How to use a Hair Stick!

You can use hair sticks to hold many hair styles in place. If you can twist your hair and turn it on itself, you can probably use a hairstick.

First, hold your hair in a ponytail. If you are making a high bun start with a high ponytail, otherwise a French roll or a low bun start with a low ponytail. If your hair is very straight or slippery you might want to use a band to hold the pony tail in place.

Then twist the hair on itself to make a rope. Do it as tight as possible because it will loosen once it is in place. Twist the hair into a bun, or a French roll.

Take the stick, with the pointy end pointing up towards the sky. Catch the top of the bun or roll with it and push it through until an inch or so is sticking out.

Then turn the stick through 180 degs so that it is now pointing towards the floor. Push it back through the bun or roll - gently! If it won't go easily just wiggle it a bit and it will slide through. Make sure that before it comes out the other side that it catches the bottom of the bun or roll.

It won't take many practices for this to become second nature.

There are many video clips on YouTube you can watch to show you different styles.

About Eliza

Eliza is an artist who specialised in Scratchboard art. She has had shows in Australia and in the US and regularly has her art shown at Sci Fi and Fantasy Conventions in the US and Canada.

Eliza has had long hair and short, and thinks that long hair is better! She originally started woodturning when she lived on a farm, gave it up when she moved to the city, and recently took it up again to concentrate specifically (but not solely) on hair sticks. “There is a challenge to turning thin and getting the texture right. It’s very satisfying working with all the different sorts of woods as well.”

Nothing is warmer and more beautiful then timber - a gift from Nature herself.

The love of wood, combined with the love and understanding of long hair, have come together to create some truly magnificent hair sticks.

At ElvenHair, because we love our trees so much, we are totally ecologically friendly. We only use timber that has been recycled or reclaimed, never felled. You can read about the wood we use in detail in the section “our timbers”. Most of our wood is Australian - we have such beautiful timber here on our own shores that it seems unnecessary to go looking for it elsewhere. However, when we are given wood to try sometimes it will be imported, and of course, then we use it.

The beads we use are gleaned from anywhere, but we do like to buy from local craftspeople where possible.

Most importantly we value the safety of your hair. Used correctly, our sticks will not damage your hair. See our “hair care” section for hints and tips for growing long beautiful hair.

Because our sticks are hand made, and we use natural timber, sometimes tiny imperfections appear. We prefer to think of these as "features" and as long as they don't affect the way that the stick will treat your hair, we leave them be. Like Persian rug makers we feel that a tiny imperfection can improve the whole - making it clear that it is hand made, and not stamped out in a factory. Any imperfections will be fully described in the listing, no matter how small they are.
