I like making things…taking basic, raw materials and transforming them into something new. As a teenager, there was always some craft project spread out on my bedroom floor. Now, with two torches, an anvil, an assortment of hammers, saws, files, pliers, and other tools, I can alter basic materials to create unique, pleasurable objects.

Sterling has always been my preference so, naturally, it is my primary focus. My pieces may be crafted solely from sterling or fine silver, but often include my own lampwork glass beads, Czech glass, Swarovski crystal, Bali sterling beads, gemstones, or other natural materials.

My taste has always run toward simple, clean designs. Maybe it’s my Pennsylvania Dutch background, but practicality is essential – an object may not be totally useful, but it should never be clearly impractical. You will find all my designs to be eminently wearable, conveying a classic, yet slightly funky sense of style.

For the past few decades, while raising two beautiful daughters, I set my artistic interests aside. Several years ago, though, I saw an advertisement for silversmith classes at a local arts center. I was momentarily intrigued, but continued flipping pages. Days later I came across the same advertisement. This time I hesitated, “Why couldn’t I do something like that? Hmmm…I really could do that!” After a series of silversmith and lampwork glass classes, I began selling my work to support this new passion. I sell my work at several art and craft fairs each year. One of the aspects I love most about jewelry making is that there is no limit to the tools, techniques and mediums which can be employed. As with any artistic endeavor, this is a life-long growth experience. I continue to learn, from personal experience and from numerous experts in the field, through books, e-mail, magazines, classes and lots and lots of practice.
