Petit Twisted Fleur de Lis Pendant, Stainless Steel

Due to numerous requests, a smaller version of the twisted fleur de lis pendant has just been introduced.

The fleur de lis has long been a symbol of French heritage of Louisiana and New Orleans and in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, this symbol has also come to represent the rebirth of the area. You now have a chance to own or give a unique piece of stainless steel jewelry.

Stainless steel Fleur de lis Pendant, 1-5/8" tall x 1-3/8" wide x the thickness of a US quarter.

This stainless steel fleur de lis pendant was hand hammered on an anvil in Denver, CO by former Slidellian, John Doherty. He learned metal working the hard way at Southern Shipbuilding in Slidell, LA. The hammering has created a subtle texture unlike that found on mass produced items. This high quality pendant with a polished stainless steel finish should last many lifetimes. The stainless steel has a natural finish and there is no plating to wear off. The fleur de lis pendant includes an 18" satin, rubber or leather cord.

Hurricane Katrina devastated much of John's hometown and this prompted him to created and sell several fleur de lis sculptures to raise funds for high school classmates that were storm victims. This pendant is a scaled down version of the fleur de lis used in those sculptures and even shares the twisted petals which represents the rotational force of hurricanes and the current state of the region. Stainless steel Fleur de lis Pendant, 2" tall x 1.5" wide x 3/16" thick in a limited edition of 1,723. The number 1,723 was chosen because that was the death toll of Hurricane Katrina at the time the edition was created.

The fleur de lis has long been a symbol of French heritage of Louisiana and New Orleans and in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, this symbol has also come to represent the rebirth of the area. The fleur de lis has been in New Orleans through centuries of wars, disease, floods, and hurricanes and will continue to represent the ciy long after the rebuilding is complete. You now have a chance to own or give a unique piece of stainless steel jewely inspired by Hurricane Katrina that is produced in limited quantities. These pendants were designed and made by John Doherty, designer and worker of metal.

This stainless steel Fleur de lis Pendant, 3/16" thick is part of a limited edition of 80. This stylized fleur de lis incorporates elements of a hurricane symbol. These pieces require work by hammer and by hand and are produced in small quantities at a rate of approximately 10 per month until the edition is complete. Hurricane Katrina flooded approximately 80 percent of the City of New Orleans.

Hurricane Katrina's storm surge devastated much of John's hometown and this prompted him to create and sell several fleur de lis sculptures to help raise funds for storm victims through www.slidellhigh.org . The first fleur de lis sculpture, # 1/40 was made in September of 2005. This pendant is a progression of the fleur de lis used in those sculptures and even shares the twisted petals which represents the extreme rotational force of hurricanes as well as the current state of many communities in the region. This pendant is stainless steel and the hammered texture makes me think of the surface of the moon. The pendant is stainless steel and is about the thickness of a US Quarter.
The pendants are shaped to produce an undulating form.

This stainless steel shamrock pendant was designed and hand hammered by John Doherty in Colorado. The metal is about the thickness of a US Quarter. The pendant can be shipped with either a bright polished finish or an aged matte finish. Examples of both finishes are shown in the photos.

This limited edition steel wall hanging Twisted Fleur de Lis sculpture was inspired by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The piece is cut from 3/16" thick steel, is 17.5" tall x 16" wide and it is twisted to suggest the extreme rotational force of Hurricane Katrina. The colors are achieved using only heat, metal and rust. The date 8.29.05 is stamped on the front and the series number and signature is on the back. Brackets are welded to the back to allow hanging on a wall with a hook or a nail. The sculpture mounts 3/4" from the wall. A clear coating is applied to prevent rust when installed in interior environments.

Several finish options are available including a bare rusted patina which is shown in one of the photos and continue to weather in an exterior installation. Please inquire about finish options.

This piece from the Hurricane Katrina Collection was designed and made in Colorado by former Slidell, LA resident, John Doherty. It is made of steel and is 3/8" thick x 10" tall by 8.5" wide. The fleur de lis stands defiantly in the eye of a steel hurricane symbol base. The pieces are made to order and are part of a limited edition of 2005. All coloring is produced by heat, metal, rust or a combination of the three. A protective clear coat is applied once the coloring process is complete. The fleur de lis sculptures and pendants were made in response to the devastation Hurricane Katrina inflicted on the Gulf
Coast on August 29th 2005. Several similiar fleur de lis sculptures have been sold on Ebay.com in the months following
Hurricane Katrina's landfall and 100% of the profits were donated to the Slidell Alumni Hurricane Relief Fund which raised
funds for fellow classmates that sustained heavy losses from the storm.

The fleur de lis was chosen because it is the enduring symbol of New Orleans and Louisiana which has weathered hundreds
of years of floods, wars, disease, fires and hurricanes. With hard work and the continued generosity of the people of the United
States, this disaster will one day, hopefully be behind us and the fleur de lis will once again represent the "joie de vivre" side of
Louisiana. The fleur de lis pendants and sculptures are twisted to suggest the extreme rotational force of hurricanes.

Each piece has its' own individual characteristics due to the nature of working metal with heat and the weathered finishes.
The works of the Hurricane Katrina Collection were designed and crafted by John Doherty utilizing
metal working skills that were acquired the hard way in Slidell, LA working in a shipyard during summers as a college student.
The brass and stainless pieces have no coatings and the steel items are clear coated to prevent further rusting.

This limited edition steel wall hanging sculpture has a horizontal weld bead line to represent the high waterline of the flood waters of Hurricane Katrina. Some of these pieces are hanging in the homes of families that were flooded by the storm surge. The piece is cut from 3/16" thick steel, is 11" tall, is mildly distressed and the eye is defined using only heat and metal. The date 8.29.05 is stamped on the front and the series number and JD is marked on the back. Brackets are welded to the back to allow hanging on a wall with a hook or a nail. The sculpture mounts 3/4" from the wall. A clear coating is applied to prevent rust when installed in interior and exterior environments. It can be ordered in bare rusted steel for exterior applications as shown in one of the photos.
