$125.00
Over a year ago I started a series of small chasings, all based off the same sketch of two English Ivy leaves. After I finished them all, I put them together in a series of small wallpieces- all very textural and landscape influenced.

This piece is the 5th of the series. The chasing is collaged with a number of other hammered steel scraps and welded to a steel block style frame. This piece has a strong intimate beauty to it and will make a bold statement on your walk. This piece is signed with my initials and the year on the back.

The wallpiece is coated with tung oil varnish and is suitable for interior display. The whole piece can hang from a single nail in the wall. It measures 8 x 5 inches or 21 x 12 cm at its maximum dimensions.

Steel is a very "green" material. Even when you buy new steel, it has likely been made from recycled steel, perhaps recycled many times over. For good info on steel recycling, see http://www.recycle-steel.org/buyrecycled.html

All purchases are packaged in lovely reusable gift bags and shipped by US mail, priority within the USA. International buyers are responsible for any taxes, fees or duties levied after I pay the initial US postage.
After I finished them all, I put them together in a series of small wallpieces- all very textural and landscape influenced.

This piece is the first of the series, one english ivy chasing paired with a single ivy leaf. It's a strong and simple piece, small and enchanting. It hangs on the wall easily by a nail or hook.
$100.00
Over a year ago I started a series of small chasings, all based off the same sketch of two English Ivy leaves. After I finished them all, I put them together in a series of small wallpieces- all very textural and landscape influenced. This piece in particular is influenced by the flash floods of 2007, in the Driftless region of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. The negative space, the open linear area behind the chasing reminds me of how the rushing water carved away and re-shaped so much of the nearby land.

This piece is the fourth of the series, one chasing, mounted with other pieces of textured steel, like a collage. It hangs on the wall easily by a nail or hook. This piece is signed with my initials and the year on the back.

The wallpiece is coated with tung oil varnish and is suitable for interior display. The whole piece can hang from a single nail in the wall. It measures 7 x 5 inches or 17 x 11 cm at its maximum dimensions.

Steel is a very "green" material. Even when you buy new steel, it has likely been made from recycled steel, perhaps recycled many times over. The intersection of the leaves and the twig make the pendant bail, so it really looks like a sweet sprig hanging off the cord.

The leaves and twig are hammered to shape from lightweight bronze sheet. The sprig is antiqued to a rich brown goldtone and then lightly sealed with tung oil varnish.

The sprig is approximately 2 inches or 5-1/2cm long. It hangs from a 20 inch black cotton cord with a sterling silver clasp. I assemble the cords and clasp myself, to insure a high quality necklace. Please let me know prior to shipping if you'd prefer a different length necklace.

All purchases are packaged in lovely gift bags and shipped by US mail. International buyers are responsible for any taxes, fees or duties levied after I pay the initial US postage.

I created the heart panel using the ancient techniques of chasing and repousse. Forged vines wrap around the heart and also create the fibula style pin mechanism. tThe entire piece has an ancient magical timeless quality to it. It will become a family heirloom, with much personal significance to the wearer.

The brooch measures 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 inches or 4 cm h x 4cm wide at its maximum dimensions. The photo with the black background shows the piece pinned onto a shirt. This style of pin mechanism is intended to be lightly sprung into place, like a safety pin. The pin itself should not be repeatedly bent back and forth.

All purchases are packaged in lovely gift bags and shipped by US mail, priority within the USA.

International buyers are responsible for any taxes, fees or duties levied after I pay the initial US postage.
Moving Metal by Adolph Steines - a book on Chasing and Repousse by a German Master

$32.95
"Moving Metal The Art of Chasing and Repoussé" by Adolph Steines has been translated from the German and published in an English hardcover version by Judy and Winfried Berger of Blue Moon Press.
ISBN 9707664-9-1
SAN 253-6455

The co-translator and publisher, Judy, is one of my good friends and mentors, a really wonderful woman.

This is my favorite book on Chasing and Repoussé, especially for medium to large scale work. Adolph is innovative in his approach and generously shares his years of knowledge, from design to execution and finishing.

The author is an accomplished metalsmith and silversmith, working from jewelry and holloware up to very large relief panels in steel and copper. In addition to chasing and repoussé he also covers quite a few metal holloware forming techniques such as raising, sinking, annealing and patina.

The pictures are from my own copy of this book. You will receive a brand new book, still in its plastic wrapper.

I do not accept returns for books. If you are unsure about the book, you should request it from your library or interlibrary loan before purchasing.

All purchases are shipped by US mail, priority within the USA. International buyers are responsible for any taxes, fees or duties levied after I pay the initial US postage.

I brushed it back for highlights and sealed the entire piece with tung oil varnish, to slow down the natural aging process.

The result is a piece that has a great color and a vintage feel. I hand hammered the leaves and put the piece together, in my distinctive romantic modern style.

The brooch measures approximately 4 x 3 inches or 10 x 8 cm at its maximum dimensions. It is large, bold, visually striking and still lightweight.

All purchases are packaged in lovely gift bags and shipped by US mail. International buyers are responsible for any taxes, fees or duties levied after I pay the initial US postage. International buyers should also be sure that their country allows the import of jewelry.

