What is a vector image and why would you want one?
In short, vector illustrations are drawn on the computer. They can be scaled as small or as large as your heart desires without losing any of the image quality. So they are perfect for use on a variety of mediums. Everything from tee-shirt designs to giant posters to tiny little stamp designs. Vector images will never appear fuzzy on your monitor and they will never lose resolution, no matter how many times you enlarge or shrink or use it.
The long version:
Vector images are a collection of individual objects rather than picture elements like a bit-matted image. Each individual object contained in a vector image is defined by a mathematical equation. This means that vector images are not resolution dependent. So it is scalable and can generally be resized or stretched without losing any image quality. In addition, images stored as vectors look better on monitors and printers with higher resolution. Therefore vector images are ideal for graphics such as maps and company logos that often require scaling. Another advantage of vector graphics is that representations of images often require less memory than bit-mapped images do.
Wherever possible, use the vector format for all your type, line art and illustrations and only use bitmaps for photos or images with complex or non-uniform shading.
