Antler Basket - Ribbed Appalachian Style

$150.00
Antler baskets are woven intuitively - I don't know the exact form it will take when I start, but I know it will be large and great looking and that it will take me around 10 hours to complete. I give them a thick rim with extra stout reinforcement at the rim - these antlers are 4-5 times heavier than the actual basket.

Ribs are added all over the place - giving the basket very firm structure. Once the basket is done, it has to be decided how to keep it from falling over by the weight of the antlers - for this basket, wooden rings have been tied on after wrapping them with suede. They look like feet - adding a touch of whimsy and they allow the basket to sit well.

Reed is used for the basket and cane for the lashings. This one is woven in natural reed and a generous helping of space-dyed reed in Burgundy, gold and green.

Measurements are estimated:
Height (including handle) - 16"
Width - 16"
Length - 21"

Note - I use only naturally shed antlers, gathered legally in Oregon.

Large TOTE Basket with Cotton Strapping

$48.00
Width - Top - 8 x 12.5
Bottom - 5.5 x 13
Height - 9.25"

Height of strap from top of basket to top of strap - 15.25"

Large tote to haul your gear in style. Pack it full of books, lunch, a change of clothes, and your little dog,too...

Woven in natural reed with dyed reed accent in black and red. A piece of seagrass garnishes the rim to hide the works below. Tightly lashed with narrow cane binding.

Straps are cotton webbing - thick and sturdy. They run in a continuous loop down the basket and across the bottom, so they brace the whole load in the basket and look gorgeous while doing so...

Bottom of the basket is woven closed to protect your belongings. Keep your basket clean by removing dirt and dust whenever it appears. This will extend the life of your basket, which is already expected to be quite long.

Onion Storage - Dark Brown Small to Medium with Leaves all Around

$25.00
Dark Brown is back! This listing is for the smaller onion baskets in dark brown, garnished with leaves all the way around the top. Now, with the dark brown rush, I can make them with the big tough leaves again.

This basket was originally inspired by a custom order for a customer who wanted to keep a smaller amount of onions on hand and have room to toss in some garlic as well. It turned out so well that I kept selling my prototypes to other customers. By the time the original customer arrived to pick up her basket, it had become a regular item. These baskets hold about 7 or 8 average sized onions and you can throw in some garlic and shallots.

This basket is also woven in a twine weave, using the tough fiber rush material from the larger version. It is about half the volume of the larger basket. The opening is much wider and the sides straight up and down without the kidney shape of the larger basket. The handle is bound with the smallest size rush for well finished, durable handles.

The bottoms of these baskets are actually flat, or close enough that they will sit when full of onions. They do better with air circulating all around, but since this is a smaller basket, it is less likely that your onions will go bad if you choose not to hang it up.

Specific measurements vary, and currently, the leafy ones are shorter and wider than the others - about 8 inches across the top and bottom and is about 3.5 to 4 inches tall. There is approximately the same volume in all of these baskets, but there is some variety in the actual dimensions.

Garlic Baskets Storage Baskets Light Brown

$12.00
Garlic baskets are approximately 6" high and 5" across, with a 4" opening. Variations are due to handcrafting. Garlic is easily dropped in and retrieved.
* Loosely woven in an open twined pattern, to allow air to circulate around produce.
* The material is called "fibre rush", a tightly twisted brown paper product, intended for use in woven chair seats. I've found it to be amazingly durable and have had the same garlic basket hanging in my kitchen since 2001.
* It's best not to immerse them in water, but they can be spot cleaned, dusted, and quickly brushed with a slightly damp sponge, then air dried.

Handles are bound to avoid twisting. Currently these garlic baskets are plain and beadless, but can be produced with a leafy, beaded garnish at your request. These are just the light brown garlic holders. Dark brown is currently unavailable for garlic.

Each garlic basket is different in subtle ways , but generally, they have a bulb shape and are fairly standard in size now. Satisfaction is guaranteed.

