Bio
Hi, I'm Clare!
I'm a graduate of Parsons School of Design's Integrated Design Curriculum (where I majored in a handful of fields including fashion design, illustration, printmaking, and graphic design.)
When I'm not sewing, I work as a muralist and teaching artist everywhere in between Brooklyn and the Bronx.
Here is my design philosophy:
My main goal is to make people feel good about themselves. I make garments that accentuate the body, rather than cover it up, push it up, or transform it into something that it never could be. I don't believe in clothing that is created to solve a problem- the flaw doesn't exist until you design something for it. I feel that this is one reason why people are so unsatisfied with their bodies. You can buy a garment that will temporarily make you look "better" while you're wearing it, but when you take it off you're even more dissappointed than you were in the first place because you realize that it's not the real you. My lingerie is constructed to frame your body, fit comfortably, and make you feel naturally beautiful as you should.
The items that I make are the complete opposite of the whole "invisible" underwear thing. I would never make a bra with clear straps, because I think it's tacky and stands out even more than normal bra straps would- in a bad way. Everyone knows that you're wearing underwear anyway, so why not flaunt it? The bras that I make look great when they are layered with tank tops or loose sweaters. If you're wearing low rise pants and your underwear is going to stick out of the top anyway, wouldn't it be cute to see a layer of ruffles rather than the typical trashy g-string? I think of underwear more as an accessory than an undergarment- it makes dressing your self a lot more fun.
All of my items are made from eco-friendly materials. I use vintage fabric and trimmings for most of my garments, and any new materials that I use are made from organic cotton. There is so much stuff in the world, and more stuff being created everyday- why not use what we already have? Honestly, vintage textiles are so much more interesting anyway.
I hand make everything myself because it is my passion, so you can wear your items without feeling guilty about the underpaid workers in the Free Zone making your Hanes Her Way. I think of it as more of an artform than a product, yet it is still as functional as it is beautiful.
