OOAK LOVE Cabochon Necklace

$22.00
This is a member of one of our newest creative initiatives. This cabochon (lapidary term for a rounded, flat-backed polished stone, often mounted in a jewelry finding) is an irregular, rounded trapezoid shape, about 2 1/2 x 1 inch in size (about 1/2 inch in thickness). Its main "ingredient" is polymer clay, the design inspired by Donna Kato's beautiful work/examples (in her recent "how-to" book on polymer clay art).

This piece is part of a growing collection of jewelry pieces with polymer clay as a base, and various materials/media/techniques added. This one is vividly tinted with gouache (red/blue/purple/ochre), with bits/strips of gold leaf (yes, REAL!), encased in transparent poly-clay. The abstract effect of the pigments/gold are reminiscent of a waterfall somewhere in the depths of the piece. At the lowest corner of the piece, the word "Love" is inscribed in italic calligraphy.

The cabochon is hand-buffed and given a protective acrylic-based coating (keeps the glassy polish alive!) mounted into a black matte-finish base, with a thin black border encircling the "stone." It has a loop-style pendant hanger built into the back, the entire structure composed of polymer clay (very strong and elegant as a result).

It hangs on a matte-finish, thin, tubular PVC "cord", permanently fastened by a practically invisible connector. The cord is soft and a little stretchy, so it goes on like a dream but retains its length (won't "sag"!).

Ireland Countryside Idyl 2

$10.00
This photo is another in a series captured in August, 2006, on a drive from Kinsale to Dingle, it is essentially the same view as its predecessor, but from a slightly different angle, and includes the sheep that happened to be lounging in the foreground. It portrays the stark contrast between farmland and mist-covered cliffs that can be found in that area of Ireland.

The photo will be printed with archival ink on premium glossy photo paper (unless otherwise specified for another type of paper--this is another that would be striking on watercolor paper, let me know!), 4 x 6 in. or 8 x 10 in. are available, with larger prints available at a negotiated price.

Faux Stone OOAK Double-Dove Cabochon

$20.00
This is a member of one of our newest creative initiatives. This cabochon (lapidary term for a rounded, flat-backed polished stone, often mounted in a jewelry finding) is oval in shape, not completely symmetrical, and about 2 x 1 1/2 inches in size (about 1/2 inch in thickness). Its main "ingredient" is polymer clay, the design inspired by Donna Kato's beautiful work/examples (in her recent "how-to" book on polymer clay art).

This piece is part of a growing collection of jewelry pieces using polymer clay as a base, with various materials/media/techniques added. This one is vividly tinted with gouache (red/blue/purple/ochre), interspersed with bits/strips of gold leaf (yes, REAL!), encased in transparent poly-clay, with a stamped design of Victorian-era scrollwork-drawn doves. A gray dove can be seen in the background, overlaid by a smaller silver dove of similar design, creating a "shadow" effect.

Doves are a longstanding symbol of peace--something we really need right now--and they are a recurrent theme in this series.

The cabochon is hand-buffed and given a protective coating (keeps the glassy polish alive!) mounted into a black matte-finish base, with a thin black border encircling the "stone." It would be stunning as either a pendant (on a black tubular stretch cord) or a pin--convo and specify which you'd rather it be transformed to!

Tobacco Fetal Effects Warning Pin

$15.00
The Surgeon General required warning from a cigarette pack, indicating the potential effects of smoking on the developing fetus and the risks of smoking during pregnancy.

Teal green label/white print, on deep purple background edged with gold, sprinkling of silver metallic stars to spark in the ambient light and draw attention to the piece. Finished in high-gloss, thick resin coating. Approximately 1 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches in diameter.

This is a strong activist piece, ideal for medical professionals who want to wear/display a high impact message, or for recovering smokers, or just those who want to support anti-smoking ideology (in other words, almost anyone!)!

More tobacco warning pieces to follow; this is the first of a series. If you want a similar item in alternate color combination(s), please convo me and we will figure it out!

