Bio

We are two sisters, Bec and Jade, living in lovely sub-tropical Brisbane, Australia, at home with our little ones. We both have a passion for sewing, and a thing for bags, so Beckybean is the perfect enterprise for us.

We have a strong commitment to ethical consumption, and carry this belief through our design and construction process as we create our bags. Each bag is made from a large component of sustainable materials, including reclaimed textiles, vintage linens, trim, buttons and even mens' ties. We also support local designers who create new fabrics using environmentally friendly processes, such as using organic cottons and linens, and hemp fabrics, and doing hand screenprints using environmentally friendly solvent free inks.

Each bag is individually named by its maker. Bec chooses her names from characters, places, food, or general references from Enid Blyton books (her favourite childhood author), while Jade's bags are given 'foody' names – a homage to her second passion in life – good food (lucky she is married to a very talented fine-dining chef!).

Our latest enterprise is the Crema Range, which uses discarded coffee sacks (provide by Brisbane's local boutique coffee roaster, Merlo) combined with new eco fabrics such as hemp and organic cotton, and timber buttons that have been handmade and treated with linseed, by our dad. These bags are also individually named after snippits of conversation we have overheard in coffee shops (which means that going out for coffee and sitting in cafes now counts as 'research' :P.

Every Beckybean bag is labeled with the percentage of recycled/sustainable materials used in its construction. So when buying a Beckybean bag you can be assured that not only are you buying a 'sweatshop-free', handmade, one-of-a-kind piece, you are also buying something that has a very small environmental footprint.

Thank-you for supporting the ethical, handmade industry. It's not a big one, but we like to think it can make a difference ☺

Cheers,
Bec and Jade
