Greenberry's Profile

Bio

Leslie Shelor is a native Southern Highlander, from the Meadows of Dan area of Patrick County. This area is rich in the traditions of music, arts and craftsmanship, and she grew up surrounded by people that were artisans in many ways. Many members of the family and community were talented musicians, craftsman, writers and artists.
From the time she was small, Leslie has been interesting in crafting. An older student taught her to crochet when she was nine and she experimented with many types of crafts. There were a few spinners in the area during her childhood but she became interested in spinning while living in Maine with a large Samoyed dog that produced quantities of fiber.
After returning to Meadows of Dan in the early 1990's, Leslie was given her great-grandmother's spinning wheel. This led to a renewed interest in spinning and the acquisition of a herd of German Angora rabbits to produce homegrown fiber.
into a small business. Leslie creates originally designed hand crocheted luxury items from the yarn she spins on both the antique wheel her great-grandmother used and on a modern wheel created especially for fine fibers such as angora. Her creations are often inspired by the beauty of the area where she lives and from the talents and stories of the people she has known all her life. She travels to craft shows and demonstrates her spinning skills often at shows and other events. Leslie is planning a shop near the family home place to expand the business, including antiques and books as well as fine hand crafted merchandise.
