SummersStudio's Profile

Bio

“Let the beauty that you love be the work that you do” Rumi

I am a full time studio potter working from my own tiny studio a short walk out my back door.
I often use repeating symbols and motifs in my work. I build up pattern and texture on the surface of my work from stamps that I carve, found objects, and textiles. Mosts form start out as a slab of stoneware clay. Using templates, the clay is cut into shapes, which are then pieced together. The process is much like sewing, only a lot messier.

I've recently begun throwing forms again on my potter's wheel. Not content with just round, I alter these forms and add little (sometimes big) embellishments, extending my slab building techniques onto these pots.

Who knows where my studio work will take me?

All of my work is designed and made by me. Each piece of my work takes several days of construction so I tend to work in series, with the forms evolving during the making process. No two pieces are exactly alike and all will bear subtle maker’s marks, like a tiny dimple from my finger where I smoothed a join. I rather like these marks as they remind me that my hands touched this piece, that thought and care went into its making.

My work is made for every day enjoyment. All of my pieces are food, microwave, and dishwasher safe, unless otherwise noted.

I am a member the Llano Estacado Clay Guild and a former member of the South Australia Studio Potters and Victorian Ceramics Guild.