They are sort of an expression of my super-macro-vision (lots of very tiny detail, a number of sections with different themes/textures, etc.)--when I described doing these things to someone as "insanity prevention" the person replied, "Doing something like that would probably MAKE me go insane!" (To each his/her own . . . )

The piece shown is a photographic print of the original pen & ink drawing; the original can be made available at a negotiated price (to be listed by agreement as a reserved order).
Hommage a Kandinsky Necklace

$40.00
Part of our growing collection of polymer clay art jewelry, this piece evolved from a random mosaic of tiny clippings of polymer clay. When it finally came out of the oven, I was immediately reminded of the Vasily Kandinsky print that has so long hung in my living room . . .

Following that inspiration, the base slab of polymer clay was enhanced with royal blue ink, providing greater definition and dimension to the various shapes and forms imbedded in the tiny sections of color in the slab. The clay slab is mounted in dark navy polymer clay that forms a thin border surrounding the entire piece. The design is heavily glazed with a high-gloss acrylic coating, giving it a glassy appearance; the matte surface of the surrounding border provides a striking contrast.

The necklace is formed from a thin strand of tubular stretch PVC cord, blue (with bits of glitter running through it) to harmonize with the outlining in the clay. the hanging cord is strung through tubular beads constructed of polymer clay, bonded to the back of the piece (see detail photo).

This is a striking jewelry piece, not for the wallflower, as it will get LOTS of attention! Its dimensions are about 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" (the height at the longest portion of the piece)--but it looks even larger because of its unique, bold design.

This jewelry piece is definitely one-of-a-kind; it can never be exactly duplicated, although I love the design so much, as it turned out, that I may use the concept for future pieces--and someday I may get around to creating more photo-art with the digital images . . .

The holly leaves are created with an impression of an actual live holly leaf in polymer clay; the leaves are finished with a custom-mixed metallic color glaze (very durable). Berries are ultra-high-gloss, we "picked" them from one of those decorative wreathes and transformed them into resin-filled embellishments (each tipped with a tiny spot of pearlescent green microspheres; please see photo). The stem of the berries is created from galvanized wire; berries are attached to the "stem" with a cocoonlike wrapping of many layers of silver-color satin thread, which is then glazed to bond it and make it very permanent (it will not snag on sharp objects, etc.).

While we may be create similar items in the future, because Nature is full of diversity there will never be another set just like this.
The color combination and the glow of the copper make this an unusual and warm-feeling piece.

The various sections are mounted in a "stacked" fashion across the surface of a support board, resulting in composite paper images that mimic sedimentary rock.

This series based on the above, in its individual pieces, contains a variety of embellishment items; the one described here being outlined/edged with gold embossing. Each piece also has elements achieved by texturizing of the component papers (wrinkling, corrugation, etc.), which adds subtle dimensionality.

The entire scarf itself in its entirety had a musical/operatic theme; the portion shown is but one of many sections of the entire work.

This is the first-listed of several of these prints--please watch for others as they appear! We are working progressively to transform the photos in this series (of several different painted silk scarves, not just this one) into prints and other items such as pins, pendants, etc. (Come back and look for future installations!)

This photographic print, as shown, is 9 x 10 inches. The images in different sections of the translucent silk fabric merged together to form a final image that was unique, only lasting as long as the fabric adhered to itself.

This image suggests the sail of a small boat, with a primitive, childlike quality to the design.

The photo is ~8 x 10 inches, printed on premium glossy photo paper with archival inks. Larger formats are available (please convo for price negotiation, we can create a reserved listing for you).

Orchid Show 2

This event is staged in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory building, a picturesque, glass-covered structure that in effect creates a cluster of greenhouses in which the exquisite displays are grown/shown.

We (along with thousands of fellow avid shutterbugs!) walked into this venue accompanied by three digital cameras (between 2 people!), and unexpectedly went into a photographer's trance. Came out with over 600 photos of some portion of these gorgeous, mysterious flowers. They are so unusual in their structure and appearance, one almost feels that they are more "animal" than plant! This is the first of many more we intend to share with you.

Photos in our shop are printed on premium glossy paper with archival inks (convo if you prefer another type of paper for a particular item and we can modify), the price is based on a 5 x 7 in. print; 8 x 10 prints are available as a reserved listing for a slightly higher price.
This one is truly to be considered "multimedia," as it included a gelatin mold with various color media imbedded, that was then photographed under a variety of lighting conditions.