Hand hammered Copper Oak Leaf

$35.00
Oak Leaves- symbols of strength and endurance

I hammered this copper oak leaf to shape and burnished the surfaces to a rustic glow. These leaves are most often worn as a large pendant that makes a bold statment. It could also be hung as an ornament or on the wall as a small sculpture.

I would be happy to include a cotton cord necklace if you wish to use it as a pendant. Just let me know in the notes to seller during the purchase process.

It is sealed with tung oil varnish to slow down the aging process. Over time it will slowly age in tune with your own body and environment. Copper usually oxidizes to a rich brown or sometimes to greenish tones in the crevices, depending on its environment.

From top of the loop to the bottom of the leaf it measures approximately 3-1/2 inches or 9 cm. Its widest point measures 2 inches or 5 cm.

All purchases are packaged in lovely gift bags and shipped by US mail. International buyers are responsible for any taxes, fees or duties levied after I pay the initial US postage.
The project turned out so beautiful that it inspired me to make a series of metal bamboo wall art. The entire series, and other work, traveled to two exhibits in 2008.

This asymetrical wallpiece measures approximately 20 inches tall by 15 inches wide, at its longest and widest points. There is a hanging loop on the back. It will hang at an angle on the wall, using that loop. You can also arrange it at your own preferred angle using several nails or screws at various points around the piece.

The wallpiece is coated with tung oil varnish and is suitable for interior display.

Steel is a very "green" material. The entire series, and other work, traveled to two exhibits in 2008.

This asymetrical wallpiece measures approximately 37 inches tall by 13 inches wide, at its longest and widest points.

I handforge each of the grape leaves and hammer the vine from sheetmetal. The sheet metal wraps around into an organic hollow vine form. I weld it all together and add the candlecup. The steel has its natural heat colors. I burnish the piece to a nice silvery and black finish and seal it with a light acrylic coating for interior use.

This handforged candleholder is designed to hold one standard taper candle. It measures approximately 7-1/2 x 6 inches or 19 x 16cm at its maximum dimensions.

Steel is a very "green" material. Even when you buy new steel, it has likely been made from recycled steel, perhaps recycled many times over. I had plenty of leaves left over to play with and came up with some lovely combinations.

I hot forge all of the leaves from steel bar, weld them together, then burnish them to a rich luster. They are sealed with tung oil varnish for interior display. Hang them on the wall with several strategically placed nails or lay them on a table or shelf as sculpture.

This piece measures 11 x 8-1/4 inches or 27cm x 21cm at its maximum dimensions.

Steel is a very "green" material. After I finished them all, I put them together in a series of small wallpieces- all very textural and landscape influenced.

This piece is the 2nd of the series, one chasing, mounted on a steel frame, like a little block. It's a strong and simple piece, small and enchanting. It hangs on the wall easily by a nail or hook and may also be displayed on a shelf or tabletop. This piece is signed with my initials and the year on the back.

The wallpiece is coated with tung oil varnish and is suitable for interior display. The whole piece can hang from a single nail in the wall. It measures 3-1/2 x 2-3/4 x 3/4 inches or 9 x 7 x 2 cm at its maximum dimensions.

Steel is a very "green" material. Even when you buy new steel, it has likely been made from recycled steel, perhaps recycled many times over. Although it looks quite heavy, it's handforged and fabricated from sheet steel, making it surprisingly lightweight. At its maximum dimensions, it measures approximately 36 inches wide, by 24 inches high, by six inches in depth. The piece is sealed with tung oil varnish, for interior use.

For hanging, it requires about 2 medium nails, placed so that the Vs of the branch hang on the nails, in the position that you prefer. It weighs less than 5 pounds, so should hang easily.

The second photo shows the piece on a wall as part of a shop display. None of the other pieces are included.

The total price includes shipping, shipping insurance and crating. If you live close enough to pick it up, you may convo me for a reduced price. Due to shipping issues, I have only marked this for shipping within the USA.

Buyers outside of the United States would need to contact me for a complete shipping estimate.

Bas-Relief Eagle in Solid Bronze - Art for the Wall

$125.00
This is my original bas-relief image of an eagle in solid bronze, created with the techniques of chasing and repoussé. The bald eagles of the Upper Mississippi River Valley in Wisconsin inspired this piece.

Repoussé and Chasing are ancient metalsmithing techniques that have developed in several different regions, including Japan, Europe, and parts of Asia. Repoussé generally refers to work that is hammered from the back. Chasing refers to the work done from the front with smaller chisel like tools. Most pieces will use a combination of both techniques and often the two terms, “repoussé” and “chasing”, are used interchangeably.

The techniques can be used in many different ways- from the creation of slightly domed images, to simple texture, to the creation of highly detailed images. My own work finds its origin in the Japanese process of high relief chasing. This work is shaped primarily from the front, and is characterized by very lifelike detail and extreme shifts in elevations over the surface of the design.

I use these techniques in copper, bronze, brass, silver, gold and steel. The metal thickness measures from .040 - .045 inches. This thickness, combined with the metalforming processes creates a very strong and durable relief image.

The Eagle wallpiece measures 9-1/2 x 4 x 5/8 inches or 25 x 10 x 1.7cm. It hangs on the wall from a bronze loop welded to the back and is signed with my initials and the year it was made.
