This is a fine example of the folk art known as scherenschnitte, or "scissors cutting". The art originated in Germany and Switzerland, and early immigrants to the US, and is very unique to the Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch region. Many simpler patterns have emerged over the years (i.e. valentines), but this art was commonly used to decorate marriage and birth certificates, school award certificates, and love letters. The pattern is from a book of 18th and 19th century scherenschnitte patterns, and features two figures ice skating. the paper is an ivory colored parchment. It is matted and ready to go in an 8 x 10 frame. A plastic sleeve keeps it neat and clean, a history of the art of scherenschnitte is included!

Scherenschnitte, or "scissors cutting" was brought to the U.S. by early immigrants from Switzerland and Germany and is a unique craft which is common in Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch country. In the past is was an art which was used to decorate wedding and birth certificates, and was also an early form of today's valentine's. All of these designs are taken from original Pennsylvania Dutch designs.

This particular piece features two young girls during a gift exchange, and is adhered to ivory colored parchment, matted in an 8x10 black oval matte, and has a sturdy piece of cardboard behind it. It will fit easily in any 8x10 frame. A protective plastic cover will cover it, and each scherenschnitte bears my intitals and the date it was made.

I have many Christmas themed patterns to choose from, and they look lovely as a group!

This wonderful journal was cut from a very soft cranberry colored deer hide. Hand cut laces are worked around the outside edge, and when you unwrap the leather strap, you will find 100 pages of 24lb peach colored paper. Each page measures approximately 4 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches and has been hand bound with sinew. This journal feels so nice in your hands...it just seems to belong there! Makes a great gift for yourself or a special person in your life. Go ahead...treat yourself!
