yellow bunny surprise mug

$30.00
A wee white bunny sits patiently in the bottom of this yellow-and-white mug, waiting to be discovered. He'll be a delightful little surprise after finishing a cup of milk (hot cocoa? soup?). I started using similar cups at home to motivate my picky eater: “Okay, drink enough that you can see the bunny's head.” Every kid who uses one at my house is sure to ask for it next time; it was the first thing one of my 5-year-old's playdates said to me when I picked the girls up from kindergarten one morning: “Remember last time I came and you had cups with little animals?”

I made my first surprise mug for a dear friend 5 years ago. She remembered having something similar as a child, and loved the version I made for her enough that I made more. And more...

4 1/4" bowl diameter, 2 1/2" high. White porcelain fired to a sturdy cone 8, it is food, dishwasher, and microwave safe, though pottery always appreciates a little TLC, especially with wee animals in it :).

*note: this mug is a second, and is discounted $5 to reflect that. The inside front lip has a bulge, probably caused by an air bubble that was too small to be detected before firing, but expanded at the extreme temperatures. It's only visible in the right light, and can be passed off as part of the handmade, OOAK nature, but really isn't quite right. You can see it in the last photo, and just slightly in the full mug photo, if you look closely at the front lip.

periwinkle crochet mommy vase

$12.00
This 1 5/8" vase is perfect for a fistful of tiny blossoms, offered by a small beloved hand.

I made tiny vases to solve a problem in my own life: what to do with precious bouquets of lawn flora presented proudly by your darling? “Mommy, this is for you!” And must be displayed with equal pride! But a couple of stems of clover sunk miserably into even the smallest bud vases I had. I would try to float little blossoms in bowls, but I wasn't quite satisfied. So when I started to throw smaller pots, a wee “mommy vase” was a top priority. Lucky friends requested my extras for “choose something” birthday gifts, and now I'm sharing the love even farther!

Wheel-thrown porcelain clay, fired to cone 8 and glazed a lovely periwinkle blue. The crochet detail is a favorite of mine right now.

A perfect gift for your favorite mommy.

(or for yourself; wouldn't that little bunch of posies by _your_ computer monitor make your day?)

wee mouse leaf surprise cup

$30.00
A cheeky little gray mouse peeks up from the interior of this wee and lovely green leaf cup. The mug was wheel thrown, then altered to suggest a leaf (still retaining a functional sipping rim), with a good vine-y handle.

She waits to be discovered after finishing a cup of milk (hot cocoa? soup?). I started making similar cups to motivate my picky eater: “Okay, drink enough that you can see the bunny's head.” Every kid who uses one at my house is sure to ask for it next time; it was the first thing one of my 5-year-old's playdates said to me when I picked the girls up from kindergarten one morning: “Remember last time I came and you had cups with little animals?”. I hear they are also frequently used to hold rings by the sink or just plain look sweet. I made my first surprise mug for a dear friend 3 years ago. She remembered having something similar as a child, and loved the version I made for her enough that I made more. And more.

This mug boasts my very favorite glaze combination. It is first dipped in an antique bronze, with a clear overglaze inside to yield a good glossy transparent for the food surface and an eggshell overglaze on the exterior that gives it a marvelous satin finish with great variation of tone and fantastic little crystalline bursts. I'm pleased as punch with how this kiln-load turned out, particularly as I selected my son's baby bowls from the batch, and I wanted them to be worth treasuring.

White porcelain fired to cone 8. 2 1/2" bowl diameter, 1 1/2" high. The lead-free, food-safe glazes are also microwave & dishwasher safe, but pottery always likes to be treated with TLC to avoid chipping. Especially when it has little sculptures in it :).

Ice cream in tiny bowls with my now-34-year-old baby spoon. Tiny cookies on dainty plates.

(yet, if just still-in-the 9x13, even with a nice red dishtowel, 1/2 a pan of brownies can be breakfast <and> lunch)

I think a single cupcake would suffice on this 3 5/8" diameter cupcake stand, with pretty slip-dot detailing on the base.

White porcelain fired to cone 8; food-, dishwasher-, and microwave-safe glaze (though I can't really think why...maybe to heat a muffin?), but pottery always appreciates some TLC.

[Admittedly inspired by my first thesmallobject purchase, a "celebration candle kid" in hedgehog red that I adore]
