb Menz' Color in Spinning, and a truckload of Spin Offs as my teachers. That, and A LOT of trial and error.

I strive to use fiber that comes from farms that do not kill animals for meat. A favorite is Homestead Wool and Gift Farm. It is a rescue farm that treates their animals as family, and sells fantastic fiber and handspun yarn.

What's beautiful to me about spinning is that it's so versatile. Once you get the basics down and learn how to make a balanced yarn, you can start to think about breaking some rules and going a little nuts. If you aren't familiar with artyarns, check out www.pluckyfluff.com. Love her or hate her, Lexi is nothing less than inspirational.

My dream is to one day have my own self-sustaining off-the-grid homestead with fiber producing animals. Alpacas, merino or shetland sheep, rabbits...obviously that's going to require a move up north. I haven't seen many sheep in Florida. (though there are quite a few wolves in sheeps clothing...ha)
