There is nothing cuter than a baby koala and these slippers say it all! Designed and made by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees in Australia, these lil koalas are really special. They are an ideal gift for a special toddler.

Booties have a length of 4.25inch/11cm. With a height of 2.5inches/6cm which is about right for approximately 3 - 9months age group. Of course kids feet differ and there is a bit of stretch in these.

The colours are a variegations of lavender, pink and white and I have used snazzy ribbons with the word "cool in purple. The pretty white cuff can be worn up or folded down. The koala is grey with a cute little nose and ears and I like how the bow sets her off. The colours are pretty and would make an ideal gift for a special little lady. The yarn is an Australian made washable acrylic.

Although the yarn is machine washable, I would suggest washing by hand.

As these koalas are originals from Australia they may take a week or two to reach you overseas. I lovingly pack all my work to keep it safe for the journey and have mastered the art of flat packing items so as to reduce your postage costs. Everything I make is one off and special.

Brumby Horse Square rugalugs crochet pattern.

Although an introduced species by the early settlers, horses have a significant place in Australia. They have an important role for our stockman in the outback and horse racing is a popular sport. There are more feral horses (brumby) in Australia than any other country. The famous Australian poem "The Man from Snowy River" by Banjo Paterson (1890) tells of a horse escaping to live with the brumbies. It is a poem about horses and the early stockmen. I designed this square on request for a little girl who is mad about horses, and her mum is making her a horse afghan.

This pattern package gives crochet instructions for a horse head and behind square, and project instructions for a jockey style cap. A second edge variation is included to enable you to mix with other rugalugs squares
The ears, mane and tail give a textured effect, and the bridle across the face is optional. The finished square approximately measures 13cm/5inches.

Introducing the pattern set for the Australian echidna and baby echidna puggles. These guys rock!

This pattern set includes full instructions for making an echidna adult and echidna babies. They are worked in 8ply, double knit or worsted weight yarn using a 4mm hook. The puggles are particularly cute and look great done in different colours. These are great party treats, and are something a bit different in the crochet, amigurumi stuffed animal world.

The echidna, is also called the spiny ant-eater, and is one of the most primitive orders of mammals. They are closely related to the platypus and are egg-laying mammals. They lay only one egg at a time which is incubated in the pouch. Baby echidnas are called puggles and remain in the pouch until its spines appear. I guess a kid with spines in your pouch is a bit much to take! Their main food is ants. Baby platypus are mistakingly called puggles too however no such thing exists.

Echidna look like a hedgehog or porcupine but are not related. Their backs and sides are covered with spines and coarse hair and they can roll themselves into a ball when in danger. While they look pretty tough, they are quite shy. They also have the claim to fame being of being featured on the Australian five cent piece.

Wombat- crochet pattern

Meet the wombats. These guys are having a good time out of the burrow. They are crocheted in worsted weight yarn, 8 ply or double knit with a 4mm hook. For a smaller wombat try a finer yarn - 4ply with a 3.5mm hook. They measure approx 5inches/13cm from the nose to tail.

These are part of my Australian Amigurumie Marsupial Madness series.

These little guys are great fun to make and are cute soft toys.

Wombats are stout, sturdy animals and live in burrows. Like the koala they are marsupials. They grow to about 1.3 metres in length, and can weigh up to 36 kg. They have a large, blunt head with small eyes and ears, and a short, muscular neck. Their sharp claws and stubby, powerful legs make them great diggers. The last picture is of a real wombat I snapped earlier this year. They are funny little critters!

They dont get out much, but they sure have attitude.

I called these guys Pesky, because they have taken me forever to perfect! Possums are a protected species down here but are pesky when it comes to eating the fruit off the passionfruit vine, and the paw-paws in the back yard!

I humbly declare that I think these are my cutest critters yet, and well worth the wait.

Ringtail possums are a medium sized species. Fully grown they are the size of a kitten or large guinea pig. Tails are very long with a distinctive ring and often have a white tip.

Brushtail possums are a larger species and when fully grown they will be a little smaller than an adult cat. Tails are black and fluffy.

Glider possums. There are several species of gliders including sugar gliders and pygmy possums. All gliders have a membrane running down each side of their body which they use as sails to glide from tree to tree. These are tiny marsupials which can fit in the palm of your hand.

The trendies would call this amigurumi. To me it is basic crochet. I have tried real hard to make these little guys reflect the gentleness of the creature as found in our Aussie bush.

This is number 5 in my "rugalugs" fun crochet motifs series. These are fun motifs designed with kids in mind. This one is based on Australian Red Eyed Tree Frog. I didnt have any amphibians in my store and now I am kneedeep...

These little guys live in the rain forests of North Queensland, only coming down out of the trees to breed. They are nocturnal, so rarely seen. They have cousins in the forests of South America. As our rain forests diminish, so has the population of these little frogs. In life they are about 6.5cm and their distinctive eyes vary in colour from bright red to orange. The skin is a bright green with a yellow under belly. It is thought that the eyes are a deterrent to predators. As if a frog can be pretty these ones certainly have an interesting appearance.

Pattern includes instructions for making the Red Eyed Frog as a motif in thread or yarn, and then how to make a square for projects, afghans and rugs. I have also provided a second edge option so you can match other squares in my rugalugs series. Also includes a bonus sheet for making a frog hat. Playful Platypus crochet pattern

"Ornithorhynchus" is one of those words I remember from my school days. It was always on the advanced spelling list! So what is it... no less than the humble platypus.

If I was a trendy I would call these "Amigurumie Ornithorhynchus" ! (boy what a tongue twister!)But I am a bit of a nerd, so to me they are just plain old crocheted Platypus.

I am old fashioned, but I like toy animals that resemble the animal, and don't look like a Disney wanna be, or some poor feral animal that has been in a fight.

