a wonderful necklace celebrating German-American heritage, this antique celluloid badge was made for a member of the Deutschen Ordens der Harugari (German Order of the Harugari)

The fraternal organization was started in NYC in March of 1847 to promote German food, dance, song, and friendship. They sought to keep the best parts of their German heritage a cherished part of their new adopted homeland. Their motto was, “Friendship, Love, and Humanity” = represented on the badge in its original Deutsch "Freundschaft, Liebe, Humanitat".

The name Harugari comes from the old German word Haruc. It may be roughly translated as “The Teutonic spirit (or priest) of the oak tree.” Thus, it is a meeting place and tall, majestic oak trees...remind us of the spirit of our founders... the oak leaves on the badge are decorated with the initials of the organization "DOH"

I am fascinated by vintage advertising campaigns and collectibles. Whenever I stumble upon a whimsical piece such as the one included in this necklace my heart literally skips a beat.

The silver toned letter opener/magnifying glass showcased in this necklace was created as an advertisement for Phillips Milk of Magnesia. Why someone who is suffering from stomach pains would want to read fine print or correspondence from friends is beyond my comprehension...and yet the folks behind the Phillips Milk of Magnesia ad campaign thought this piece would be just the thing to spread the word about their product.

The letter opener measures 5" in length. The magnifying glass at the top of the letter opener measures just under 1" in diameter. The front of the piece is engraved with the brand name "Phillips" in their original advertising branded font while the reverse of the piece is engraved in block script with the name and description of the product: "Milk of Magnesia Phospho-Muriate Of Quinine Comp. Cod-Liver Oil Emulsion

The letter opener is suspended from a unique chain crafted from a variety of vintage silver toned chain most of which dates from mid-century

this exquisite necklace is truly a keepsake most dear.
an antique (late Art Nouveau or early Art Deco era) Whiting and Davis baby mesh purse has been re-imagined as a stunning, long centerpiece in this elegant yet bold statement necklace.

the incredibly soft (feels like cloth!) mesh is in a spectacular swirl pattern of deep and pale greens and purples in a lovely organic pattern. the bag frame is a yellow gold tone embellished with an art nouveau motif of tulips in raised relief. a rounded sapphire cabochon adds a beautiful compliment of color to the triangular clasp.
the piece is stamped with the whiting and davis motif on the inner rim of the frame.

the original purse handle has been incorporated into the design and is done in an intricate braided design that forms the left side of the necklace chain.
a length of antique amethyst colored glass rosary beads forms the opposite side of the chain and links to a vintage gold filled floral link and length of delicately detailed golden rolo chain.

this intriguing charm necklace showcases an antique medal in the shape of a mortar and pestle with a raised relief image of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument of Indianapolis, Indiana at its center. The medal was originally a part of a ribbon badge commemorating the 54th Annual Convention of the A. Ph. A. (American Pharmacists Association) held in Indianapolis from September 3rd through 8th of 1906

the medal was crafted by the renowned company Whitehead and Hoag of Newark, NJ

the intricate detailing of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument on the mortar and pestle design is incredibly impressive. Completed in 1901, the monument is only 31 feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty and was dedicated to the memory of Hoosiers who lost their lives in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican-American War, The Civil War, and the Spanish American War.