People say that when they look at the images in this collection, they start to see all kinds of shapes, pictures, and potential meanings imbedded in them. I am absolutely "hooked" on doing them, and pushing the envelope to find new ways of creating these photo-abstractions.

This photo and its companions would look really stunning as a group (at about 4 x 6" or 5 x 7") or as solo pieces on their own--or pick your one favorite of these and order it a size or two larger than the others and have a mixed group in the "Shine" family!

All of the photographs in this store are printed on high-quality glossy photo paper (unless otherwise specified or special-ordered for matte or satin papers) with archival inks. We can provide you with photo sizes up to standard 8 1/2" x 11" for the prices quoted for each item; larger pieces are contracted by an appropriate vendor (we can do large paper and giclee prints) for negotiated prices.

$12.00
The Mary Griggs Burke Collection of Japanese Art was featured in a stunning exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2000. I was particularly struck by the seated figure of Fudo Myoo, carved from cypress (gold lacquered and inlaid with crystal, although with the age of the statue some of this has become less than obvious) during the Kamakura period (13th century).

This drawing is an elaborated (the background elements) version of the statue of Fudo Myoo shown in this exhibition, the choice of color made to emphasize the impressive age and continued vitality of the carving--and the deity it represents.

Fudo Myoo originated in India as a Hindu deity subsequently appropriated into the Buddhist tradition; described (in Bridge of Dreams (2000), the catalogue of the above Met exhibit) as "one of the many manifestations of Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction and reincarnation . . . "the unshakable or immovable one," . . . the indomitable and militant protector of Buddha's Law."

The Web-based graphics actually do not do the details of this drawing much justice; please contact for more accurate representation. The piece shown is a photographic print of the original pen & ink drawing. The original is available for purchase (price to be negotiated and listed as a reserved item).

The photo(s) shown here are the "before-and-after" versions; the original photo and our edit to remove the irrelevant man in the bright yellow coat!

We've removed fire hydrants from New Orleans street scenes, pesky utility wires stretched across the skies of landscapes, and even once removed the Disney Epcot "dome" from the distant background of an outdoor vacation portrait!

Please see other examples of our artistic photo editing, also listed here. (We can also turn many snapshots into art pieces!)

The price listed is an "average" estimate for something like "tourist removal". Depending on the details of what you want done with your photo, we can create a custom listing at a negotiated price--SO CONVO WITH QUESTIONS!

OOAK Faux Marble Slab Pendant

$20.00
This is a member of one of our newest creative initiatives. This piece is an irregular, 4-sided (semi-rectangular) shape, about 2 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch in size (about 1/4 inch in thickness). Its main "ingredient" is polymer clay, the design inspired by Donna Kato's beautiful work/examples (in her recent "how-to" book on polymer clay art).

This piece is part of a growing collection of jewelry pieces with polymer clay as a base, and various materials/media/techniques added. This one is vividly tinted with gouache and archival inks (red/aqua), against a yellow-pearl background, strewn with flakes of gold leaf (yes, REAL!). The appearance of the piece is much like a tiny slab of fantasy-colored marble.

The flat surface is hand-buffed and given a protective acrylic-based coating (keeps the glassy polish alive!) mounted into a charcoal-colored matte-finish base, with a thin black border encircling the "stone." It has a unique pendant hanger built into the back, with two tiny rings mounted on its top edge to keep its hanging cord in place (see photo). The entire structure is composed of polymer clay (very strong and elegant as a result).

It hangs on a matte-finish, thin, tubular PVC "cord", permanently fastened by a practically invisible connector. The cord is soft and a little stretchy, so it goes on like a dream but retains its length (won't "sag"!).

It is reminiscent of photographs made during moon landings, etc., in which the geographic features of the moon's surface are captured. In some ways, we consider this photo to symbolize the common elements that transcend place and space, as it is certifiably earthly but looks remarkably like the terrain on another planet.

This photo has been displayed as a small-format piece (4 x 6", 5 x 7") printed on glossy paper; we have not experimented with how it looks in a larger print--but that option is certainly available (up to 9 x 12").

