She wrote novels, monographs on philosophy, politics, and social issues, essays, biographies, and an autobiography in several volumes. She is now best known for her 1949 treatise “The Second Sex”, a detailed analysis of women&amp;#39;s oppression and a foundational tract of contemporary feminism. Simone was always aware that her father had wanted a son, instead of two daughters. He told Simone, &amp;quot;You have the brain of a man,&amp;quot; and from a young age Simone was a distinguished student. She was especially attracted to philosophy, which she went on to study at the University of Paris. There she met many other young intellectuals, including Jean-Paul Sartre whom she would have a lifelong relationship with. In 1929, at the age of 21, Beauvoir became the youngest person ever to obtain the agrégation in philosophy. On the final examination she received second place, the jury argued and gave first to Satre. In the chapter &amp;quot;Woman: Myth and Reality&amp;quot; of The Second Sex, Beauvoir argued that men had made women the &amp;quot;Other&amp;quot; in society by putting a false aura of &amp;quot;mystery&amp;quot; around them. She argued that men used this as an excuse not to understand women or their problems and not to help them, and that this stereotyping was always done in societies by the group higher in the hierarchy to the lower group. She wrote that this also happened on the basis of other categories of identity, such as race, class, and religion. But she said that it was nowhere more true than with sex, how men stereotyped women and used it as an excuse to organize society into a patriarchy.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;::DETAILS::&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is not silk screened. Kochiyama was born Mary Nakahara in San Pedro, California. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Kochiyama&amp;#39;s father was imprisoned the same day. Her family, sent to a camp in Jerome, Arkansas, were among the 120,000 Japanese-Americans interned during the Second World War. In 1960, Kochiyama and her husband Bill moved to Harlem, New York City. She became acquainted with Malcolm X and became a member of his Organization of Afro-American Unity, following his departure from the Nation of Islam. She was present at his assassination on February 21, 1965 at the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem, and held him in her arms as he lay dying. In 1977, Kochiyama joined the group of Puerto Ricans that took over the Statue of Liberty to draw attention to the struggle for Puerto Rican independence. Over the years, Kochiyama has dedicated herself to various causes, such as the rights of political prisoners, freeing Mumia Abu-Jamal, nuclear disarmament, and reparations to Japanese Americans who were interned during the war. Along with Anne Sexton, Plath is credited with advancing the genre of confessional poetry initiated by Robert Lowell and W. D. Snodgrass.  Born to middle class parents in Jamaica Plain, MA, Sylvia Plath published her first poem when she was eight. She was, on the surface, a model daughter, popular in school, earning straight A&amp;#39;s. By the time she entered Smith College on a scholarship in 1950 she already had an impressive list of publications, and while at Smith she wrote over four hundred poems.  Sylvia&amp;#39;s surface perfection was however underlain by grave personal discontinuities. During the summer following her junior year at Smith, having returned from a stay in NYC where she had been a student ``guest editor&amp;#39;&amp;#39; at Mademoiselle Magazine, Sylvia nearly succeeded in killing herself by swallowing sleeping pills. She later described this experience in an autobiographical novel, The Bell Jar, published in 1963, under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas. After a period of recovery involving electroshock and psychotherapy Sylvia graduated from Smith summa cum laude in 1955 and won a Fulbright scholarship to study at Cambridge, England.  In 1956 she married the English poet Ted Hughes , and in 1960, when she was 28, her first book, The Colossus, was published in England.  Less than two years after the birth of their first child, Ted had an affair with Assia Wevill, and their marriage ended shortly after.  During the winter of 62-63, one of the coldest in centuries,Sylvia was living in a small London flat, with two children, ill with flu and low on money. The hardness of her life seemed to increase her need to write.  On Feb 11, 1963, Sylvia Plath killed herself with cooking gas at the age of 30.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;::DETAILS::&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is not silk screened. In 1912, Alice Paul and Lucy Burns formed the Congressional Union for Women Suffrage. Their focus was lobbying for a constitutional amendment to secure the right to vote for women. When their lobbying efforts proved fruitless, Paul and her colleagues formed the National Woman&amp;#39;s Party (NWP) in 1916 and began using tactics such as demonstrations, parades, mass meetings, picketing, suffrage watch, fires, and hunger strikes. These actions were accompanied by press coverage and the publication of the weekly Suffragist. In January 1917, the NWP staged the first political protest to picket the White House. The picketers, known as &amp;quot;Silent Sentinels,&amp;quot; held banners demanding the right to vote. In July 1917, picketers were arrested on charges of &amp;quot;obstructing traffic.&amp;quot; Many, including Paul, were convicted and incarcerated. In a protest of the conditions in the jail, Paul commenced a hunger strike. This led to her being moved to the prison’s psychiatric ward and force-fed raw eggs through a plastic tube. Other women joined the strike which, combined with the continuing demonstrations and attendant press coverage, kept the pressure on the Wilson administration. In January, 1918, he announced that women&amp;#39;s suffrage was urgently needed as a &amp;quot;war measure.&amp;quot; Wilson strongly urged Congress to pass the legislation. In the early- to mid-1990s she was the lead singer of the punk band Bikini Kill, before fronting the dance-punk band Le Tigre in the late &amp;#39;90s and early 2000s. In 1998, Hanna released a solo album, Julie Ruin. Hanna first became interested in feminism around the age of nine, after her mother took her to a rally in Washington D.C. where feminist icon Gloria Steinem spoke. She attended The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington in the late 1980s studying photography. She began doing spoken word performances that addressed sexism and violence against women, issues with which she became concerned after volunteering for a domestic violence organization over the next two years. Hanna began collaborating with fellow Evergreen student and punk zinester Tobi Vail collaborating on zines, one being titled Bikini Kill, a response to sexism in the punk rock scene, written with fellow Evergreen student and friend Kathi Wilcox. The three women decided to form a band to personify their ideals and recruited Vail’s bandmate Karren as the 4th member, naming the band after their zine. Bikini Kill soon became part of the seminal Olympia, Washington music scene of the early 1990’s, which was characterized by political awareness. In 1998 Hanna joined her friend Johanna Fateman on the East Coast, and with filmmaker Sadie Benning, they started another band called Le Tigre. This band continued to pursue an electronic style of music similar to the sampler-driven sound Hanna had begun to explore with Julie Ruin. Le Tigre is currently on hiatus. During her time off from the band Hanna has been volunteering as a band coach for &amp;quot;The Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls&amp;quot; Hanna is married to Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys. Kochiyama was born Mary Nakahara in San Pedro, California. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Kochiyama&amp;#39;s father was imprisoned the same day. Her family, sent to a camp in Jerome, Arkansas, were among the 120,000 Japanese-Americans interned during the Second World War. In 1960, Kochiyama and her husband Bill moved to Harlem, New York City.
