FeltedFuzzies's Profile

Bio

I was introduced to wool, and the methods of hand felting, by world renound fiber artist; Beth Beede. I took her wet-felting workshop in early 2007, and I have not stopped felting since.

Felt is created by physically tangling loose wool fibers into a dense, warm, and fuzzy material. This can be done a couple of ways:

Wet felting involves adding soap and water to the wool (to make the fibers more slippery) then repeated agitation, movement, and pressure gets the wool to felt evenly and flat. I use this method to create 2-D wall hangings, hats and orbs (felted around a round form) as well as seamless felted bags.

Needle felting is the method I use to create the three dimensional animals and pet portraits. This technique involves using a sharp needle that has downward facing barbs, that catch a few fibers at a time and push them down into the mass of wool, slowly tangling the fibers into a three dimensional form.

As a recent graduate from the New Hampshire Institute of Art, with a BFA in Illustration, I have created a number of illustrative murals and sculptures for photographic use, as well as interactive works where the viewer can experience the piece using their own creativity, arrangement, and composition skills.

Because I use a natural, organic material I am compelled to create works that follow with the natural trend. I create not only animals of every description, but whole felted environments- each complete with plant and animal life that live in balanced ecosystems. However vast and different the organisms may look, in their sizes and colors, they all are unified in their DNA- they are all created from the same fuzzy, organic material- Wool!