That "event" was the . . . arrangement of a combination of waterbased pigments and paper, suspended in a liquid form, thus evolving/changing/dispersing until, basically, it didn't exist any longer. (This is a Zenlike experience, we can guarantee . . . )

The photo is what was captured in one moment of this process, unlike any other moment, sequenced between two other (equally interesting/beautiful) moments, and as such, irreplicable. It is "abstract" in the sense that the title is only one of many possible interpretations of its form, as well as in the sense that what one sees in the photo (the media employed) is rather far removed from what it comes to represent through its label.

Gregan's is a unique place; an old castle converted to a hotel, impeccably appointed and focused on grace and style. This still life was evidence of the thoughtful arrangement of decorative objects in their dining room. It was perfectly set against the backdrop of the beautifully lush garden and stark, unforgettable landscape of The Burren, the Irish archaeological wonder in which the castle is fortunate enough to have been built.

The photo will be printed with archival ink on premium glossy photo paper (unless otherwise specified for another type of paper--let me know!), 4 x 6 in. or 8 x 10 in. are available, with larger prints available at a negotiated price.

We have since discovered other variants of Morp who reveal themselves from time to time in various locations/forms (in keeping with my "art is everywhere" philosophy) . . . So watch for more/different Morps as we put them up here!

The original print of this photo is on 8 1/2" x 11" glossy photo paper; it would also look great in a larger format.

P.S. This necklace has a unique look, like ice crystals or a chain of clear rock candy! Accented with turquoise and silver glass beads randomly distributed around the length of the necklace, a fringe of 3 strands (1 1/2-2 inches) of matching turquoise and clear glass beads hang from the necklace.

One of the best things about this piece is that it picks up colors from whatever lies just behind it (be it fabric, skin, or even AIR), so it harmonizes with whatever you wear it with! The background colors are picked up and transmitted by the transparent material from which the tubular structure is constructed.

If you want other color schemes (besides turquoise/silver), convo us and we can plan a custom piece!

Most of the graphics are black/color pen-and-ink drawing, but this piece has a foiled metallic inset (please see photo). 6" x 9".

Many people have commented that parts of this piece look like microscopic views of the barbs on insect legs (sounds kinda weird but it's interesting . . . ). That, coupled with the color scheme/designs, gave rise to the title!

The glinting reflections of sunlight on suddenly-formed deep puddles was slightly broken into pieces by the barrier provided by the window screen.

This is a photographic encapsulation of a memory of a spring day with an outstanding rainstorm. It would look best in a larger format, e.g. 9 x 12", etc.

$25.00
Oh, so hard to describe how we got HERE!!!

This piece is the photographic record of a transient event. The most important part of the work is not the fact that it is a "photograph" so much as it is that the photograph was the only way to preserve what was happening with some watermedia (mostly acrylics) that were moving really fast through a dispersion process (I didn't do anything to deserve this, it just happened, or I allowed it to happen, on its own).

Anyway . . . (I have a hard time getting through this without getting off on a thought-tangent, remembering the experience of these floating colors drifting around in their container . . . oh, there it goes again . . . ) The end result was two things. The first was a few "choice" photographs of some of the moments of changing and merging colors (before they sort of turned to marbly-looking "mud"). The second (and much more precious to me personally) was the "birth" of a couple of characters in my family's life, called BioMorps (don't ask, if you don't really want to know!). You will see these--Mommy and Baby Biomorp, as well as more recently-discovered cousins, friends, and others--in other work displayed here.

This is an interesting and dynamic abstract piece, with the elements that (/who) revealed themselves to be Morps featured prominently as vibrant orange-red elements against a cooler "exploding" background.

The size at which this piece can be printed varies; it has been displayed as an 8 1/2" x 11" matted print, would probably look great as a larger piece, and if anyone wanted it smaller, that could be done, too (although I somehow think it might not have all its "punch" at 4 x 6 or so).

Many of the designs that decorate these "letter parts" are floral, much of it modelled after cloisonne-style enamelwork with gold lines defining lines and structures. 6" x 9".

The piece shown is a photographic print of the original pen & ink drawing; the original can be made available at a negotiated price (to be listed by agreement as a reserved order).

