STORY:
"Dolly" was inspired by a discussion in a feminism class that I'm taking. The phenomena of Barbie mutilation just fascinated me and I had to paint it. Many little girls will disfigure their Barbie dolls somehow in rebellion against her unattainable perfection, without consciously thinking about their reason for it, particularly little girls who are very far from looking similar to Barbie. My sister used to hang them and draw on their faces and pop their heads off, while I would brush their hair and make clothes for them and treasure them. It's interesting to note our different personality types now, with that in mind. This is the first in a series of "Bad Girls" paintings that will be available as prints.

TECHNICAL DETAILS:
The original was painted with watercolors in December of 2007. This listing is for a print, and the original painting is not for sale. The print size is 4" x 6" (10.16 cm x 15.24 cm), approximately, with a one inch space around the border for framing. This print is a giclee print, which is archival and museum-quality. You may note that it is priced higher than my other prints, and this is the reason - the paper and inks used in this particular print are of the highest quality, archival, and therefore more expensive. This is currently an open edition print.

STORY:
This painting was created using masking fluid. The fluid was applied, spelling out words in my nightly prayer. I'm not an overly religious person, certainly not a "pusher", but since I was young I've said this particular rambling compilation of prayers superstitiously before falling asleep. After I wrote the words out, I removed the masking fluid and worked on the painting from there.

The result is a spiritual and bright painting with lots of imbued meaning. Whether you choose your art to match your sofa or choose your art for its meaning, this is a beautiful and significant piece of artwork. The colors are lighter and brighter in person.

TECHNICAL DETAILS:
This is an original watercolor painting by Kate E. Austin, painted in 2006 on Arches 140 lb. bright white cold press watercolor paper with professional-grade watercolor paints. STORY:
"Dive" was inspired by a poem of the same name penned and performed by slam poet Andrea Gibson (www.andreagibson.com). It's also about resurfacing after a long time spent "underwater". It would be a wonderful gift to give yourself, or to somebody you know who needs to be reminded of their strength. The last lines of the poem are included in the piece - "So you tell your son or daughter there are sharks in the water, but the only way to survive is to breathe deep and dive."

TECHNICAL DETAILS:
The original was painted with acrylic paint on Yupo paper (which is a synthetic plastic paper) and then paint was "erased" using rubbing alcohol. This was painted in January of 2007 and has shown in Saratoga Springs and Glens Falls, New York. This is a print, and the original painting is not for sale. The print size is 11" x 17" (27.94 cm x 43.18 cm), approximately.

STORY:
You know the old saying, "Step on a crack, break your mother's back"? I try my best not to be superstitious, but I can't help but wonder "what if". And then I got to thinking about fault lines, and the fault lines in people, the cracks in people that I've stepped on and pushed on either intentionally or unintentionally. That's what this photograph is about. I had the idea for a while and was walking to an art opening in the rain when I saw the perfect crack for the photograph - and this photo was born!

STORY:
This piece of art is based on a sketchbook drawing - I had developed this character, the "pawn girl", over time, and to me, she's a symbol of independence and potential for greatness - even queendom! - despite people trying to control her, and her limited attack routes. I created this when I moved to a different town and ended a four-and-a-half-year unhealthy relationship, and the original sketch read "Being without you is a lot like being with you - It's lonely."

This is a shot of my two girls, Jones (the black one) and Chloe (the tabby). I've taken plenty of photographs of them both since their stray mother, Eleanor, brought them to my doorstep last September, but this one by my window just came out so perfectly that I had to share it. Jones and Chloe were both feral, and I tamed them over time. Now they sleep with me every night! This photo might remind you of your cats, or would be a wonderful gift for a cat lover!

This photograph was taken in July of 2007. I received a new camera as a birthday gift and decided to do a photoshoot. I dressed myself in an old crinoline and ragged shirt, paint on hands, and grabbed my favourite teacup as a prop. It's a self-portrait, but was meant to be just a beautiful photograph with a touch of Alice in Wonderland influence. The title is a line from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.

I painted this piece while I was living in Hudson Falls in isolation, compared to my day-to-day life these days. I always thought that in your twenties, you were supposed to have some kind of Great Adventure - my mother rode her motorcycle up to Vermont to her ski house every weekend, my father drove cross-country with his dog, broke down in Tennessee, lived there for a while, and hitchhiked back - so when I painted this, I was waiting for mine (or it was waiting for me), and very upset that it hadn't fallen in my lap yet. Do you feel the same way, that maybe there is something waiting for you? This piece hanging in your home would serve as a lovely reminder that maybe you ought to take steps to get out there and find it!

The writing here says "The thing I like about you is that you're like me." The two figures could be anyone, but in my life, it's me and my fiance Cory. We both like to lick the inside of the popcorn bag, for example. It's these kinds of disgusting things that we can share with each other, and that's a beautiful thing.

I created this by coating Yupo (a plastic paper) with acrylic ink, and laying plastic wrap and salt in it while it was wet. When it dried, I erased the white letters with rubbing alcohol. The inspiration for this one came from a time in my life where I really needed to "get on with things". I was looking forward to change, but lingering over what I was leaving behind for that change. "View from the Gazebo" was painted en plein air in City Park of downtown Glens Falls, inside the gazebo and facing toward the Queensbury Hotel. This was created as part of the 2006 Elements of Art Plein Air event and was displayed in the Elements of Art gallery in the Troy Shirt Factory in Glens Falls, New York. It's a wonderfully surreal landscape, dreamlike and very different from your usual park scene! If you love bright colours, this one's for you! The dark purple and magenta just leap off the page - I used up a lot of paint on this piece!

I often get very irritated with consumerism. I find the cognitive dissonance of our country and the gap between poverty and wealth just terribly upsetting. This collage features glamour models, starving children, President Bush, an article on homelessness, fashion patterns by Dolce & Gabbana and Burberry, Tony Blair... and cut-out letters spelling "Consume". It's a statement piece, you might say.