Dark Brown Large Twined Baskets for Onion Storage

$27.00
10-12" high plus 4.5" for the handle (handles vary somewhat in height)
9" wide tapering to a 5-6" opening

You can put Walla Wallas in here or just fill it with your favorite onions or even potatoes. Use your imagination - fill it with oranges or get one with a wide opening and use it for newborn photography.

As in our other onion baskets, the material is called "fibre rush" - essentially a tightly twisted brown paper. I've found it to be amazingly durable and have had garlic and onion baskets, woven from fiber rush, hanging in my kitchen since 1997. I still have a few of the light brown onion baskets, but this is for the newly restocked dark brown, plain without leaves.

* It's best not to immerse these in water, but they can be spot cleaned, dusted, and quickly brushed with a slightly damp sponge, then air dried. A friend has a set of these for onion and garlic and they've hung in his kitchen since 2001, with no problems.

Handles are bound to avoid twisting. These heavy-duty handles should help to extend the life of the basket. Current stock is mostly plain, without beads, but if you would like one with a little leaf and bead garnish, just ask and I'll see what I can do.

Each onion basket is different in subtle ways , but generally, they have a bulbous/baglike shape and are fairly standard in size now. Satisfaction is guaranteed.

Ribbed Basket SGM8 LARGE Appalachian Basket in Seagrass

$48.00
Opening - 10 x 11 inches
Base - approx. 13 x 14 inches
Total Height - 11.5 inches

The handle part of the twisted frame here is made out of "Datu", a type of reed that still has the skin on and is a golden, light brown. It has a stunning contrast next to just about anything that is woven into a basket. The god's-eye lashings are tightly wrapped in cane - the tough outer skin of the same reed that is used for the ribs. The shiny, smooth skin is a lovely contrast against the rustic seagrass used in the body of the basket. The weaving starts off with an inch of contrasting dyed reed in a space-dyed combination called "Victorian" (wine, green, gold), before giving way to the seagrass for the rest of the weaving. Seagrass is imported, but very much like grass I have harvested on the beach in Manzanita OR.

Very sturdy - with 24 ribs, between the frame, this basket is large and has a pleasing shape that sits almost flat - a modest and classic "egg" basket. This style evolved from it's function as a service basket - hauling goods to and from the farm (handy at the market). The haunches sit well on a hip when it is full. This one sits well on your counter or display shelf or you could hang it from the ceiling as part of a collection. It could hold your knitting or...?

This one is large and the handle and frame have been built up with extra reed to give it strength and longevity. Take good care and it will be an heirloom.

What's the big deal with ribs and why does it matter how many are worked into a basket? Well, the ribs give the Appalachian style basket its structure. I struggle with my students every summer when they want to limit their basket to as few ribs as possible. It takes some patience and determination to learn to add ribs, although it is accomplished easily enough with enough patience and determination. Kids tend to want instant gratification and want their baskets woven in a hurry. I tell them they can rush through their basket, and still take it home to show off with pride, but if it doesn't have enough ribs, it's not going to last long and will not be heirloom quality. Some of my larger baskets have 24 or more ribs.
Condiment Baskets - Salt and Pepper

The shakers are replicas of classic Mason Ball jars that stand 2.75 inches tall and have a 1.25 inch footprint each. The baskets are about 2.25 inches tall and 2.5 x 4 inches at the top opening and are about 2x3 at the base on the outside - narrower on the inside to hug the contents. With the handle, it stands barely 5" tall. The shakers nestle comfortably in the basket and have a woven-in separator to keep them in the basket (except for the one that wove up so snug that it needed no separator).

Classic wire bail handle has a comfortable unfinished wooden grip at the top. Baskets are a handwoven miniature with a couple rows of colorful reed added near the top. Colors vary - midnight blues (range of blues), country garden (blues, purple, green - although I can't guarantee that this small amount of reed used will have all the colors)and Earth tones. You can choose or be surprised.

The handle is a convenient feature for carrying room-to-room or counter-to-table - my own set ends up all over the house.