The inner surface of the folded/curled paper is encrusted with tiny glass beads over a splash of silver that echoes the tone of the surrounding fabric nest.

This piece looks amazingly fragile and delicate, but is constructed with reinforced materials and glazed so that it is much more durable than it looks (you can tap it with your finger and it won't yield or budge!).

In this case, some of the prints of this piece can be made with more vivid colors, and it is really stunning in more "saturated" blues, greens, and golds . . .

This is one of the pieces in a series of "abstract" photographic work that began about a year ago, using various physical setups and subjects to achieve images. This one like some of its companions, is really a "multimedia" piece, because it is a digital photograph of a very transient and temporary image that was created with liquid media. There is a subsequent "edition" of this piece currently in progress (although it has been "in progress" off and on for months!) that I will put up in the "sidebar" images--By "edition" what I mean is that enhancements/modifications of some of the features of the original photograph are being made, strictly by hand, with pencils/pastels, etc. This is not only a lot of fun, but it allows one to get effects that probably wouldn't happen otherwise.

People say that when they look at the images in this collection, they start to see all kinds of shapes, pictures, and potential meanings imbedded in them. The main listing began as a photo taken on a cell phone (very pixelated, not a happy-quality photo!)--It ended as a great gift for a family member.

Please see other examples of our photo editing, also listed here. (We can also remove unwanted details from photos, such as the "accidental tourist" in another of our listings!)

The price listed is an "average" estimate for work like the photos you see here. Depending on the details of what you want done with your photo, we can create a custom listing at a negotiated price--SO CONVO WITH QUESTIONS!

The photos can be transmitted electronically (we have really good virus/worm/nasty-ware detection software, which will be applied before any file is touched!), or can be shipped (at the customer's expense) on CD/DVD.

OOAK JOY Cabochon

$15.00
This is a member of one of our newest creative initiatives. This cabochon (lapidary term for a rounded, flat-backed polished stone, often mounted in a jewelry finding) is an almost-circular shape, about 2 inches in diameter (about 1/2 inch in thickness). Its main "ingredient" is polymer clay, the design inspired by Donna Kato's beautiful work/examples (in her recent "how-to" book on polymer clay art).

This piece is part of a growing collection of jewelry pieces with polymer clay as a base, and various materials/media/techniques added. This one is vividly tinted with gouache (gold/red/salmon/taupe), with bits of gold leaf (yes, REAL!), encased in transparent poly-clay. The effect of the pigments/gold is layered like agate. In the center of the piece, the word "Joy" is inscribed in bright red free-flowing cursive script; a small yellow floral design is stamped just below the inscription (barely visible but definitely THERE!).

The cabochon is hand-buffed and given a protective acrylic-based coating (keeps the glassy polish alive!), mounted into a gold metallic matte-finish polymer clay base, with a thin gold border encircling the "stone." It can be mounted as a pin or constructed as a pendant (the latter via a polymer clay hanging "loop" mounted on the back of the piece). Convo about your preference.
I was trying to be "clever" and shoot the photo by surprise, just as the door opened but . . . I was the one who got the BIG surprise when I saw the result of the shutter release!

This photo is interesting and lovely both in small (5 x 7 in.) and larger (8 x 10) formats--even larger is possible, for a negotiated price (convo and we'll figure it out and do a reserved listing). It will be printed on high-quality satin-finish photo paper (I think this is the best finish for this particular piece, but anyone who wants glossy, just specify) with archival ink.

This is one of those that used clear gelatin as a medium, colored with acrylic paints (but the rest of the method is our "trade secret," so anything else will just have to remain one of those little mysteries in "DIY Land"). In this piece, small details were added through digital image manipulation but the "gist" of the original remains.

People say that when they look at the images in this collection, they start to see all kinds of shapes, pictures, and potential meanings imbedded in them. We can provide you with photo sizes up to standard 8 1/2" x 11" for the prices quoted for each item; larger pieces are contracted by an appropriate vendor (we can do large paper and giclee prints) for negotiated prices. We were lucky enough to find it and capture it as a photograph, before it changed or became obliterated by time or human intervention.

Rather Jackson Pollock-esque, the only alterations made in the version currently shown are minor adjustments in the brightness level and enhancing the focus around the edges of the paint spots.