The patterns for these are designed to be made on with an 8ply, worsted weight yarn using a 3.5mm hook. By using a smaller hook, and lighter yarn he becomes smaller.

You will be sent a pdf file with both Australian and American instructions.

The platypus is particularly shy. They are nocturnal, and very quick to move. Quite an odd looking animal really, an egg laying mammal with a funny bill, and webbed feet. The bill always looks like it has been glued on.

Early British colonists in Australia called the platypus a "water mole".

More than one platypus are called "platypus" or "platypuses". There is no such thing as "platypi" although I have heard this term used. They are also the little fellow on the Australian 20c coin. Now there is some platypus trivia for you!

Didyaknow the wallaby is smaller than a kangaroo, but from the same family? These are rock wallabies and are having fun with their boomerangs playing in the rocks. Call them kangaroos if you prefer! There isn't much difference in the joeys as they are all pretty cute and innocent looking. Yep this is a fair dinkum crochet roo!

Long before there were kangaroos down here Dinosaurs roamed Australia. Stegosaurus had a very small brain so wasnt the sharpest tool in the shed! He was rather cool though, with his distinctive spikes.

Pink and Red Mallee Mittens (toddler - preschool) etsykids

These Pink and Red Mallee Mittens are designed and made by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees in Australia. They are an ideal gift for a special little pair of hands for a small child. I just love this colour mix of pink, mallee red and variegations of pink, blue and yellow. The centre of the Mallee flower has a bright button. Mallee is a type of eucalyptus with an amazing layered flower and a distinct centre.

Mittens have a palm circumferance of 5inch/13cm and are 6 inches/ 15cm full length from the edge of the wrist band to the finger tips. These are in the small child range of toddler to preschool.

These are my original crochet patterns inspired by the Australian lifestyle and environment. The Ugg boot is an Australian icon, and is made from 100% sheepskin and fleece. Ugg is a generic word in Australia referring to woollen boots. Ugg boots have been around since the Second World War and were popular in the 60s and 70s for surfers. They were considered bogan until their recent raise to fame. Because the real uggs are made of wool I prefer to crochet these in pure Australian wool to achieve the woolly warmth. Nothing can surpass the real thing, but these booties are a bit of fun.

This pattern package gives crochet instructions for ugg booties in 3 sizes.
(a) Small – baby- 6months, approximate foot length = 10cm/ 4inch
(b) Medium – baby 6 – 12months, approximate foot length = 11.5cm/4.5inch
(c) Large – toddler approximate foot length = 13cm/5inch

This design is inspired by the tea tree (Leptospermum) growing in my front yard. It is an Australian native plant which blossoms with tiny white or pink flowers, with a dark centre. They smell heavenly and the birds and the bees love them. Full of nectar they are the basis for Leptospermum honey. Tea tree oil, by the way doesn’t come from the tea tree but the Melaleuca, which is actually a paper bark. Not sure how the oil became mis- named.

Designed and made in Australia, these lil booties are really special. They are an ideal gift for a special baby.

Booties have a length of 4inch/10ch. With a height of 21/2inches/6cm. This about right for an average bub from newborn to age 6months.

These little darlins are designed by me and crocheted by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees. The colours are white with a fleck of pink, blue, and lemon, with red trim and removeable heart ribbons.

The yarn is an Australian made washable baby weight acrylic. Although the yarn is machine washable, I would suggest washing by hand.

Delivery may take a week or two for overseas destinations. Please note I flat pack these carefully in plastic to reduce postage costs and ensure the garment is protected.

Did you know the budgie is actually an Australian Native bird and is the most popular pet bird in the world? In the wild they live amongst the grassy plains and open scrubland of inland Australia and gather in large flocks.

There are over thirty species of budgies that are available today and they are all descendants of the original light green coloured Australian budgie. Nowadays the original Australian Budgie is a protected species and cannot be kept in captivity. Australia has the most amazing native birds, and the budgie is one of them

This pattern set includes full instructions for making a crocheted budgerigar. I have included excellent step by step photos. The budgie is worked in 8ply, double knit or worsted weight yarn using a 4mm hook. They are a great use of all those scraps of yarn as you have fun making your own mutations.

The finished budgie measure 17cm/7inches tip of tail to top of head, or 10cm/4inches when sitting. They are pretty much life size.

These little booties measure approx 10cm/ 4inches long and 3inches/8cm high with the band folded down. Sized for a baby - 6months, and are cute little things. They are a variegated shades of blue. The booties are 100% pure Australian wool with a band of mohair/wool mix. Hand washing in warm water is recommended.

The koala is one of Australia’s iconic animals. They are marsupials, and NOT bears. Koalas have a very large nose which helps them identify eucalypts as they are fussy eaters. Each koala eats from 200 – 500 grams of leaves a day. They are nocturnal and sleep most of the day so they can party at night. Baby koalas are called joeys, which like kangaroos start in the pouch, and spend the first months of life in their mothers pouch.

Now that it is Spring here in Australia Christmas is just arround the corner. This is my latest for livening up the Christmnas table, or for popping under the neighbours Christmas tree. Christmas themed crochet casserole pot toppers and hot pads.

The Rainbow Lorikeet is a small parrot native to Australia and is incredibly colourful. Colours to try when making rainbow lorikeets include yellow, green, orange, blue and red. They have red beaks and red eyes. Rainbow lorikeets are found all over the north-east of Australia. Their habitat ranges from forests of all sorts (heathlands, bush, rainforest) coastal or inland, to any area including urban areas that have suitable trees - (including my back deck!) They are normally found in flocks and make a heck of a racket at feeding time. “move over will ya mate so I can have some seed as well?" "crikey mate I was after that bit"

I have attempted to achieve the look of the rainbow lorikeet without getting too complicated with the pattern. I hope you have fun making these. The ones pictured are visitors to my veranda. They like modelling for my patterns.