It is about half the volume of the larger basket. The opening is much wider. The handle is a twisted version using slightly smaller rush and bound with the smallest size rush for well finished, durable handles. This listing is for the light brown fiber rush.

The bottoms of these baskets are not flat, but if you fill them with onions, they will sit on a counter. They do better with air circulating all around, but since this is a smaller basket, it is less likely that your onions will go bad.

Remember that this basket (or any basket, really) should never sit in water. It can be cleaned/dusted with a slightly damp sponge, but should hang to dry.

Currently, these baskets are woven from the lighter shade of Kraft brown fiber rush. The dark brown rush may be restocked over the next month, unless my supplier is out of that fiber.

Height - 6-7"
Width - 7-8"

Ribbed Basket SGM7 Medium Sized Appalachian Basket in Seagrass

$30.00
Opening - 7" x 8"
Base - about 10"
Total Height - 8.5

Very sturdy - with 14 ribs, between the frame, this basket has a pleasing shape that sits on its "haunches" - a modest and classic "fanny" basket. This style evolved from it's function as a service basket - hauling goods to and from the farm (handy at the market). The haunches sit well on a hip when it full. Sits well on your counter or display shelf or you could hang it from the ceiling as part of a collection. Will make a beautiful basket for bread or rolls at a holiday table.

Variations are due to handcrafting. They are a nice rounded shape with plenty of room for the garlic to plop in and room for 2-4 bulbs, depending on bulb size. They have been developed to a fine, functional and beautiful utility basket.

Features of this reed garlic basket:
* Woven with natural smoked reed - a warm dark brown
* Loosely woven in reed in an open twined pattern, to allow air to circulate around produce.
* Sturdy fiber rush handle with bindings for extended use.
* These are easily cleaned with a dip in water, soap when necessary, rinse, then air dry. Avoid a harsh exposure to sunlight.

Each garlic basket is different in subtle ways and may not exactly look like the picture (some have a shorter collar at the neck, handles vary in length and overall shape varies from basket to basket. It has been finished with beeswax feeder finish and can be kept in condition with an occasional treatment of feeder finish or any kind of wood cleaner that will feed and maintain the finish.

Use your imagination - fill it with oranges or request one with a wide opening and use it for newborn photography.

As in our other onion baskets, the material is called "fibre rush" - essentially a tightly twisted brown paper. I've found it to be amazingly durable and have had garlic and onion baskets, woven from fiber rush, hanging in my kitchen since 1997. I still have a few of the light brown onion baskets in stock, but this is for the newly restocked dark brown, in the almost plain version - with a leafy garnish all the way around the opening. The leaves are individually cut and trimmed.

* It's best not to immerse these in water, but they can be spot cleaned, dusted, and quickly brushed with a slightly damp sponge, then air dried. A friend has a set of these for onion and garlic and they've hung in his kitchen since 2001, with no problems. So, it's not just happening in my kitchen. Even a guy, a notorious slob, btw, can hang up an onion basket and enjoy it for years.

Handles are bound with a smaller grade of fiber rush to avoid twisting. These heavy-duty handles should help to extend the life of the basket.

Each onion basket is different in subtle ways , but generally, they have a bulbous/baglike shape and are fairly standard in size now. If you need more baskets than I have listed on this ad, just email your needs and I will post more. Satisfaction is guaranteed.

There are still about 6 of these lighter brown baskets. When they're gone, we'll be back to just the dark brown.

* It's best not to immerse these in water, but they can be spot cleaned, dusted, and quickly brushed with a slightly damp sponge, then air dried. Variations are due to handcrafting. Garlic is easily dropped in and retrieved. Hang on a cuphook under your cupboard near your cutting board. These are similar to my fiber rush garlic baskets, but have no beads or leafy decorations. You might choose this model if you want a more robust and unadorned basket for your kitchen.