The photo is intended for medium (8 x 10") to larger format, and as always will be printed on premium-quality (glossy unless otherwise specified) photo paper with archival inks.

[We have created a hand-finished/enhanced (with paints) version of this print, donated to a charity raffle, and would certainly be willing to negotiate producing one for you (convo about prices, etc.). The hand enhancements primarily focus on overpainting with iridescent media, giving increased depth to the photo, as well as creating a condition in which the image changes with viewing angle and lighting conditions. The hand-enhanced print is finished with a substantial coat of polyester resin, deepening and enriching the colors as well as making the work more durable.]

We still wear that original pair (perhaps we will list them so duplicates are available for you to purchase also!) . . . Now we are returning to that basic design and creating a wealth of variations on it.

The earrings are fish-hook style earwires, this pair is in non-tarnishing silverplated wire. The design involves a central wire sculpted by carefully engineered bending/curling (so the little piece hangs straight on your ear!). Individual beaded wires are mounted so that they dangle and sparkle at the ends of the central piece. The effect is a little like the shape of a mimosa tree blossom.

These earrings are about 1 1/2 inches long (but they pack the style punch of something much BIGGER!)

The pair shown has a base of clear crystal/glass beads accented with pink, turquoise and violet--PERFECT FOR SPRING, WHICH IS PEEKING OUT FROM BEHIND THE CLOUDS NOW FOR MANY OF US!

Look for more beaded jewelry from us with similarly engineered designs (these are not as easy as they look, because everything has to BALANCE at the end!), in a variety of color/bead themes. If you like the design and want custom bead types/colors, please convo us and we can create a custom listing.

The focus is on the shape, glow, and blue/yellow/orange colors of the flame, partially obscured by the curve of a teakettle that sits over it. In the midst of the blue heat of it all, this is a very meditative piece. It would be equally well-displayed in large or small format; please convo about options.

[Note about photos from this shop:

All of our photographs are printed on high-quality glossy photo paper (unless otherwise specified or special-ordered for matte or satin papers) with archival inks. We can provide you with photo sizes up to standard 8 1/2" x 11" for the prices quoted for each item; larger pieces are contracted by an appropriate vendor (we can do large paper and giclee prints) for negotiated prices. Please inquire if you want a larger piece, and we'll work something out!]

$15.00
This creation is a paper jewelry piece that combines some of our jewelry concepts, the style of some of our more "geometric" drawings, and ideas/motifs derived from parts of our fabric designs (yet to be put up in the shop--look for them as they are COMING!). In other words, it is a "hybrid." It is actually an "altered image" as it was created on a base made from part of a catalogue photo of a pair of denim jeans (hence its name). If you look closely, you can still see the French seams and blue denim in its background!

The colors are predominantly blues and reds/pinks, from deep to pastel. This is a relatively large piece, about 2 1/2" x 3", and could be mounted as a striking pin or as a pendant (you choose and convo that to us), the latter with a simple silver pincer-type hanger on a jump ring, with black or clear cylindrical synthetic cord (inquire and we can put up or send you a photo).

The piece is coated with heavy resin glaze, giving it a glassy, ultra-high-gloss finish; embellishments of the pen-and-ink design include tiny laser-finished metallic stars, a pink Swarowski rhinestone mounted as a subtle detail, shimmering micro-glitter outlining/details, and a blue metallic heart finished with a relief that stands slightly above the surface of the glaze (harder to describe than to see!).

This photo has been only slightly edited to mute the brightness of the sun streaming in through the glass enclosure behind this great bloom.

Photos in our shop are printed on premium glossy paper with archival inks (convo if you prefer another type of paper for a particular item and we can modify), the price is based on a 5 x 7 in. print; 8 x 10 prints are available as a reserved listing for a slightly higher price.

This series, which looks remarkably like abstract paintings rather than photographs, was shot during a drenching rainstorm; the colors and patterns come from the changing and movements of lights--the traffic lights as they changed among their three choices, pedestrian crosswalk lights, and various car headlights as they splashed through the pouring rain.

