To make one of these pieces, the face is sanded off on one side of a coin (except for those pieces with the coin image on both sides). Then using traditional hammering and forging techniques, the shape is formed, the designs are implanted, and the piece is domed with a block and punches. Due to the substantial weight of the coins, there is quite a bit of labor involved. The piece is polished by hand and cast, using the lost wax method.
