Oil painting on stretched canvas. This canvas has 3/4" deep unpainted edges. It will come with hardware attached in order to hang easily. This painting is signed and titled on the reverse.

The idea for "Roots #1" came from a painting trade that I did with the Beeswax Team. Our theme was 'sharing' and I had just started using tree imagery in my work. I loved the thought of a set of trees sharing roots together; living off the nutrients that they were sharing with each other. The image of the tree is a transfer of one of my photographs onto the encaustic. The roots are carved into the wax with a tool, revealing the color of the board and wax underneath.

What's encaustic painting?-- Encaustic painting is the use of beeswax and damar resin melted together and combined with dry pigments to create a painting medium. This paint is applied hot (not a cold paste) and manipulated with a direct heat source. This makes for a lovely layered image into which objects and photographs can be added.

I use only the finest ingredients and make it all myself from scratch which will ensure a long lasting painting. Living with and taking care of an encaustic painting is much like any other piece of artwork-- keep it out of direct sunlight and heat. You may want to take a clean white cotton rag and buff the non-photo areas, if need be (that will keep it shiny). That's about it!

This is a cradled panel and is ready to hang on its own-- if you would like hardware or wire attached, just let me know (no extra charge!) This painting is signed and titled on the reverse.

This listing is for a set of 2 cakes of a white/clear base encaustic medium. Medium is the clear coat that you use in encaustic painting. Each paint cake weighs approx 2 ounces. Larger quantity in stock, if needed!

My encaustic mediums are made from only the finest ingredients and with a recipe favored by old masters-- rest assured that you will be receiving artist quality medium that is archival and will last you through the ages! I wouldn't use or sell any other kind.

I use a fine naturally bleached (carbon process) beeswax and damar resin mixture to create these versatile mediums. I use a ratio of 1 part resin to 8 parts wax and slowly melt them together and strain the resulting encaustic medium to take out many of the impurities.

About the paint's arrival & use:
It's ready to use! As with all paints, you should be cautious when using and work in a well ventilated area. Since I don't use any type of oils in my mixture, you can feel safe heating this up but please follow the rules of encaustic and know what your flash point is. Encaustic painting is both rewarding and fun but please work and use at your own risk.

Often times when I'm painting I'll keep an extra canvas on the side of my easel and work out ideas, colors, or just to have an excuse to use the extra paint at the end of the day. This painting came out of that and I'm loving the colors and the movement! There's tons of texture from the dried up paint on my palette that I incorporated into the painting.

Oil painting on hand stretched cotton duct canvas with 1.5" thick stretchers. This canvas has 1.5" deep unpainted (gessoed white) edges, allowing you to simply display it as is! It will come with hardware attached in order to hang easily. This painting is signed and titled on the reverse.

Each day that I live in Maine I am in awe of the simple beauty that is a silhouette of a tree or group of trees against the unbelievable colors of the sunrises and sunsets. I have been working very hard on my new line of encaustic paint and am so happy to finally unveil it!

My paint is made from only the finest ingredients and with a recipe favored by old masters-- rest assured that you will be receiving artist quality paint that is archival and will last you through the ages! I wouldn't use or sell any other kind.

This listing is for a set of 3 cakes in the Primary Pop color line. These are made with a white beeswax base that lets the color shine through on their own. Each paint cake weighs approx 2 ounces.

The colors included are:
-Chinese Red (Vermilion)
-Canary Yellow
-Ultramarine Blue

About my process:
I use the finest dry pigments and add them to a fine beeswax and damar resin mixture to create these versatile paints. I use a ratio of 1 part resin to 8 parts wax and slowly melt them together and strain the resulting encaustic medium to take out many of the impurities.

About the paint's arrival & use:
There are many heating and cooling sessions in the making of this paint which may cause a small amount of the pigment to settle to the bottom of the cake. This has no effect on the paint since you have to remelt it when painting, so just give it a little stir. Otherwise, it's ready to use! As with all paints, you should be cautious when using and work in a well ventilated area. Since I don't use any type of oils in my mixture, you can feel safe heating this up but please follow the rules of encaustic and know what your flash point is. Encaustic painting is both rewarding and fun but please work and use at your own risk.

I am listing some of my drawings from 2000. *This drawing is a rare Watercolor & sum-i ink drawing using chinese brushes and a handmade reed pen.* The pigment was applied in very subtle tonal variations combined with the restful pose of the figure to make a very sensual meditative drawing.

The listed drawings are all part of a 1 year series of life drawings normally using only Sum-i Ink applied with chinese brushes and reed pens. There are small tack holes on all drawings from hanging them on my studio wall (see self-portrait above); most can be covered by a mat or frame. All drawings will be signed, dated, and titled on the reverse.

