Bio
Born and raised in New York City, Valerie Damon's life has been marked by immersion in the arts. Following an adolescence in the performing arts (dance and theater), her career as a jeweler began in the company of some of the pre-eminent names of the contemporary American Craft Movement. Apprenticing and formally studying early in her career fostered a profound personal desire to express her own creative perception as a visual artist.
Val Damon has been creating her own line of studio jewelry using gold and sterling silver since 2006 when she premiered at the American Craft Show in Baltimore. Her unique, artisan crafted jewelry is about contrast. Applying both ancient and modern metalsmithing techniques she combines the rough hewn with the delicate, the profane and the sacred. Her jewelry is fantastic, yet realistic, and is a joy to wear.
She continues to refine and expand her skills through ongoing, technique-specific courses at numerous arts education programs, as well as in private jewelry & metalsmithing workshops. She currently exhibits in major nationally juried craft shows, and has been teaching workshops privately since 2004. Her work is exhibited and sold in fine stores, galleries and museum shops throughout the United States.
Val's inspired and original designs are shaped by her life, creative passion and experience as a jeweler in the world's most diverse urban environment. They skillfully combine elements both masculine and feminine in handmade pieces which enjoy a broad appeal. Drawing on an almost genetic predisposition to metal-working, her work is traditionally inspired, innovative and timeless.