This is the original Koala pattern by cupcake from downunder.

Didyaknow the koala is a marsupial NOT a bear. They have a dopey look cos of a eucalyptus high. This is one reason why Koalas don't do well outside Australia. They eat mountains of gum leaves. They are true vegetarians and quite fussy eaters. Eucalyptus leaves are very fibrous and low in nutrition. Koalas have a very slow metabolic rate which helps them maximise the nutrition from the leaves. They have a tough life and sleep for up to 18 hours per day in order to conserve energy.

Introducing True Blue Kangaroo! This critter reeks of Australian patriotism. The Kangaroo is the largest of the macropod family and this roo is about 30cm/12 inches tall from head to toe. If you look at the last photo you can see how True Blue compares to the Wallaby Joeys which are a separate listing.

The pattern gives crochet instructions for an adult Kangaroo with or without a pouch. Male kangaroos dont have a pouch as it is the female who carries the joey. The gum leaf neck tie sets her off.

Instructions are provided in Australian/English and American terms. Materials used include 12ply bulky/chunky weight yarn, with a 4.5mm (7) or H hook. This makes for a sturdy kangaroo which is a nice sized kids toy. By making your own childrens toys you can be sure they are safe.

Red kangaroos are found on the flat open plains, grey kangaroos prefer denser bush, and Rock-wallabies live among piles of boulders, rocky hills and cliffs. Wallabies and Kangaroos are like rats and mice in that they belong to the same family but are a different species. They are easily confused.

“True Blue” is an Aussie saying that means honest or sincere. The pattern looks just as good in natural colours.

So what the heck is a bilby???

The bilby, sometimes known as the rabbit eared bandicoot is a marsupial with a backwards facing pouch. Bilbies are nocturnal ground dwellers and live in burrows. They are protected in Australia as only 600 now live in the wild. There used be 2 types of bilby, but one species has been extinct since 1931. The introduction of the rabbit, fox and cat to Australia destroyed habitats and in attempts to catch feral animals, as many native ones were killed. The “save the bilby” campaign has been active for a number of years, with the slogan “Bilbies not Bunnies” used at Easter to promote the plight of this little animal. Sales from chocolate bilbies go towards conservation efforts. The rabbit has been an environmental disaster in Australia, and needs to be eradicated from our country to enable the survival of the bilby.

Australian Wallaby crochet preschool beanie in green and gold (etsykids)

This is a wallaby beanie in the Aussie sports colour of Green and Gold. I did this one in honour of the Australian Wallaby Rugby Team who are playing in the World Cup.

This special beanie will fit a little kid with a cold head, approximate age toddler to preschool, maybe longer as it has quite a bit of stretch.

Hat measures 18in/46cm circumference, and a height of 7 in/ 18cm.

This little number is designed by me and crocheted by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees. The Wallaby is light brown with a green and gold background, and I have included a touch of lime green to spruce it up. The colours are gender neutral, but might have particular appeal to a little bloke who wants to be a wallaby when he grows up. The beanie has one cute face on the front, and 3 granny type squares around the side and back. The ears and nose provide texture.

The yarn is an Australian made washable worsted weight acrylic. Although the yarn is machine washable, I would suggest washing by hand.

So what is the difference between a kangaroo and a wallaby? Both belong to the macropod familiy of marsupials which includes kangaroos, tree kangaroos, pottaroos and wallabies. Wallabies are very similar to a kangaroo but generally have a much smaller build. They often have finer features and thinner tails. The pretty face wallaby is a real cutie. So wallabies and kangaroos are like a mouse and a rat and they are often mistaken for each other.

Your beanie will be delivered to you by mail. As this comes from Australia this may take a week or two to reach you overseas. Buy several items and I will minimise postage costs. I lovingly pack all my work to keep it safe for the journey and have mastered the art of flat packing items so as to reduce your postage costs. Everything I make is one off and special.

This Beanie is made of a mix of 70% wool and 30% alpaca. The colour is a stunning Fuchsia Pink and I have added 2 vintage buttons to the side for a bit of pinnaz.

Hat measures 52cm/ 20.5 inches when relaxed and is 17cm/ 7 1/2 inches high.

It is a snug fit and looks good on a teenager - adult. This is a very flattering colour in a high quality yarn, that requires hand washing.

Surfie Chicks - at the beach (aussiegurumi crochet pattern)

Meet Kylie, Nicole and Kathy the Surfie Chicks. These are the girls who play in the sun sand, sea and surf. They have a life, and enjoy it greatly. I call this Aussiegurumi, not quite amigurumi - but close! The Gold Coast is the home of the bikini as this is where the designer Paula Stafford started. Makes perfect sense having seen the beaches here.

This pattern set includes full instructions for making the three surfie chicks shown. They are worked in 8ply, double knit or worsted weight yarn using a 4mm hook. These chicks are a great use of all those scraps of yarn as you can have fun making your own beach fashions. The Surfie chicks have a few accessories, a sun visor, beach towel, sun hat and beach wrap. I even gave Kathy a navel stud seeing this is the go these days.

This pattern series includes pdf patterns to be worked in a 4ply, (size 10 thread) and include scallops, pipi, baby sweetip, large and small periwinkles and the spanner crab. I had a fun time designing these which would look fantabulous as appliques on summer items.

My memories of summer as a child include searching for treasures on the beach and in the rockpools of the Queensland Coast. As a kid we would always go to the Sunshine Coast or Stradbroke Island, or to my Grandma who lived on the Esplanade of Moreton Bay. I would always come home with buckets of shells. My brothers and I would try and catch the little fish that got stranded in the rockpools or lagoons at the beach. I designed the little fish to use a minimum of thread.

The scallop shell, and the pipi are bi valve shells that are quite common. If you walk along the beach and squish you toes in the sand you can find them. Fisherman use the flesh of the pipi for bait.
Periwinkles have a nice spirally shell. These patterns include both a large and small version. The spanner crab is a Queenland delicacy. He has large claws like a spanner.

