CD, M.E. Smith and The Farm Noir Ensemble

This CD, entitled 'On My Way', was recorded in various living rooms across town over a two year period. It was released in 2004. It has been professionally pressed and will play in any machine. The CD comes in its own jewel case with printed liner notes. The case is wrapped in cellophane.

This is a collection of songs I wrote between 1998 and 2002 plus a few extras thrown in (Brownie McGee, Les Paul, Greig Martin). I was listening to a lot of Michelle Shocked and Mazzy star at the time. The music is both Alt Country and Roots -it's a bit bluegrassy, too. I was also playing washboard in a jug band at the time so there's definately a hillbilly influence (scared yet?) -washboard doesn't make an appearance.

The following is a review which appeared in Victoria's Monday Magazine (April 7-13, 2005):

"Time was I had nothing but disdain for anything that even smacked of country music. And while I'm hardly rushing to fill my CD player with the likes of Shania or Willie, I have to admit that there's been enough good stuff coming out of the barn recently that I've been forced to reconsider my musical prejudices. Case in point: 'On My Way'. While much of the success of this surprisingly jazzy but still undeniably grassy album comes courtesy of Meaghan Smith's quirky, charming vocals anyone with a discerning ear for music will enjoy the strong supporting work by the likes of Greig Martin, Dave Burke, Dan Weisenburger, James Hope, Reid Wilson and Cindy Smith. Yup, lots of folks involved, but their sonic plethora of lap steel, mandolin, banjo, rhythm guitar, harmonica, bass and drums never crowds or ever comes close to overpowering Smith's memorable voice. (Talk about talent-she also wrote seven of the disc's 10 tracks!) Besides, who couldn't love an album that features both yodelling and a swell cover of Brownie McGhee's "Living with the Blues"? File M.E. Smith and the Farm Noir Ensemble alongside Children of Celebrities and Barley Wik as yet another great recent local release. (Go Victoria!)" -John Threlfall
