Dawno's Profile
Bio
I'm married and have two grown children - a daughter in college and a son in the Army, currently deployed in Iraq.
I love to read SF, mystery, thrillers and military fiction. I occasionally blog, although I used to do it more regularly. I moderate the Blogging and Politics & Current Events forums at Absolute Write's Water Cooler, a forum for writers of all kinds. I blog about myself at www.dawnonowyouseeit.blogspot.com, and about beading at www.beadedbadgelanyards.blogspot.com - come visit! Do leave a comment, even if it's to say "hi, I saw you at Etsy".
I work full time for a high tech company as a program manager, which is how I got addicted to beading. I have to wear a badge at work and the shoestring lanyards just don't look good with professional dress. So I decided to make my own jewelry style lanyards and other people wanted their own.
I love using small faceted glass/crystal (3 & 4mm) beads, seed beads, and tiny bead caps for my work. Many of my pieces use a lot of metal beads, caps and spacers to give them a richer look. I also like the look of semi-precious gemstones like amethyst, garnet and hematite although they often create a piece to heavy for use as eyeglass lanyards.
Each piece is sturdy. Instead of simple tube or bead crimps, for the majority of my lanyard necklaces I use a "Scrimp", which has a tiny screw to lock the beading wire tightly, but also allows for easy re-stringing. The beading wire is threaded through a wire guardian (also called a thimble in some places) where it connects with the lobster clasps to eliminate fraying. I use a swivel lobster clasp to reduce twisting.