This is a Tasmanian tiger scarf for a little kid with a cold neck, approximate age toddler – preschool.

Scarf measures 4in/10 wide, and 44 in/ 112cm long.

This little number is designed by me and crocheted by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees. The tigers are ginger, and I have used a ribbed stitch with bold stripes of caramel, gold, ginger, cream and variegated browns. The colours are gender neutral, but might have particular appeal to a little bloke. I love making things for little boys as I have three sons of my own. The scarf has a tiger face on each end and the ears, nose and whiskers provide texture. The tiger face has a cat like appearance.

The yarn is an Australian made washable worsted weight acrylic. Although the yarn is machine washable, I would suggest washing by hand. These tigers prefer a hand wash rather than a spin dry!

The story of the Tasmanian tiger or thylacine is a sad one as they were declared extinct in 1986. The Tasmanian tiger was a marsupial dog with a pouch like a wombat, a head like a dog, and stripes and tail like a tiger. Their demise was accompanied by European settlement and the introduction of sheep to Australia. The last on died in the Hobart Zoo on the 7th of September 1936. The 7th of September is now marked as 'Threatened Species Day'.

Barramundi Fish Baby Beanie and Booties (hand crochet) etsykids

This little Barra beanie and booties are hand crocheted and designed by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees. These are based on the barramundi fish.

This “barra beanie” will fit newborn – 6months. Hat measures 15in/38cm circumference, and a height of 6 ½ in/ 16cm. Booties have a length of 3.5inch/9cm. With a height of 2inches/5cm. This about right for an average newborn bub.

The barramundi is the most delicious fish and is found in our freshwater streams of Northern and Coastal Australia. Barramundi is an aboriginal word meaning "large scaly fish". While they are native to Australia they are farmed fish in other parts of the world.

Pastels dont photograph real well, but this is in really sweet colours. Beanie has a lemon fish, surrounded by white, mint and aqua. The booties have baby fish and nice satin bows. The goggle eyes are secured very firmly, however can be removed by request. The colours are gender neutral and would make an ideal welcome gift for a new little fish. The beanie has a happy barramundi fish on the front, with plain granny type squares on the side and back. The fins and tail provide texture.

The yarn is an Australian made washable baby weight acrylic that has a pearl luster thread throughout. It is a quality yarn and is beautiful to touch. Although the yarn is machine washable, I would suggest washing by hand as these little fishies prefer a hand wash rather than a spin dry!

This is an original hand crocheted Koala beanie for a little kid with a cold head, approximate age 5 -12years

Hat measures 20in/51cm relaxed circumference, and a height of 8 in/ 20cm. The brim can be folded up to allow for head growth.

This little number is designed and handmade by me in Australia in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees. Where else would a koala hat come from? The colours are gender neutral, in bright colours of dark blue, lime, yellow, and red. This one has 4 koalas each with a different backgroundand finished with a rainbow yarn. The ears and nose provide texture and I have put a colourful tassel on the top.

Muttaburrasaurus Dinosaur Crochet Scarf - etsykids

Long before there were kangaroos down here Dinosaurs roamed Australia.

This unusual scarf for a dinosaur lover is designed by me and crocheted by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees.

Scarf measures 5in/13cm wide and 46inches or 118cm long.

The colours are: Green and Cream Muttaburrasaurus, with ribbed stripes of chocolate brown, green, cream and a variegation of these three. The colours are boyish and work well together. There has to be a little bloke out there who would love this scarf.

The yarn is an Australian made washable acrylic. While it is machine washable the dinosaur prefers to be hand washed rather than spun dry!

Muttaburrasaurus was an Australian dinosaur of the middle Cretaceous Period, about 113-97 million years ago. This was around the time that Australia started to break away from the continent Gondwana. Most of the dinosaurs of that period lived in the rainforests of what is now known as Queensland. There is a place out west called Muttaburra and this is where the first fossils were found. Muttaburra is an Indigeneous word meaning where the waters meet. Sounds like a perfect place for a dinosaur to grow up! Muttaburrasaurus was herbivorous with a long neck and tail and had a horny bump on the tip of its nose.

This is a one of a kind. I crochet for fun and hope this beanie will give someone a smile. This item is designed, and made in Australia. For overseas customers this means it may take a week or two to reach you by snail mail.

These Tasmanian Tiger slippers are designed and made by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees in Australia. Australia has some of the nastiest, ugliest spiders in the world.

This original crochet design has been inspired by the creepy crawlies that hang about dark dusty places, and scrubby bush in Australia.

The Sydney Funnel-Web Spider carry atraxotoxin, the world's most dangerous toxin to humans. The mature male funnel-web spider will wander around during hot humid nights, looking for a mate. After mating when he is totally exhausted the female bites him and sucks all the nourishment from his body leaving him an empty shell. What a tough cookie!

Spider body is 2 1/2 inches or 6cm long. She is made of Australian cotton in jet black with orange glass bead eyes.

This is a pattern to crochet frangipani flowers which can be used to make pretty summer accessories. I use the flowers for hair ties, or to jazz up accessories such as a hat or a bag. The frangipani or plumeria is a sweet smelling tropical flower and native frangipani species grow in our rainforests. The finished flowers measure about 2 1/2 inches or 6cm across, and you can experiment with different colours.

Sea Creatures from the Australian Coast- dolphins, whales, stingrays and sharks, crochet patterns bookmarks and motifs

These original crochet designs have been inspired by the creatures that I see swimming in the seas off the Coast of Queensland. Dolphins can be mistaken as sharks from a distance, but the real excitement is when there is a larger spurt and to realize there are whales. In spring the humpbacks migrate south from the Great Barrier Reef to Antarctica, and are very active off the Queensland Coast. They are a protected species and the whaling boats from other countries are not welcome here. A breeching humpback is a magnificent sight. The great white shark occasionally makes the news when he munches on a surfer. The sting ray is a bottom dweller and not often seen. They are non aggressive but reached infamy when one killed the Crocodile Hunter last year. I designed this set mid last year and it has taken me a while to bring this collection to completion.

