I never played with dolls as a child. I had a doll once. Its eyes closed when I laid it down. I took its head off to see the mechanism but couldn’t get the head back on. I buried the body so my parents wouldn’t find out and wrapped the head in a bunting blanket. It surprises me that I now love thinking about and creating dolls.

I chose the name Dolly Llama as a play on words of the spiritual leader, who I admire. The art dolls do have a spiritual aspect to them. They seem to capture the essence of the divine in the people I know and love.

I also chose the name Llama as a joke on the Spanish word ‘llama’ because 'llama' in Spanish, means 'name'.

Surprising, too, are the spirits of the dolls themselves. Although I plan who they are to become, they take on a personality of their own.
They bring me joy.
