Here is the American Sign Language sign for "I love you." This is a screenprint I made of my drawing, printed then dyed with tea...then glued to a painted red wood block and finished witha layer of beeswax and resin.

Please note, this is a sample block, your block will look very close to this, but because they're all handmade, tiny variations in pigment and placement will occur. Every effort will be made to create a block super close to this one.

Also, this block is about twice as big as my ASL alphabet blocks: it measures approximately 3" X 3 1/2" and 3/4" deep. A sawtooth hanger on the back makes it ready to hang.

...otherwise known as Our Ladies of the Coral Harem. You may remember these beauties from their past association with a piece of dark red coral, here they stand--or bob--alone, just their plain glamourous heads, in a tall vertical column of eight.

This is a black screenprint made from my original drawings, printed on a thick ivory paper called oaktag, signed and numbered in an edition of 50. Please note that this is a hand-pulled work of art, not a computer printout. Lovely as they are, these ladies each come with their own tiny blemishes.

Where to begin about this strange, wonderful creature?

The basics: it's a two color screenprint from my original drawings, an edition of 50. Paper size is 18" X 21" with the image size approximately 12" X 14." All created by hand, the red box he's placed in is just wanky enough to drive your architect and graphic designer friends crazy.

Now for the armadillo...this is a nine-banded armadillo, famous in Texas and Southern states although he's been extending his range Northward. German immigrants called him "Panzer Schwein," or armored pig, while in the 1930's he got the nickname "Hoover Hog." They can and do roll into balls like this, as well as jump straight into the air when frightened. They are mammals! Wow.

Rolled very carefully and mailed in a tube.

They're little, long-legged guys--only slightly larger than a robin, and they live in burrows. Unlike other owls, they're active during the day, although like myself they tend to avoid the mid-day heat. Like other owls, they do indeed make the who who call, especially males looking to attract a female to a "promising burrow."

The print: It's a bright medium blue screenprint from my original drawing, printed on oak tag, a sturdy ivory colored paper similar to a manila folder. Approximately 9" X 10," signed and numbered edition of 30. Mailed in a sturdy stiff mailer by first class mail.

This is a block of two porcupines from my Noah's Ark print. I like to imagine them waddling onboard, very unique creatures for sure. This is made from a pen-and-ink drawing turned screenprint printed in dark brown-black, printed then dyed with tea for age and character, and sized to fit this painted red wood block. Finally it is finished with a layer of beeswax and resin and a sawtooth hanger is installed on back to make it ready to hang. Or it perches nicely. It measures approximately 2 7/8" X 2 1/2" and is 3/4" deep.

This is a screenprint of the American Sign Language (ASL) alphabet. It is printed in a warm black for the hands and letters, and bright turqquoise/robin's egg blue for the borders. The paper is a thick ivory paper called oaktag, which is similar to a manila folder. Please note that each print is hand-pulled so prints may vary slightly. Paper size is 14" X 18," image size is about 10" X 14." My pitch: ASL is an amazing, beautiful language, and everybody should at least be able to fingerspell their own name...so throw this up in your breakfast nook and practice while you eat your cereal in the morning and see where it takes you. This is a screenprint created from a pen and ink drawing of two owls huddling together, or perhaps, as my friend Jean suggested, necking. It's printed it in a dark brownish black, dyed it with tea for age, character and that buttery glow, and mounted it on a painted red wood block. Finally I finished it with a layer of beeswax and resin. It has a sawtooth hanger installed on the back so you can hang it right up, or it looks great sitting on any flat surface. It measures approximately 2 3/4" X 2 3/4" (slightly wider than high) and is just shy of an 3/4" deep--chunky and charming.

This is a screenprint of a song sparrow on a tree. The orginal image comes from an old bird guide book, so the number "10" labels it as the song sparrow. I printed it in a very dark brown, cropped it and stained it with tea, and mounted it on a painted red wood block. Finally it is coated with a layer of beeswax and resin. This block is thick and chunky, and sits nicely on any flat surface. It also has a small sawtooth hanger if you want to put it up on the wall. Measures approximately 1 3/4" by 2" and is 1 1/4" deep--a very satisfying chunky block.