This hat has stripes of navy blue, turquoise blues, bottle green, emerald green and a touch of yellow. It has a nice Australian Rainforest look and would make a great gift (Birthday, Christmas) for the outdoorsy type of bloke.

This is a pair of Tasmanian tiger kittens that have gone to sleep on these little baby booties. Designed and made in Australia, these booties in pink are really special. They are an ideal gift for a special baby.

Booties have a length of 12cm/4.5inches. With a height of 4cm/ 1.75 inches. This about right for an average bub from 6months. They are a low cut bootie and really sweet.

These critters are designed by me and crocheted by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees. The colours are white kittens with a faint fleck of baby colours on a baby pink bootie. Powder pink satin ribbon ties are removable. I love their little noses and wiskers.

Camp Fire Scarf - charcoal, tan and denim blue - Mens (crochet wool mix)

I have called this scarf "Camp Fire" because the colours remind of of the campfire ashes the next morning. I made this one especially for the man in your life. All of my work is designed and hand made by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees. They are all brand spanking new, worn by the model once to photograph. I don’t do markets or shows so the only hands to have touched this are mine.

It is crocheted out of one of those self striping yarns. I used a simple ridged pattern with a repeat of lattice. The colours are an interesting mix of charcoal, denim blue, and tan. This looks great with a casual jumper and a pair of jeans. The colours are gender neutral, but do look good on a man. This scarf turned out especially good as the coloured yarn provides an interesting effect. It is tuff enough for anyone who likes the great outdoors. I reckon the Man from Snowy River would have liked this one.

The scarf is made out of 75% wool and 25% nylon for easy wash and wear. It measures 5inches or 13cm wide and 63inches or 158cm long. It looks fabulous when looped and is has a no nonsense appearance.

This is a Koala scarf for a little kid with a cold neck.

Barrier Reef Blue Textured Mitts in pure Australian wool (finished crochet item)

Fingerless mitts are a great invention as you can still manage to pick shells up the sand and have toasty warm hands. These mitts measure 61/2inches / 16 cm long and have a nice degree of stretch, sized to fit small hands. They are crocheted by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees out of pure Australian wool. The colour is a beautiful cobalt blue that would look great with denims and blacks.

I have added a lattice pattern at the front which provides a nice bit of texture. I really like the look of these, and the simple design has a slightly tailored look. When I crochet I like to create pieces that are individual and a bit different.

I have used the old idea of a crochet collar and reinvented it with modern fibers and a new twist. The colour is soft purple like the blossoms of the Jacaranda tree. This is a quality velveteen yarn that is especially soft to touch.

Unstretched the neck band measures 17inches/ 44 cm, and when laid flat 5inches / 13 cm wide. It is nice a stretchy. I have used an edge reminiscent of handkerchief edges and finished it off with an unusual vintage button that has an interesting texture. Designed and made by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees out of an Australian made 65% acrylic, 34% rayon 1% lycra.

These are great for dressing up a plain winter top and do a fabulous job in keeping the neck warm. Just the thing when a scarf would seem a bit much.I have designed the collar so they can be worn in a variety of ways. Wear it folded, flat, to the side or to the back. This one would look great on a black sweater or dress. It has a velvet feel to it as well. The collar is so easy to remove if you are feeling a bit warm as you don’t have to peel off layers of clothing.

This is Fuchia. She is one of those highly satisfied cows who eats lots of grass, and moos really loud.

This is my latest design in the context of the year of the OX. She is a traditional black and white cow with ivory horns and a pink snout. The background colours are fuchia and pinks. Made in 100% Australian Acrylic in nice girly colours.

This beanie measures 44cm/17in circumference and 18cm/ 7inches high. It is nice and stretchy and will fit a little girl toddler to preschool.

This design is based on the shape of the Ulysses Butterfly which is a stunning swallowtail butterfly. In a group they are really stunning and feed on the tropical rainforest blooms. Meet Sunny the Tasmanian tiger. This beanie is perfect for a little kid with a cold head, approximate age toddler – preschool.

This little number is designed by me and crocheted by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees. The tiger is Sunny Yellow, with teal green and variegations of blue and green trim. The ears, nose and whiskers provide texture. The tiger face has a cat like appearance and the colours really pop.

The story of the Tasmanian tiger or thylacine is a sad one as they were declared extinct in 1986. The Tasmanian tiger was a marsupial dog with a pouch like a wombat, a head like a dog, and stripes and tail like a tiger. The last one died in the Hobart Zoo on the 7th of September 1936. The 7th of September is now marked as 'Threatened Species Day'.

This is an original butterfly designed and made by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees. This design is based on the Ulysses butterfly, a sparrow tail butterfly of far north Queensland in our tropical rainforest. The Ulysses Butterfly is also known as the Blue Mountain Swallowtail, the Blue Emperor, and the Mountain Blue.
It is a protected species here in Queensland, Australia.

This little lady measures 3inches or 8cm from her antenna to tail with a tassel that measures 5inches or 13cm. Imagine this pretty butterfly captured in your book!

I have tried to do this one in the colours of the Ulysses as shown in the last image. She has a pure black thorax and wing edge. The wings are symmetrical in a bright blue. Aussie Snuggly Ugg Crochet Baby Booties shades of ruby, length 10cm/4in (pure Australian wool) etsykids

These little booties measure approx 10cm/ 4inches long and 3inches/8cm high with the band folded down. Sized for a baby - 6months, and are cute little things. They are a variegated shades of ruby with a toch of grey. The booties are 100% pure Australian wool with a band of mohair/wool mix. Hand washing in warm water is recommended.

