NewPrehistory's Profile

Bio

The philosophy of New Prehistory is to encourage a return to the ancient human art of personal adornment. Let us move away from plastic, disposable, and mass-produced jewelry. Instead, let us chose to adorn ourselves with materials of substance and significance.

Historically, objects of personal adornment were traded over thousands of miles and between thousands of people by a series of small, overlapping local networks. Through long-distance (and long timespan) trading, objects were imbued with the rich life histories of all who possessed them. Handmade beads, carved stones and other objects of personal adornment were treasured and commonly worn for a lifetime. The feelings of sacredness, antiquity and significance to the wearer that are so embedded in ethnic jewelry are the qualities that I hope to translate into my work.

Whether traded, bought, gifted, found or handmade, jewelry heals us, protects us, and marks our relationship to the world around us. With reverence for the old and the new, I invite you to become part of the New Prehistory.