People say that when they look at the images in this abstract collection, they start to see all kinds of shapes, pictures, and potential meanings imbedded in them. This is one of those that used clear gelatin as a medium, colored with acrylic paints (but the rest of the method is our "trade secret," so anything else will just have to remain one of those little mysteries in "DIY Land"). This particular composition used those media, mounted in a clear "compote" type dish (thus the glassy border). The surface texture of the "jelly" was achieved with digital image manipulation. There is another in this series that has the original surface of the "jelly," digitally embellished in a different manner (entirely).

The colors of these "jellycrylics" are not for the faint of heart, for sure . . .

People say that when they look at the images in this collection, they start to see all kinds of shapes, pictures, and potential meanings imbedded in them. In this series the medium was "shaped" and broken up in various ways with paper, oil, and various water-based colors.

We call this Dervishes because when we first viewed this piece in the series of photos it popped out as "dancers"; initially we were calling it "Fandango" until we took a "poll" of artist-types around our office, and the conclusion was that the spiritual practitioners (Dervishes) were definitely "there". Although our display items are (both) mirrors, we could also do picture frames, price in either case based on the size of the piece.

Here's the concept: 1) You collect up a bunch of items that are meaningful/attractive/symbolic/significant to you--either focused on a central theme (like a favorite activity, e.g., cooking, gardening, career, favorite color, sports, etc.) or to the extent that you choose, representing significant events in your life. The only restriction is that they be nonperishable and not too large to fit. 2) You send those items to me (we can arrange that), after some consultation/communication about the direction you want your piece to take. 3) I create an assemblage of the items you've sent, according to the specifications we've determined (size, whether it will be an empty frame or a mirror, color scheme likes/dislikes, etc.), filling in any "empty spaces" with materials in my (large) cabinet, such as foil confetti, glitter, beads, etc. 4) I ship it to you upon completion.

The creation of one of these unique items is quite time- and labor-intensive; in fact the activity itself is . . . just plain INTENSE (a lot of thought, care, planning, fussing, focus on the emotional/symbolic investment evoked by these things). They are not quick to create--in most cases about 6 weeks of "lead time" is required--primarily because the materials/techniques/volume of little pieces and the way they are applied have to be approached in "stages;" these things develop layers, some of which have to settle overnight before continuing.

If you like the idea for yourself or as a gift for someone you really love, contact me and we'll converse about it!

Again, the basis of this series is parallel "layers" of narrow strips of photographic prints, shuffled to obscure their original subjects and shift the focus to colors and abstract forms.

My Building Collage Pin

$15.00
Miniature (1 1/4 x 1 1/2 in.) multitextural collage, this piece evolved from the paper-based collage series I call "Papier Sedimentaire" (sedimentary papers)--please view the others as they are put up--but this one is "SPECIAL". The origin of it was the sort of end-piece of a combination of zig-zag-edged sections of some photographic prints, that I was in the process of setting up to cut into chunks and mount. The pieces were different lengths, yielding a little jagged scrap after the cutting that most people would just flick off into the recycling bin.

This thing illustrates the point of my "art is everywhere" philosophy, as when I looked at it, its structure and meaning started to emerge--and I just had to follow it to wherever it led. That turned out to be a tiny "urban landscape," much like scenes from pre-hi-rise New York City, with a foreground sidewalk (heavily embossed) reminiscent of a thick covering of snow (before it gets "yellowed" and/or soot-covered!) The details of the building and (primitive-style, for me) sun rays shining down were done with pen-and-ink(s), the piece also has a variety of finishes achieved with embossing powders.

Seeking the Mermaid Within

This one got its title through a group effort in which some colleagues and I did some brainstorming on "What IS this?!"--The final vote was for a guy with his face pressed up against the glass of an aquatic tank, gazing at a mermaid (looking within himself to find a mythical creature?).

I am absolutely "hooked" on doing these photographs, and pushing the envelope to find new ways of creating these photo-abstractions. I hope you enjoy them, too!

i-ching Hexagram 10 TREADING (Conduct) Pendant OOAK

$50.00
This is one of our polymer clay sculpted jewelry items, loosely inspired by the work of Donna Kato. It is a polymer clay slab, with gold leaf (yes, real!) imbedded, a pale mossy green color (created by a layer of gouache pigmentation). The design on the surface is Chinese calligraphy (hand-lettered), in black ink, representing the I-Ching hexagram number 10: Treading (Conduct). The piece is about 2 1/2 x 1 1/4 inches.

