StarfishJewelry's Profile

Bio

"Starfish (also called sea stars) are any echinoderms belonging to the class Asteroidea. The names "sea star" and "starfish" are also used in a broader sense to include the closely related brittle stars, which make up the class Ophiuroidea.

Starfish exhibit a superficially radial symmetry. They typically have five or more "arms" which radiate from an indistinct disk (pentaradial symmetry). However, the evolutionary ancestors of echinoderms are believed to have had bilateral symmetry. Starfish do exhibit some superficial remnant of this body structure, evident in their larval pluteus forms.

Starfish do not rely on a jointed, movable skeleton for support and locomotion (although they are protected by their skeleton), but instead possess a hydraulic water vascular system that aids in locomotion. The water vascular system has many projections called tube feet on the ventral face of the starfish's arms which function in locomotion and aid with feeding. The star fish usually hunt for shelled animals such as oysters and clams. They have two stomachs. One stomach is used for digestion, and the other stomach can be extended outward to engulf and digest prey. This feature allows the starfish to hunt prey that is much larger than its mouth would otherwise allow. Starfish are able to regenerate lost arms. A new starfish may be regenerated from a single arm attached to a portion of the central disk."

1. What is the name of your shop and what items do you sell?
My shop name is StarfishJewelry. And, well, I make and sell jewelry! ;-) :P

2. How did you get started in your art/craft?
One of my close friends and family members taught me. She got me started out and I have been going ever since! What a blessing!

3. Where are you located?
I am in the southernmost regions of Arlington, TX, which is near both Dallas and Ft. Worth. Land of the silly Cowboys!

4. Do you have a day job or is your art/craft your primary source of income? If you do have a day job, what is it?
I have many jobs!

In addition to selling jewelry, I also make and sell art (thecuriousbiologist.etsy.com), I am a musician (sitar, piano, guitar, mandolin), an animal caretaker (horses and snakes and hawks, oh my!), a writer for an environmental non-profit (Everyday Revolution...and we are always seeking out new writers!), and am working on a super-secret project!

5. What is your favorite part of your art/craft?
My favorite part is picking out the materials and deciding what will go with what. And an even better moment...taking a piece of junk and figuring out how to make it beautiful!

6. What is your least favorite part of your art/craft?
My least favorite part? Hmmmm...Sometimes I like what I make so much, I don't really want to sell it! This can't be a good thing if you are a 'The Secret' reader!

7. Do you listen to music or watch t.v. while you work? What do you like to have on in the background?
I like the boob tube...I feel really productive if I can get some documentary time in while crafting. It's a double whammy of fun!

8. Given all the bad news circulating about the state of the economy lately, how do you see handmade items fitting in? Are they more or less important?
Handmade is where we are and where we are still going. Handmade is about utilizing all of your resources, quality, and recycling...what could be better for the economy?

9. What inspires you? What motivates you to create?
Sometimes having a goal or deadline is the greatest inspiration for me! What? Someones birthday is this weekend? Hmmm...what would they like?
BAM!

New idea. And then it can be implemented into more of your work.

10. What are your favorite materials to work with? If you are a visual artist, what colors inspire you? If you are another type of artist, are there any scents/sights/sounds that inform your work?
Anything recycled is my favorite...anything from nature. The colors of nature are inspiring. Greens, browns, blues...Music has a way of helping my creations. Also, thinking of absolutely nothing seems to help. Empty brain=more room for in-spir-ation.
Think about that word for a minute.

11. What is your favorite season and why?
Ha! That's easy. My name is Summer and I was born in the summer and I would say, yes, that is my favorite! I love the heat and swimming and beaches and humidity...Rainforests rock!

12. And because I’m such a foodie, if you could have anything you wanted for dinner, cooked to perfection, exactly the way you like it, what would it be?
Mmmmmm....I love potatoes in all forms, I love mexican food...I would say some nice fancy cheeses with some specially baked garlic tators, then with some great guacamole followed by a giant creme brulee the size of a large pie covered in raspberries and blackberries.
Here ya go! Thank you so much! :D:D:D:D