The Ugg boot is an Australian icon, and is traditionally made from 100% sheepskin and fleece. Because the real uggs are made of wool I prefer to crochet these in pure Australian wool to achieve the wooly warmth. Nothing can surpass the real thing, but these booties are a bit of fun, and are designed and made by me in my smoke free home in Australia. They are all crochet. The last picture shows my trusty uggies which I have loved every winter for about the last 25 years!I love my uggies!

Ugg boots have been around since the Second World War and were popular in the 60s and 70s for surfers. They were considered bogan until their recent raise to fame.

The Sulphur Crested Cockatoo is a remarkably beautiful Australian parrot. This little set is based on the cockatoo chickens which are the cutest little things.

Orange Eyed Frog and Tadpole scarf in Brights (etsy kids)

EEK! An orange eyed frog from high in the rainforests has landed on this scarf. A tadpole is swimming on the other end. This is what happens when you go troppo! You start crocheting all sorts of critters.

This wacky scarf for a wild child is designed by me and crocheted by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees.

The scarf is 5 inches or 13 cm wide and a nice 43 inches or 110cm long. There is a frog at one end and a tadpole at the other.

I have used a nice ribbed stitch in bands of turquoise, green, yellow, red, orange and variegated yarn. The colours really pop. It is long enough for a double wrap, or loop to show the frogs at the front. These froggy scarves are a labour of love, all made by me.

These little guys live in the rain forests of North Queensland, only coming down out of the trees to breed. They are nocturnal, so rarely seen. They have cousins in the forests of South America. As our rain forests diminish, so has the population of these little frogs. In life they are about 6.5cm and their distinctive eyes vary in colour from bright red to orange. The skin is a bright green with a yellow under belly. It is thought that the eyes are a deterrent to predators. As if a frog can be pretty these ones certainly have an interesting appearance.

Popcorn Tea Cosy and Hot Pads crochet pattern - Aussie Kitchen Kitsch

So what's kitsch about a crochet tea cosy and hot pad? I guess it is all a matter of taste, but if it is tasteless and tacky we Aussies do it with style! In which case is it then kitsch? My Nana always had a tea cosy. It was a part of growing up with the scones and jam and cream. Silly thing was she used the tea cosy to protect the Shelly Tea pot.

The reality is that tea cosies work in doing a mighty fine job of keeping the teapot toasty warm, and the hot pad or pot holder protects hands and surfaces.

This pattern set includes instructions for how to make a popcorn tea cosy and hot pad or pot holder. Patterns are emailed to you in PDF form. Instructions are provided for both a large and smaller tea pot.

Try a new age look in basic black and white, or be as vulgar as you wish with random brights. Before long you will be popcorning all over the place!

This is a great pattern to use all those scraps of 8 ply, worsted weight, double knit yarns. Patterns use a size 8 (4mm hook) and are provided in both Australian/British and American Instructions.

Crazy Casserole Pot Toppers - Crochet pattern

It is winter here in Australia and we often have casserole, soup or curries for dinner. The lids are always so hot, so I came up with a series of crochet casserole pot toppers.

This pattern set includes instructions for the following casserole and hot pot animals: Chicken, pigeon, lamb, pig, beef, rabbit and duck. There are also some additional instructions for a plain round pot topper and hot pad.

Materials required include 8ply, worsted weight yarn, and a 4mm, size 8 crochet hook.

As with all my patterns they come in a pdf file and are written in both Australian and American instructions. I have done all the hard work with the translations for you!

They are a glamourised pot holder, but have a bit of attitude. I reckon they look kinda crazy on top of the casserole dishes. These make novel gifts for kitchen teas, or keep them for your self to liven up the dinner table.

This design is inspired by the tea tree (Leptospermum) growing in my front yard. It is an Australian native plant which blossoms with tiny white or pink flowers, with a dark centre. They smell heavenly and the birds and the bees love them. Full of nectar they are the basis for Leptospermum honey. Tea tree oil, by the way doesn’t come from the tea tree but the Melaleuca, which is actually a paper bark. Not sure how the oil became mis- named.

So any thing based on a tea tree, had to be sweet.

Designed and made in Australia, these lil booties are really special. They are an ideal gift for a special baby.

Booties have a length of 3.5inch/9.5cm. With a height of 1.5inches/4cm. This about right for a newborn to 3months.

These little darlins are designed by me and crocheted by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees. The colours are lolly pink with a wooly white trim. Ribbon ties are removeable.

The yarn is an Australian made baby weight pure wool. Grown, spun and made in AUstralia. I suggest washing by hand.

Red pig beanie toddler - preschool (etsykids)

This beanie is designed by me and crocheted by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees. The colours are blood red pig, on a background of pure white highlighted with a variegation of reds. The beanie has a happy pig face on the front, and the rear end on the back. The ears, snout and tail provide texture. The side is constructed of granny type squares. The pure white really highlights the pig and is a lovely gender neutral combination. This is a part of my year of the pig celebration series. You don’t have to be born in the year of the pig to like pigs! I have been told that Akansas is also the home of the red hogs.

Hat measures approximately 18in/46cm circumference, and a height of 7in/ 18cm. This would fit a toddler to preschool age, maybe longer as the pattern has a bit of stretch in it.

The yarn is an Australian made washable 8ply/worsted weight acrylic. Although the yarn is machine washable, I would suggest washing by hand. This is a one of a kind set. I crochet for fun and hope this beanie will give someone a smile.

Pigs have a bad reputation in Australia. They were introduced in the 1770’s, as domesticated farm animals as a food source for the new colony and soon became feral. The feral pig has a huge impact on the Australian environment and is considered one of Australia’s worst pests as they erode the soil and waterways kill farmed animals, eat small mammals, frogs, ground-nesting birds, lizards and eggs. When they wallow in the billabongs and creeks they destroy the water vegetation and disturb the ecosystem. The best place for a pig is on a beanie as they can cause no harm here!

