Bio
My name is Greg Turner. I like being a husband and dad, cooking, photography, writing, New Order and the Clash. I'm irascible, grumpy, an introvert and difficult to know. I'm also loyal and kind and funny. Hi.
Photography's a funny thing. Of all art, it's the most accessible, both for observers and participants. Each of us has held a camera, snapped a couple shots. Years later we look at those photographs and are transported, not to the time and place the photograph was taken, but to the time and place we remember, a place honey-toned with nostalgia.
I'm trying to get near that place in many of my photographs these days, taking photographs and capturing moments and scenes that are inherently linked with memories, both personal and shared. I want people to imprint memories upon my photographs, dredge moments past, fond or unpleasant, but not wholly their own. I want to evoke that sense of nostalgia, capture in photographs those images that linger with us, soft and faded, until we can no longer recall whether the memory is real or if we cling to nothing, a memory of memory.
About the Work
I want my images to be suggestive of snapshots. As such, I use standard lenses on standard cameras:
Pentax K10D
Fuji FinePix S700
Diana F+ (reproduction)
My current subjects are photographed from the car or on foot at the roadside. I do this so the perspectives will match those with which we are most familiar: the sky caught through the windshield, the quiet air and scene as we stretch our legs during a brief stop on rural highways. Once my digital images are captured, I load them from the camera into Adobe's Lightroom and alter them with surreal touches that are suggestive of prints from vintage cameras but retain and highlight the unreliability of memory.
All photographs are professionally printed by real, live printing experts. 5*5 with a white border, just like the olden days.
