MarlaLaubisch's Profile

Bio

BACKGROUND. I have 20+ years experience in graphic design and a degree in Advertising Design. I worked in the corporate world for (too) long, and now I freelance as a designer in print and digital media, as well as work part-time in a history museum and an art museum.

ABOUT ME. Female, red hair, green eyes, age undisclosed :-) I live in North Carolina now, but I was raised in Boulder, Colorado. I love both places; each is beautiful in different ways. I'm very happily married to a wonderful man. My hobbies are weight lifting, reading, and playing drums.

MY WORK. Although I've designed and illustrated for my entire career, painting is fairly recent for me. I spend so much time on the computer that I really appreciate the chance to work with my hands. I believe there's a tactile feedback in painting, or any traditional medium, that is sadly lacking in digital creation—there is just no opportunity for serendipity when wielding software. Painting involves all the senses—beyond the visual aspect, the different sounds the brush makes, the way certain mediums smell when mixed with the paint, the way the canvas feels... all contribute to a more engrossing experience.

There are always new things I want to try, different styles, different materials, so my work changes as I progress. Generally, I think of my paintings as embodying differing degrees of content versus technique. I am always striving to improve my technical ability, but am equally interested in developing the ability to make visual statements about my thoughts and beliefs.