This is an original hand crocheted Northern Territory Crocodile designed and made by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees. This bloke measures 6inches/15cm from head to tail with a tassel that measures 7inches/18cm. Imagine a croc squished in your book! If you have one of those ratbag kids who you are trying to encourage to read, then this is just the thing. I have also given them to the elderly uncles who are avid readers and they love them to bits. Little boys and older men are often tricky to buy something unique for and this guy would make a great Christmas or birthday gift. Pop him in a card for an interesting surprise!

He is a nice rusty ochre colour. These are the guys that Steve Irwin used to wrestle. Made out of an Aistralian grown and spun cotton he is really unique. Australia has some most wonderful reptiles. The eyes and nostrils are beads that are worked into the design. I dab my work with eucalyptus oil which gives the smell of the Australian Bush. This also helps to keep the silverfish out of your book and gives a fresh aroma.

This is a selection of my smaller motifs that are fabulous when used as hair accessories.

This is a set of three motifs in a beach theme: a little sweetlip fish, the Australian seahorse and a turtle hatchling.

Instructions are provided in Australian/English and American terms and will be emailed in pdf format.

Materials used include 4ply/ 10 crochet cotton with a 1.75 (5 steel) hook, beads for eyes, bobby pins and barrettes (5cm/2inches).

Make your own novel hair accessories and gifts. These look great as a mixed set, singles or pairs. Use as motifs, or add a tassel to make a book mark.

Little fish measure 4cm or 1 1/2 inch from lip to tail.
Seahorse is 7cm or 2/12 inches long.
Hatchling turtle measures 7cm or 2 3/4inches from tail to nose.

The fish is based on the sweetlip which is one of those fish with what I call "kissy lips". They are reminiscent of the little fish that get stranded in the rock pools when the waves wash up. The Australian Short neck turtle lives in the creeks and waterways and the sea horse is from the Great Barrier Reef.

This is an original hand crocheted Barramundi Fish beanie with matching mittens for for a little kid, approximate age 2 - 5years. Hand crocheted and designed by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees these are based on the barramundi fish.

The barramundi is the most delicious fish and is found in our freshwater streams of Northern and Coastal Australia. Barramundi is an aboriginal word meaning large scaly fish. While they are native to Australia they are farmed fish in other parts of the world.

Hat measures 18 in/46 cm relaxed circumferance, and a height of 7 in / 18cm. The brim can be folded up to allow for head growth and crochet is always nice and stretchy.

The mittens are an open stitch so while providing some warmth may need under mitts if you live in the real cold. (It is stinking hot down here so mittens arent really a big deal.) Palm circumferance = 6inches/ 15cm with a wrist to finger tip of 6inches/15cm.
The colours are gender neutral, in shades of blues with a yellow fish however I think a young boy would love this set. There is one barramundi fish on the front and granny type squares on the side and back of the beanie. The fins and tail provide texture and I have added a colourful tassel on the top. The goggle eye finishes him off. The mitts are baby fish and have a stretchy tie.

The yarn is an Australian made washable worsted weight acrylic. Although the yarn is machine washable, I would suggest washing by hand.

Aussie Snuggly Ugg Crochet Baby High Booties in Merlot, length 10cm/4in (pure Australian wool) etsykids

The Ugg boot is an Australian icon, and is traditionally made from 100% sheepskin and fleece.

These little booties measure approx 10cm/4inches long and 4inches/10cm high with the band folded down. Sized for a baby newborn,3 - 6months but with extra leg length for additional warmth. They are a deep Merlot burgandy color with a cherry red trim and sole. (For a good Merlot, try Jacobs Creek) The booties are 100% pure Australian wool with a band of mohair/wool mix. This is a top quality Herdwick wool grown and spun here in Australia. It has natural flecks of grey in the yarn. Hand washing in warm water is recommended.

Because the real uggs are made of wool I prefer to crochet these in pure Australian wool to achieve the wooly warmth. Nothing can surpass the real thing, but these booties are a bit of fun, and are designed and made by me in my smoke free home in Australia. They are all crochet. The last picture shows my trusty uggies which I have loved every winter for about the last 25 years!I love my uggies!

Ugg boots have been around since the Second World War and were popular in the 60s and 70s for surfers. They were considered bogan until their recent raise to fame.

Koalas are incredibly cute and cuddly and these booties are perfect bush babies and little kids. The nose and ears give a textured effect. The koala is a marsupial with a pouch and absolutely not a bear. One reason Koalas don't do well outside Australia is they eat mountains of gum leaves. They are true vegetarians and quite fussy eaters. Eucalyptus leaves are very fibrous and low in nutrition. Koalas have a very slow metabolic rate which helps them maximise the nutrition from the leaves. They have a tough life and sleep for up to 18 hours per day in order to conserve energy. My teenage son is a bit like this!

This is an original crochet butterfly designed and made by me in my smoke free home amongst the gumtrees. This design is based on the Birdwing Butterfly of Cairns in our tropical rainforest. This little lady measures 3inches or 8cm from her antenna to tail with a tassel that measures 7inches or 19cm. Imagine this pretty butterfly captured in your book!

She has a soft sage green body with wings of variegated pastels. Made out of an Australian made cotton she is really unique. Her eyes are green beads that are worked into the design and I have edged her wings in a pretty apricot colour. I dab my work with eucalyptus oil which gives the smell of the Australian Bush. This also helps to keep the silverfish out of your book and gives a fresh aroma.

