Free-standing paper sculpture of my Cheeky Cockatoos.
I used old manuscript paper for the boat (a common feature in my work, if you didn't notice), and Japanese origami handmade paper for the cockatoos, painted in gouache. The paper has a watermarked / embossed pattern in it a bit like snowflakes.

I tend to leave my boats free standing as sculptures, but it is possible to hang or glue to a backing board and frame.

Size: 25cm long, 16cm high & 10cm deep.
10.5" long, 6.5" high & 4.5" deep.

Signed and stamped by me, the artist.

Le Mat Multi Plate Colour Photographic Etching by Emma Kidd / The Magic Flute / Le Flute Enchantee

This is one of five photographic etchings done in the summer of 2006 inspired by "The Magic Flute" and its symbolism.

This image was image One: Le Mat
So this is "The Fool" : Papageno represents this card, you have his birds and his glockenspiel. All on tarot cards.

How this image is made:
I scan the finished image or use a photograph or some image I have created, I break it down into the four process colours: cyan, magenta, yellow, black. I output a form of negative depending on how big I want the image.
I degrease four metal plates (these ones were brass), coat them with a light sensitive (photographic) fluid and expose with a UV light. I then use another product to develop the plate.
After, it is etching with "acid" (a salt normally), sometimes adding a bit more texture with a spray can, if the areas of colour or black are too "open" (to give it some more tooth, so to speak, to catch the ink, making the colour richer).
Then, once all the plates are etched, you clean them, register the four plates so they line up. This part is very important.
Put the paper in the water, ink the plates (this part can last upto one hour, sometimes more)... print (with hope that you registered the plates well).

This is a one off etching created using the chine collé method (meaning you print onto a piece of rice paper rolled through on top of the etching paper. You then glue the rice paper to the paper). I created this unique state in 1996. I recently rediscovered it amongst my other etchings. I remember I hand dyed the rice paper and the ink used for the eyes is a deep burgundy.

This is the only print of this image.

Le Monde Multi Plate Colour Photographic Etching by Emma Kidd / The Magic Flute / Le Flute Enchantee

This is one of five photographic etchings done in the summer of 2006 inspired by "The Magic Flute" and its symbolism.

This image was image Five: Le Monde / Le Jugement
I think this is my favourite. We have Pamina in the center and the other four images around represent the four elements, but they represent four main characters and forces of "La Flûte Enchantée".
Le Jugement (Judgement) has the 77 strokes for getting into the (Masonic) temple.

How this image is made:
I scan the finished image or use a photograph or some image I have created, I break it down into the four process colours: cyan, magenta, yellow, black. I output a form of negative depending on how big I want the image.
I degrease four metal plates (these ones were brass), coat them with a light sensitive (photographic) fluid and expose with a UV light. I then use another product to develop the plate.
After, it is etching with "acid" (a salt normally), sometimes adding a bit more texture with a spray can, if the areas of colour or black are too "open" (to give it some more tooth, so to speak, to catch the ink, making the colour richer).
Then, once all the plates are etched, you clean them, register the four plates so they line up. This part is very important.
Put the paper in the water, ink the plates (this part can last upto one hour, sometimes more)... print (with hope that you registered the plates well).
