Ruby is a Border Leicester/Lincoln cross. Her fleece is a grey mixed throughout with shades of black and brown.

It has been heavily skirted but does have VM throughout. Not much lanolin this fleece spins up beautifully as is, or overdyed for a rich blended color.
Average staple length is about 4 " ranging to 5 + .

Popular among the middle class in America from approximately 1750 - 1850 or a bit later, Venetian Carpet is an extrodinary floor covering to be sure.

Noted for its vivid colors and patterns it is a striped carpet with a close sett of woolen threads.
Traditionally the weft was often rags, but today can be anything the weaver wants to use.

Venetian Carpet was usually wall to wall in Early American homes but of course it can be what ever size is needed.

It was woven in 2 foot widths with the individual strips being joined together to form one large rug.

Here is just one example of the patterns available. This rug was woven from the draft ( pattern ) book of an 18th century weaver. The threads were hand dyed to match his specifications.

It came from Silas Burton who lived in Ct. in the 1700-1800s.
He has patterns for at least five Venetian Carpets.

Using 18th century weaving looms, I try to follow the traditional methods of handweaving both early American and early Scottish textiles.

Admittedly just beginning my journey through Scottish history, in particular Scottish weaving history I am fortunate to have good and knowledgeable people passing along what they know in an effort to see the skills kept alive for future generations.

My goal is to find and restore if need be, 18th & 19th century weaving/ spinning tools for use in weaving textiles from the same period.

So far I have four looms from this time period and a dozen or more spinning wheels as well as many of the accessories needed to use them.

For custom woven scarf of your clan tartan, I require three weeks for the weaving and a 50% deposit.
