BornTooEarlyKnits's Profile

Bio

Hello, my name is Sue and many thanks for taking the time to pop in 

I have been knitting for as long as I can remember and as far as I’m aware, self-taught. I do remember saving my paper-round money to buy yarn to make a baby layette for our neighbour’s new grandson and ooh, that must’ve been 1968 or so! I will to admit to this failing though - I have no patience whatsoever with knitting larger garments, they got heavy and took me so long! So I concentrate on knits for babies and toddlers!

I love nothing better than to wander the dales of WestYorkshire, feeling the wind remove the cobwebs from my mind and listen to the silence broken by curlews - it is where my heart and soul lie. BUT eek, we live in SW London and am so lucky to have the stunning Richmond & Bushy Royal Parks on our doorstep. It never fails to amaze me how quickly traffic and street noise become muted, I close my eyes and my imagination flies north…….

As you might glean from this, nature & the outdoors are my inspiration.

*MY WORLD*

Hello, my name is Sue and this is just a small peek into my life – a happy world which I share with my soul-mate (I know how lucky I am!) and we live in a wonderful part of London, close to Hampton Court Palace, Kew Gardens and Richmond Park. I was by profession a nurse and a midwife, but sadly had to retire 18mths ago due to long-term health problems, and I miss it dreadfully.

My three daughters are grown up now, working & contributing to society and wow, I am so proud of them. My eldest has given me my two, most precious stars – Caitlin 3 ½ and Amelie 11wks. They hold my heart.

I have tinkered around with a good few crafts over the years and am completely self-taught in everything I’ve done. I love cross stitch, tapestry, knitting, sewing and have tried jewellery making & art (not much success there, but it was great fun). The one craft I have any training for is sugar craft and I do orders for wedding & celebration cakes locally.

When my girls were young I made everything they wore, mostly for economic reasons, but also because I thoroughly enjoyed it. My proudest moment was seeing Sarah, my eldest, aged 5, ready for her 1st day at school, wearing my pinafore, shirt and cardigan!

The breakthrough for me came when I was sold a second hand knitting machine – along with its incomprehensible Japanese-translated English instruction book…..! It took me a few months to learn exactly what both it and I were capable of and then a whole new world opened up for me.

Slowly but surely I built up a reputation in my local area for producing unique garments that folk actually wanted to wear – how’s that for an amazing feeling for a crafter!! I find nature gives me my most inspiration, the way she combines colours and textures is beautiful.

I have always adored knitting baby clothes, especially those for newborns. The idea for my niche area arose from personal experiences – both I and my daughter have experienced premature births, and unless you know someone who knits, it's impossible to buy those gorgeous little cardigans, bootees etc that babies look so cute in! And boy, have I been busy over the last few weeks!

And so ‘Born Too Early Knits’ too was born, admittedly a little premature itself, however, I will be listing very soon! There will be a variety of handmade knitted baby garments for premature babies between approximately 24-26 weeks (2lb/3lb) through to newborn (6lb/7lb); outfits for babies in NICU; shawls; christening gowns; angel gowns; pram toys & knitted fun items for any big sisters or brothers!