Here is Leda gazing devotedly into the eyes of Zeus, who has disguised himself as a swan in order to seduce and impregnate her. She bears him two children, Helen (who later became Helen of Troy, the face that launched a thousand ships) and Polydeuces. This motif was very popular in the Renaissance (when it was more acceptable to portray lust between a woman and a bird than between a woman and a man...), and the story has been revisited by various artists over the centuries such as Leonardo da Vinci, Cy Twombly, Paul Cezanne, and William Butler Yeats. I like to keep good company.

This is a two color screenprint--medium warm brown and a bright light turquoise. It is printed on sturdy ivory colored paper called oaktag. It measures 18" X 14." See if you can spot the trapper, the Madame, the undertaker, the banker, the sweeping boys, the sweet young "virgin," the rogue/miner etc. The numbers are their room numbers? I drew mostly from a bag of old photos I've collected, and there might even be a few of your relatives in there, fictionalized into my Boom-town brothel.

Tapirs are really interesting animals, related to the horse I believe. The Japanese call them "dream-stealers" from a legend in which they do just that. Also they are said to smell like "nothing so much as a crate of lettuce."

More teeth...
The teeth come from a copper-plate etching I made, which I printed onto old newspapers and pages of a vintage Russian (physics?) book. They are mounted onto this salvaged piece of lumber--it's from a house, probably some kind of vent or duct. In any case the "window" in it came with this little silver screen that reminds people of braces, given the context and all. The wod is painted a creamy white, and the whole piece is glazed with an acrylic gel medium to protect it and give it a little shine and unity. It has picture wire on the back so it's ready for a wall. It is 9" X 22" and is about an inch and a half deep. If you've gotten this far you probably don't need an explanation, but my first job out of school was temping the emergency desk at a dental university. That said, I find them to be beautiful, graceful little objects with many meanings; so they are literally and figuratively detached from any gore as far as the way I see them.

This piece is a collage of twenty old-fashioned style teeth on a bright light blue painted birch board, coated with acrylic to give it gloss and protection. The teeth are from an etching I made, which I then printed, dyed with tea for age and character, and then cut the teeth out individually. It measures 5"x7"and is 1/2" deep. This is a collection of five bird blocks. The original images came from an old bird guidebook which I made a screenprint of, dyed with tea, and mounted on to individual painted red wood blocks. I finished them with a layer of beeswax and resin. Number 10 is a song sparrow, 13 is a bluebird, 22 is a cardinal, 25 is a horned lark, and 6 is a cow-bird. They measure in the neighborhood of 1 3/4" inches tall and wide (most a little taller than wide) and 3/4" deep. They sit nicely on any flat surface, but they are also installed with tiny sawtooth hangers so they could be hung on the wall. They look great as a set, individually, grouped into smaller sets...or part them out to your friends as tiny gifts.

Otherwise known as a "straw flower," this is an illustration of a flower that just will not wilt. Many mistake this etching for an artichoke and that suits me fine too.

Since these are made by hand and part of the process involves dying the prints with tea (for an intentional aged look,) there are variations in pigmentation. My next door neighbor came over today and asked "Are you gardening today Sarah?" Well no, actually I was putting soil in a pot so I could poke a screenprint of a tiger and a lady on wooden dowells into the soil. You could use these as puppets, unusual birthday cards, planter adornments....however you like. They're screenprints on oak tag (a sturdy paper kind of like a manila folder). They are not waterproofed or weatherproofed, so they would be best indoors, and even so will probably not last forever, but they'll be fun while they're around.

I send you the prints as shown and a set of dowells. YOU assemble them by taping light colored masking tape on the back as shown.

What it definitely is: a red and black screenprint on Arches 88, (a thick cottony printmaking paper) signed and in a limited edition of 25. Paper size measures 15" X 20," with three or four inch borders around the image. Shipped flat inside cardboard; international order would be rolled gently in a tube to avoid oversize shipping charges.

The Letter E

This is a block featuring the letter E--the sign for A in American Sign Language (ASL) and then the letter "E" printed in red. Taken from my ASL screenprint. It's printed then dyed with tea and adhered to the painted red wood block (I am using red oak for wood), then finished with a layer of beeswax and resin. This one measures approximately 2" X 2 3/8" and is about 3/4" deep. Sawtooth hanger on back so it's ready for your wall, or perches nicely. FYI different letters vary in size depending on the shape the hand makes.