Each day that I live in Maine I am in awe of the simple beauty that is a silhouette of a tree or group of trees against the unbelievable colors of the sunrises and sunsets. The reds and pinks are the perfect backdrop for this many limbed tree. The image of the tree is a photo transfer onto the encaustic.

Encaustic painting is the use of beeswax and damar resin melted together and combined with dry pigments to create a painting medium. This paint is applied hot (not a cold paste) and manipulated with a direct heat source. This makes for a lovely layered image into which objects and photographs can be added.

I use only the finest ingredients and make it all myself from scratch which will ensure a long lasting painting. Living with and taking care of an encaustic painting is much like any other piece of artwork-- keep it out of direct sunlight and heat. You may want to take a clean white cotton rag and buff the non-photo areas, if need be (that will keep it shiny). That's about it!

This is a cradled panel which means that it has a frame built onto the back of it that will make for easy hanging! This painting is signed and titled on the reverse.

This drawing is by my husband, artist Brian Braley. I've finally been able to persuade him to list his beautiful intricate drawings which are a mixture of science, math, architecture, and nature. I know that you'll enjoy them as much as I do. The last photo in this listing is a sampling of Brian's other work.

This is one of my favorites and very hard to part with! It is drawn with such precision and amazing layering. The red and green background are reminiscent of cell structures and the bark of the trees mimic that pattern. The gradation of the black in the trees and the waviness of the roots make this drawing come alive. This would look stunning in a simple frame hung on your wall.

Brian Braley escaped from an isolated town in rural Maine in 1997. He holds a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art in Interrelated Media. A powerful expression of movement and immediacy-- this is a plein air painting (done outdoors) in a local land preserve. I walk hiking along and found this great tree stump with moss growing all over it. I did 2 painting directly from it and this is the second and largest -a real trip to get back to the car with while carrying the rest of my supplies! This one is done very loosely and is almost a sketch of the movement and feeling that I had while looking at the subject.

This painting is in a handmade float frame with a natural finish. It comes with hardware attached in order to hang easily. This painting is signed and titled on the reverse.

While I'm working on large paintings I like to keep these small canvases next to me and work out new ideas as they pop into my head. The Talking Pictures series is about letting the paint speak for itself. It's about letting the paint find its own way across the canvas. It's about giving up control (very hard for me!) This is the first composition in the series and my favorite so far. Created with remnants of discarded paint on my palette; the dried shells create a wonderful texture which give the compositions further depth.

As with all paints, you should be cautious when using and work in a well ventilated area. Since I don't use any type of oils in my mixture, you can feel safe heating this up but please follow the rules of encaustic and know what your flash point is. Encaustic painting is both rewarding and fun but please work and use at your own risk.

This painting is based of my immediate reaction to a wonderful Tibetan painting titled "Kamala, Suvarnadvipa, Viraya". `Viriya' literally means virility, perseverance, effort or energy. This is the first in a series of paintings in which I am exploring Eastern religions and the related artwork.

When this painting was conceived, I was working on a commission of a figure and was so happy to be mixing flesh colors again (it's been a while). I kept looking at my rag filled with excess paint and shaking my head at what a waste these good colors were. Then I wised up and started to work on this painting with all of the paint that wasn't to be used in the other canvas. Very happy with the results and I may even do a few in this color scheme.

This is #2 in a series of paintings exploring the dangers, hardships, and losses of war. Layer upon layer of wax and pigment is jumbled atop a Civil War image of soldiers to create a haunting image. (photo credit: National Archives; Soldiers at rest after drill, Petersburg, Va., 1864. The soldiers are seated reading letters and papers and playing cards. 111-B-220.) The strands of grass above the image represent the tired and broken bodies of these soldiers.

What's encaustic painting?-- Encaustic painting is the use of beeswax and damar resin melted together and combined with dry pigments to create a painting medium. This paint is applied hot (not a cold paste) and manipulated with a direct heat source. This makes for a lovely layered and haunting image into which objects and photographs can be added. You can see part of my painting process in the last image above.

I use only the finest ingredients and make it all myself from scratch which will ensure a long lasting painting. Living with and taking care of an encaustic painting is much like any other piece of artwork-- keep it out of direct sunlight and heat. I am listing some of my Sum-i Ink drawings from 2000. These are all part of a 1 year series of life drawings using Sum-i Ink applied with Chinese brushes and reed pens. This drawing is from a specific series of 4 drawings done from this same pose. All drawings may appear lighter depending on your screen resolution-- the reason I use Sum-i Ink is that it has rich, bold, and warm black variations so please keep this in mind when viewing. There are small tack holes on all drawings from hanging them on my studio wall (see self-portrait above); most can be covered by a mat or frame. All drawings will be signed, dated, and titled on the reverse.