These make great little gifts to pop in a card. Perfect for a friends birthday, Grandma, or Mothers Day. I have also included these in thank you cards, get well and bereavement cards. They have been very much appreciated in the latter where it is often hard to know what to say. Butterflies have long been associated with spiritual freedom, new beginnings and transformation

The Cairns Birdwing is the largest butterfly in Australia with a wingspan of over 16 cm (6 ½ inches). The upper wings of the males are black with emerald green steaks across the length of the pointed wing. Both sexes have yellow bodies with a bright red thorax. I have included a picture of a real one that I photographed in the butterfly house at Melbourne Zoo earlier this year. They are spectactular.

The story of the Tasmanian tiger or thylacine is a sad one as they were declared extinct in 1986. The Tasmanian tiger was a marsupial dog with a pouch like a wombat, a head like a dog, and stripes and tail like a tiger. The last known thylacine was captured in 1933 and died in 1936. Their demise was accompanied by European settlement and the introduction of sheep to Australia. As a carnivorous animal they were captured and killed by the farmers. The government at the time placed a bounty on the slaughter of the thylacine. They became rare and in the early 1900s were purchased by zoos around the world. The last one died in the Hobart Zoo on the 7th of September 1936. The 7th of September is now marked as 'Threatened Species Day'.

The reality is that tea cosies work in doing a mighty fine job of keeping the teapot toasty warm!

Long before there were kangaroos down here Dinosaurs roamed Australia.

This colourful hat for a dinosaur lover is designed by me and crocheted by me in my smoke free home amongst the gum trees.

Hat measures 19in/48cm relaxed circumference, and a height of 7 ½ inches or 19cm. This about right for a kid age toddler to preschool, maybe longer as it has a bit of stretch. There is one critter on the front and 3 granny type squares on the side and back.

The colours are: Green Muttaburrasaurus, with light blue, royal blue and variegations of green and blue. The colours are boyish and work well together. There has to be a little bloke out there who would love this hat. There is nothing girly about this little number. If you thought boys stuff was boring, and a crochet hat for a boy out of the question, then check this one out!

Muttaburrasaurus was an Australian dinosaur of the middle Cretaceous Period, about 113-97 million years ago. This was around the time that Australia started to break away from the continent Gondwana. Most of the dinosaurs of that period lived in the rainforests of what is now known as Queensland. There is a place out west called Muttaburra and this is where the first fossils were found. Muttaburra is an Indigeneous word meaning where the waters meet. Sounds like a perfect place for a dinosaur to grow up! Muttaburrasaurus was herbivorous with a long neck and tail and had a horny bump on the tip of its nose.

The year 2008 is the year of the brown earth rat. According to Chinese astrology, a child born in the year of the Rat will be sweet and loving. He may be shy, but inwardly he is fiercely competitive.

This is the 12th square in my rugalugs series. I have designed this one for babies gear as well as for bigger kids who like rats. When using 8 ply yarn, worsted weight, or double knit yarn - size 8 (4mm) hook the square measures approximately 11cm/ 4 ¼ inches. Worked in 4 ply or baby yarn and a 3.5mm hook the square measures approximately 9cm/3 ½ inches

This package includes patterns for a rat motif, and a contrast plain granny square. Instructions are provided for using you motif and squares to make a baby hat/beanie and a pair of ratty booties. The rat tail provides novelty to the top of the beanie. The motif can be used alone on clothing. and the square has a myriad of uses. I have designed this consistent with my other rugalugs squares.

About the Rat Kangaroo
The rat kangaroo looks like a huge rat, with long hind legs, hind feet lacking a first toe, and a long and tapering tail. Rat kangaroos are about 20inches/ 50cm long.
Some species of rat kangaroo are now extinct in parts of Australia. The non-indigenous fox and rabbit are partly responsible, as is settlement and land degradation. Rat kangaroos are an endangered species.

Tasmanian Tiger Square rugalugs crochet pattern

This pattern gives crochet instructions for an original Tasmanian Tiger or cat face and tail squares, including a plain granny that allows you to mix and match in two sizes. The ears and nose give a textured effect. You can try different colours to achieve tigers, tabbies, kitties and different feline friends. As with all my patterns, instructions are provided in Australian/English and American terms. There are 2 square sizes (small and large), and the exact size will depend on your yarn and tension. This pattern has lots of uses only limited by your imagination. These would be great as an afghan or as feature squares in accessories.

•Small square measures approximately 9cm /3 ½ inches when using 4ply, baby weight yarn, hook size 3.5mm, E4

•Large square measures approximately 13cm/ 5inches when using 8 ply yarn, worsted weight, or double knit yarn, hook size 4mm, J6

The story of the Tasmanian tiger or thylacine is a sad one as they were declared extinct in 1986. The Tasmanian tiger was a marsupial dog with a pouch like a wombat, a head like a dog, and stripes and tail like a tiger. The last known thylacine was captured in 1933 and died in 1936. Their demise was accompanied by European settlement and the introduction of sheep to Australia. As a carnivorous animal they were captured and killed by the farmers. The government at the time placed a bounty on the slaughter of the thylacine. They became rare and in the early 1900s were purchased by zoos around the world. The last one died in the Hobart Zoo on the 7th of September 1936. The 7th of September is now marked as 'Threatened Species Day'.

Emu Chicks and Egg Shell - crochet pattern

Meet the Orphan Emu chicks. They have just cracked out of their shells to explore the great outdoors.

An Emu is a flightless bird that are native to Australia. The egg shells are a distinctive grey blue and are often prized as carved eggs. Real emu eggs are about 15cm or 6inches long. Emus can be farmed as the oil is used in toiletries.

This pattern set includes full instructions for making a crocheted Emu Chick and egg shell which can be filled with Easter goodies. How about a different sort of Easter chick? Why should the chickens have all the attention? The emu is worked in 8ply, double knit or worsted weight yarn using a 4mm hook. Emu can also sit in her shell, and is 6inches or 15cm tall. I just love these guys as they are a bit quirky.