* Loosely woven in an open twined pattern, to allow air to
circulate around produce.
* Material is natural basket reed imported from Asia, easily cleaned in water and air dried. This reed is heavier and thicker than my other reed garlic baskets.
*Handles are twisted fiber rush, because it has proven to be far more durable for handles under stress.

Each garlic basket is different in subtle ways , but generally, they have a bulb shape and are fairly standard in size now. Picture shows the bulb shape and another shape that is flat on the bottom for sitting on the counter instead of hanging under the cupboard.

US shipping is by Priority Mail.
Dark Brown Onion Storage Basket With Garnish - Small for Average Onion Consumers - Add garlic and shallots...yumm

$22.00
Dark Brown is back! This listing is for the smaller onion baskets in dark brown, garnished with 2 or 3 leaves, with or without beads (you may specify). You could specifically ask for a particular number of leaves, but I sort of create them intuitively, each basket being a bit different from the others. Some have 2 leaves, some 3 and some have an additional pair or two of tiny leaves emerging from the beads.

This basket was inspired by a custom order for a customer who wanted to keep a smaller amount of onions on hand and have room to toss in some garlic as well. It turned out so well that I kept selling my prototypes to other customers. By the time the original customer arrived to pick up her basket, it had become a regular item. These baskets hold about 7 or 8 average sized onions and you can throw in some garlic and shallots.

This one is also woven in a twine weave, using the tough fiber rush material from the larger version.

Specific measurements vary, but this basket is about 6-7" across the top and bottom and is about 4 or 5 inches tall. There is approximately the same volume in all of these baskets, but there is some variety in the actual dimensions.

There is approximately the same volume in all of these baskets, but there is some variety in the actual dimensions.

$36.00
Base width - 10.5 inches
Opening width - 7.25 x 8
Total Height - approx. 9"

The handle part of the twisted frame on this medium sized basket is made out of "Datu", a type of reed that still has the skin on and is a golden, light brown. The weaving starts off with approximately an inch of earthtoned reed (green, brown, gold), before giving way to the seagrass. Seagrass is imported, but very much like grass I have harvested on the beach in Manzanita OR.

Very sturdy - with 18 ribs, between the frame, this basket has a pleasing shape that sits on its "haunches" - this one is a classic "fanny" basket with each side being a distinctive "cheek". This style evolved from it's function as a service basket - hauling goods to and from the farm (handy at the market). The haunches sit well on a hip when it is full. This basket sits well on your counter or display shelf or you could hang it from the ceiling as part of a collection.

This basket is a classic in style, beautiful in form and should prove to be an heirloom.

Seagrass is imported, but very much like grass I have harvested on the beach in Manzanita OR.

Very sturdy - with 18 ribs, between the frame, this basket has a pleasant flat shape shape that sits well - a modest and classic "fanny" basket - more like what is known as an "egg" basket. The basket is big enough to hold outgoing mail, your wallet or items you need to remember to take when you leave the house. The handle is a thick and strong oak hook, anchored down in 2 places in the back.

Basket is woven in light smoked brown reed with a 3 row accent of reed dyed a light rust tone. The oval rim at the top provides a nice-looking finish and a heavy anchor for the handle - a thick piece of seagrass fills the border and the rim is a dark smoke brown, lashed with narrow natural cane. The bottom is an open weave to allow circulation and help prevent a gathering of debris.

The oak handle is finished with beeswax feeder finish for excellent protection from moisture, dust and children's fingers.
This one is a small to medium size that would serve well on a counter holding kitchen tools or art supplies, on a shelf holding a small knitting project or ....you'll find a use for it very soon. It has a tightly woven bottom that won't withstand long-term storage of soft fruit (if you let the fruit languish until it is inedible it rots the basket reed), but if your family is good about eating their vitamin C, this basket will look very cute filled with apples and oranges.

Woven in a light brown smoked reed with accent reed in dark smoked brown and a rich space-dyed earth tone reed (brown/green/gold). Several sizes of reed are used for a pleasing combination in the weave. A thick strand of seagrass fills the rim which is lashed with a narrow dark smoked reed.
