It is said that Titian's model for Flora was his mistress. And a clerk taking inventory of the property of Peter Paul Rubens listed "Four pictures of Venetian courtesans, after Titian." "Flora" is believed to have been one of them. Vasari records that Titian painted his portraits of ideal womanhood more from imagination than from models. Some of us, looking at "Flora," will believe this.

•This color book plate by Italian painter Titian is in very good vintage condition. Liberated from an art book printed on high quality paper in 1939, this print is ready to be matted and framed. The paper (once an off white) now shows some warmth through tanning. Also, some lines imprinted from the actual image, which is printed on a separate piece of semi-gloss paper, that is glued to the heavier stock back. The "white" space that surrounds the image makes matting much easier and more flexible.

•Titled: Flora by Titian.

•The page measures approx. 8-1/8" by 11-1/8".

•The image measures approx. 6-3/8" by 9-7/8".