The interpretation of this hexagram is a person walking behind the tail of a tiger, but walking unendangered. This hexagram also connotes propriety, manners, and courtesy. The connotation of the hexagram is that despite risks, dangers, and challenges, gentleness, understanding, and a yielding, agreeable attitude will pave the way to a safe passage. (For more information, consult your favorite i-ching oracle.)

The necklace/pendant is framed by a charcoal-colored border/backing, also constructed of polymer clay. The central piece (with hexagram and Chinese characters in calligraphy) is finished with a high-gloss polymer coating, surrounded by a flat/matte charcoal border. It is hung from a tubular stretch cord (black) that harmonizes with the color of the framing border. It is mounted on the cord by way of two elongated (and very decorative) poly-clay beads that are bonded to the back of the piece--attractive and interesting both front and back (see photo for detail)!

This is a very unusual, one of a kind piece, and should be chosen carefully, based on one's need for the meaning of the hexagram in one's life, or on attraction to its meaning. (Other i-ching hexagram pieces are available, or we would be glad to execute a custom-ordered piece, if another of the hexagrams with special meaning for you is desired!)

This item is intended to represent an AFFIRMATION; a reminder or influence regarding one's life condition and the attitude needed to evoke a positive, successful outcome. It could also be used as a small wall-hanging for feng shui decoration. Don't take it lightly; it's a pretty piece of art, but you should choose carefully to suit your need for affirmation!

Please inquire about custom orders of these precious pieces; we would be honored to execute one for you that is exactly what is called for at the time.

Note that what is seen here on the web is a photo of the original drawing; the print looks very similar; the original drawing just "shines" more with the metallic inks . . . The original drawing is approximately 6 x 9 inches; in reproduction, custom sizes are possible (up to ~11 x 17).

It is another of these offerings that would be most versatile in terms of the type/style of the wearer, from classic/conservative to abstract-loving modernist.

Dimensions are roughly about 2 x 2 inches. This piece could also be dynamite as a pendant; please contact me to ask about this!

This one is unique in that it is a photograph I shot of a small area on the sidewalk in my neighborhood in New York City. There had been some kind of teenagers' party the previous evening, in a hall at the large church around the corner from us; while you may THINK what you see is a flower . . . look again (and again, and again)--it is actually a popped balloon, lying on a stray leaf on the concrete, arranged exactly however it fell (not "composed" or moved before the photograph).

I love this little photo as it is another prime example of my "art is everywhere" philosophy. The lighting was enthralling--before dark but after the light-sensitive security floodlights were activated--the background (the distance-misted view of Fordham Hill in the Bronx) whispered a suggestion of the urban context . . . (Can you tell it evokes a favored moment?!)

The version of this photo shown here has been "tweaked" in PhotoShop to enhance the color palette and tone down some of the harsher highlights from the floodlight's beam. Anyone interested in viewing the original, I would be glad to email a watermarked file for your viewing pleasure!

The size of this photo is slightly rectangular, almost square, 4 x 4 1/2 in., or any size up to about 8 x 9 in. (larger prints can be made available at a negotiated price). They are sort of an expression of my super-macro-vision (lots of very tiny detail, a number of sections with different themes/textures, etc.)--when I described doing these things to someone as "insanity prevention" the person replied, "Doing something like that would probably MAKE me go insane!" (To each his/her own . . . )

The piece shown is a photographic print of the original pen & ink drawing. The original is available for purchase (price to be negotiated and listed as a reserved item).

It has geometric elements, as well as a couple of metallic sketches of Hershey's kiss candies scattered around.

The piece shown is a photographic print of the original pen & ink drawing. The original is not for sale.

Embedded in the surface of the pool are a complex swath of shimmering accents formed from beads and iridescent color and glitter. Mounted on a shimmering sculpted swatch of fabric woven with rainbow lame'. This is truly a unique piece, not for the faint of heart or anyone who doesn't cultivate "edge".

Approximately 1 1/4 x 2 1/2 inches.