My paint is made from only the finest ingredients and with a recipe favored by old masters-- rest assured that you will be receiving artist quality paint that is archival and will last you through the ages! I wouldn't use or sell any other kind.

This listing is for a set of 3 cakes in the "Candy Corn" color line-- doesn't it look tasty? Each paint cake weighs approx 2 ounces.

The colors included are:
-Titanium White (clear wax base)
-Corn Yellow - my own custom color! (mixture of yellow & clear wax base)
-Cadmium Yellow Deep (yellow wax base)

About my process:
I use the finest dry pigments and add them to a fine beeswax and damar resin mixture to create these versatile paints. I use a ratio of 1 part resin to 8 parts wax and slowly melt them together and strain the resulting encaustic medium to take out many of the impurities.

About the paint's arrival & use:
There are many heating and cooling sessions in the making of this paint which may cause a small amount of the pigment to settle to the bottom of the cake. This has no effect on the paint since you have to remelt it when painting, so just give it a little stir. Otherwise, it's ready to use! As with all paints, you should be cautious when using and work in a well ventilated area. Since I don't use any type of oils in my mixture, you can feel safe heating this up but please follow the rules of encaustic and know what your flash point is. Encaustic painting is both rewarding and fun but please work and use at your own risk.

This listing is for a set of 3 cakes in the "Instant Landscape" color line- perfect to start a landscape painting! (A title thought up from fellow Beeswax Team member http://tangledskystudio.etsy.com ) These are made with a yellow beeswax base that changes the base color and gives it that extra earthy elegance. Each paint cake weighs approx 2 ounces.

-Vagone Green Earth

A new series of paintings continuing to explore the dangers, hardships, and losses of war. Layer upon layer of wax and pigment is jumbled atop a Civil War image of a band to create a haunting image. (photo credit: National Archives, A regimental fife-and-drum corps. 111-B-328) The ferns above the image are from my garden and signify the fragility of these soldiers while also representing their individuality.

Encaustic painting is the use of beeswax and damar resin melted together and combined with dry pigments to create a painting medium. This paint is applied hot (not a cold paste) and manipulated with a direct heat source. This makes for a lovely layered and haunting image into which objects and photographs can be added. You can see part of my painting process in the last image above.

I use only the finest ingredients and make it all myself from scratch which will ensure a long lasting painting. Living with and taking care of an encaustic painting is much like any other piece of artwork-- keep it out of direct sunlight and heat. You may want to take a clean white cotton rag and buff it about once a year, if need be (that will keep it shiny). That's about it!

This board has exposed edges; you can frame this yourself or if you would like me to make a simple frame just contact me for pricing. It will come with hardware attached in order to hang easily. This painting is signed and titled on the reverse.

An optical illusion of sorts...can be hung any orientation! The idea for this painting came to me when I was talking to someone at a restaurant and bored out of my mind! I was staring past them and saw a parking garage across the street that had all these rectangular windows. I couldn't decide if they were squares or rectangles and occupied my mind with that for a while. When I got home, I started this painting.

Original oil painting with graphite on stretched canvas. The thick stretchers create a wonderful depth for this painting and are gessoed white with some paint seeping onto the edges. No need to frame! This painting is signed and titled on the reverse.

This is a painting from my college days. This was the main focus of my thesis...figures in an interior. I use myself as a model but it's not necessarily a self portrait. I am intrigued by the movement a person can make while remaining silent and calm. Painted mostly with thin washes of olive and ochre and thick palette knife applied paint. There is a myriad of color in the figure's face that compliment the background colors in the entire painting and are reminiscent of the old Italian masters.

Ok, I have a problem. I *love* tea. That may not sound like a problem but I *REALLY* love tea and when I made this group of paintings I actually sat down and figured out how much tea I drink in a week, on average. I drink about 17 cups of hot & iced tea a week. I'm ok with that, especially if there are cookies involved.

This encaustic painting has actual tea leaves embedded in it-- vanilla spice chai to be exact (my favorite!). It has the a tally of 17 hatched into it to reveal the underpainting which is a wonderful bright orange. The overall color is how I like to drink my tea-- milky! This was really a great mix since the painting smells like chai tea with honey-- perfect!

This is a handmade cradled panel and is ready to hang on its own-- if you would like hardware or wire attached, just let me know (no extra charge!) The painting is signed and titled on the reverse. Check out my shop for more paintings in this series...collect them all and hang them together!
