Bio

I am a 23 year old mixed media/experimental artist based out of London, Ontario, Canada. Self-taught from a young age, focusing mainly on fantasy illustration and cartooning, I attended the prestigious Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax for a few years before parting ways to pursue adventure and inspiration so as to broaden my artistic horizons.

At this point I'm finding myself creating a variety of works that are very experimental. I love to experiment with texture, the interpretive value of mark making, patterns, contrast, and mixed media applications. Despite these new interests, my past fascinations with fantasy art, moody gothic-inspired themes, and animation/illustration still have great influence on my work today. I love bones, fossils, geology and biology, and the rhythms, textures and patterns that naturally exist in these sources. These ideas are often evident as re-occurring themes.

In contrast to these personal and material explorations, I also spend much time exploring the existing world around me through paint and drawing. Many of my plein air (landscape) studies focus on the relationships between colours and light as seen in the natural world. Often I find myself tearing down these subjects to their essence, leaving simple impressions or abstractions. I also enjoy nude figure drawing; many of these drawings focus on the complexity of skin colour and its translucency, and the beautiful forms of the body.

While my larger current works are mainly drawing, acrylic and oil-based, many of my smaller pieces are experimental media studies, which I use to develop techniques used on larger works. Many of these endeavors focus upon the use of visceral media including adhesive tapes, textiles such as fabrics, ribbons and fibres, and also recycled resources, both natural and man-made. I also mix many of these with traditional media such as acrylics, pastels, and inks. My goals are to always take my work to new levels, by mixing and matching different techniques, and searching for new, interesting effects which I can explore through my works. This creates a very interesting, ever-changing body of work, which I find myself often re-invented. The resulting works which I create are often both interesting to look at and touch.
