BOwoman's Profile

Bio

It all started with the gold fish cracker. I remember looking down at one in the palm of my hand and thinking: that would make a good pillow shape. Adding the big button eye brought the pillow to life. From there I explored old books of fishes with the wonderful color plates and fish species charts with the wonderful hand drawn fish. I began designing shapes based on actual species and trying to emulate that hand drawn look.

Many people ask if I make pillows out of scraps from my upholstery work. Not usually. Actually, I get one yard pieces especially for fish pillows. When I am out scouring for fabric I spend hours designing as I go, sometimes informed by merely a unique fringe. I look at fabrics in terms of how they go together and see them as interesting tail, body or nose pieces according to their colors, patterns and textures. I make as many shapes as I can out of certain combinations using every last bit--even using the last tiny pieces for the button eyes--thus creating limited editions.

I cut, sew and craft each piece by hand including the contrasting welt and fabric covered button eyes.
I can often be found stuffing and hand sewing fish at my kitchen table while gazing out at the mighty mississippi river. I am continually finding inspiration in the surrounding landscape.

I delight in the continual discovery of a hand made life and cannot imagine a life without creating things.
